Im sorry. I dont remember the make of the car. All I was told about the time of the photo is, fall of 1940, and maybe even 41. The picture was taken when the deer was brought back to Holbrook. Lance

Doug With how dry its been I cant think of when I have hunted in so much snow during a season! The spring buffalo/turkey, General deer on the Bab, Late rifle bull and now the late cow hunt. It seems its been snowing every couple weeks! There were plenty of cow elk still up high all over above the rim. As the pictures above show, if you were willing to trudge through the deep snow to get to them, you could gather them up with a butterfly net! But the snow was just to deap to get to most of them. Hiking a mile in the deep snow is tough enough, and then to pack one out After a deep snow packout, we headed down below the rim for the 6A hunt and had our pick at what ones were closest to the road for the easest pack out Plenty of elk had migrated down. I wanted to make a separate post for the awesome youth that we have been blessed to have been with in the field on their hunts so far this year! Truly our future is in good hands with these incredible youth! Nothing beats a first kill or the smile of a youth hunter knowing they got the job done. That twinkle in their eye! The excitement welled up in their soul ready to burst! The genuine smile on their face that lasts for weeks and even years! That contagious smile that seems to encompass and flow through their entire body! The loving feeling you are overcome with when they look you in the eye and say "Thank You". Well, no kids, Thank You! Thank you! Here's to the Youth, you are our Rock! You make us all we can be and I am proud to say that you are our future! Here's to you! There are so many awesome youth on this site or that belong to the families on this site! Thank you all for sharing their wonderful stories! These are some of the kids that we were able to be a part of so far this year! I hope I was able to capture some of the moments and smiles in photos for you! Enjoy! First was 17 year old "TLO associate Amy" Who was hunting with her father and sister when she took this beautiful big AZ archery mule deer buck! This is Amy's first deer and she did it with her bow! Her dad, TLO guide Ryan, did a drive and pushed the deer right by her! Congrats Amy you Rock! Next is Sam. You may recognize him from the other thread. Sam took this nice bull during his "Limited Opportunity" elk hunt in Northern AZ. Sam was hunting with his Grandfather and this was Sam's First Big Game Hunt! I called this bull in just before dark on the first day! Way to get it done Sam, congrats on a great hunt! Next was a couple of my nieces Layna age 14 and her little sister Lexi age 11. They were on the same "Limited Opportunity" AZ elk hunt as Sam. The elk tag they had was for "Any Elk" and they passed on several cows and small bulls while we chased some big ones around! We had a great hunt and it came time to fill their tags so the next bull Layna got a shot at was this Spike and she made it happen with a 60 yard shot to take her very first elk that her dad had pushed out of a thicket! Congrats Layna! Along with her sister, Dad and myself, her Grandfather (my Dad) her uncle Blair and uncle Mel were there for the hunting fun! We have a tradition that when you make your first big game kill of any species that we wipe blood on your face! Layna has killed two deer and two javelina and was proud to take some big hand fulls of bull elk blood across her cheeks! Next was 11 year old Lexi! Lexi had hit a big 6x6 bull earlier on this hunt but it ended up not being a lethal hit and the bull got away. She was sad but not deterred and got back in the game with a strong and lethal determination! This nice bull was located and called in and she put him down with one shot just over 100 yards to take her Very First Big Game Animal! Congrats Lexi, your smile says it all! These girls were a big help in cutting up their elk and did not shirk to any task! And they truly are good with a knife and can skin faster than many adult men! I was very impressed and proud of my nieces! Next was Karen and her Muzzleloader cow hunt on the Depot! 14 year old Caren is the above Amy's sister. This is Karen's second cow elk off of the Depot while hunting with her dad! She took her cow first thing opening morning! Next came a Northern AZ Junior deer hunt! My 13 year old son Ty and 13 year old Nephew Josh both drew the tag on separate apps as did their good friend 14 year old Zack. This is a pretty good tag, and these boys can shoot so the first day I took them looking for some big bucks! We only found one nice 3X that Ty tried to get Josh a shot on but he got away. Ty has shot several big game animals and Josh was looking for his first so that is why Ty was trying to get Josh the shot. We didn't find our big bucks that day and I am not one to stand in the way of a kid getting their first big game animal because I want to trophy hunt. So the next day I took them to what we call the "Nursery" to have some fun! This is the area where loads of does and small bucks hang out! We did a little hike and then drove from glassing spot to glassing spot looking over tons of deer! While driving between spots we spotted a group of 4 small bucks. I pulled off the road and said get em boys! There were plenty of bucks to go around this time so Ty waisted no time in grabbing my 7MM RUM and made a perfect off hand shot at 100 yards to drop the first buck that would hold still! the bucks stopped to look at their fallen buddy and Josh took a shot but missed. We hiked over the hill after the bucks and found them 300 yards away. I sat out the tripod for a standing shot and told him to aim at the top of the back, Josh leaned rested over the tripod and dropped the buck to take his first big game animal! Congrats boys, you are lethal in deed! They gutted their own deer, drug them back to the truck and even loaded them by their selves! Zack was not able to go with us on Saturday but I got the crew together Monday morning and we headed back to the Nursery! I took My nephew Zeb and my two head guides, my son's, 11 year old Weston and Ty.We joined Zack and his Dad and all headed out together. I let Weston and Ty go to work and they spotted most of the deer and were awesome when it came to helping Zack! Weston found the buck that we took. I was very proud of the job my boys did. We saw loads of deer and had found 3 separate bucks before sunup. The third buck stood in the wrong spot and Zack dropped him at a little over 100 yards to take his first big game animal! Congrats Zack and way to get it done! Glad we could all be there with you guys! This is my Family! All of us hunt and fish and enjoy the outdoors all we can, and together as much as we can! Thanks to our Heavenly Father for giving us all the wonderful outdoors to bring families together in a bond that lasts! We have another dozen or so youth hunts to partake in this season so hopefully I can capture some more of these precious moments on camera to share! Lance and Carrie Crowther and Family MORE YOUTH PICTURES ADDED AT THE END! Updated Dec 11th 2009!

UPDATED DEC 11TH ! OK, the blessings continue to pour in! Our family and TLO crew have been blessed to have gone hunting with many more youth hunters since I first posted this topic! This is realy where its at and truly makes it all worth while! A Big THANK YOU to all involved! THESE KIDS ROCK! First we had my 11 year old son Weston! This is Weston's first deer and I got to be right there by his side every second of the way! This was a southern AZ General November hunt that we picked up as a left over tag! Congrats on a beautifull Coues buck Son! Next We have Marco! This is 14 year old Marco with his first bull elk! He took this bull on the AZ 6A Nov Muzzleloader hunt. Marco wasn't about to pass up any bull and he let this bull have it with his smokepole across a canyon on the first evening of his hunt! His proud Father was right there with him! Next we have Amy again! 17 year old Amy is the one with the big archery buck at the first of this post! Amy drew a tag with her sister Becky and they were able to go to CO with their dad, TLO guide Ryan. This was Amy's second deer and a nice one at that! Congrats on a great hunt Amy! Next We have 17 year old Becky (Sister of above Amy) with her first deer! She took this big buck on the same hunt with her sister and Dad! What an awesome deer Becky! Way to hold out and get spoiled with your first one! These girls can hunt! Next we have 13 year old Kaylee! Kaylee drew a 12B late tag and got to hunt with her Dad, TLO guide Russ and many more of the TLO crew! Kaylee passed on many, many great bucks during her short time in Northern AZ! She took this great buck on the evening of the second day of her hunt! Congrats on a great buck Kaylee, everyone had a great time! Next we have 12 year old Robert Jr! This is Robert's first deer! Robert had a Southern AZ November Jr deer hunt. I beleive this was our hardest hunt all year when it came to finding the bucks we were looking for. Robert hunted with his 16 year old brother Cole and was accompanied by both his parrents Bob and Heidi and TLO guide Jake! The smile says it all! Congrats Robert and way to get it done! Next we have the famous hunting twins Becky and Amy again! Right On! These Girls Rock and totally cleaned house this year! These Girls have also helped out and put in lots of hard hours over the years with a dozen other TLO hunts, including donating time to some of our "Hunt of a Lifetime hunts" Way to get it done Girls! And way to set an exsample by giving back! First we have Becky! She took her first bull on opening day of the late rifle bull hunt in Northern AZ! She hunted with her sister and many many TLO Family members that came in handy with a long and late night packout! Becky took this bull down at over 400 yards and also took off one of his antelers with one of her shots! Guess she'll take em down one peice at a time if she has to! lol! Congrats on a good bull and way to get it done! And then on the second day of the same hunt Amy took her first bull! Amy was hunting with the same great team and also had a huge late night packout! Amy took her nice bull in his bed at 529 yards! Congrats again Amy! These Girls are Dangerous! Next we have 13 year old Joey! On the third day of the Late rifle hunt in another unit he took this fine bull as his first elk! He was joined by his father Jason and TLO guide Jon. It was a fine morning with a little snow to top it all off! Congrats on your first elk and we cant wait to do it again! Next we have 10 year old Braelyn! This is Braelyn's first deer and a fine Coues deer at that! She was able to hunt with her brothers, Dad PJ and TLO guide Uncle Jake! Her older brothers better look out! I beleive her first buck is bigger than their first bucks! haha! Congrats and way to get it done girl! Next we have her older brother Shawn! Shawn has taken several deer and held out for a big one and then on the last day he took this nice young Coues buck! This was a late November Southern AZ coues hunt. He got to hunt with his Sister, Brother, Dad and Uncle! Congrats on another sucessful deer hunt Shawn! Next we have 16 year old Linn with her first big game animal on her first big game hunt! Linn drew her Northern AZ late season cow tag on her first time applying! On the second day of her hunt, Linn dropped this cow with a perfect shot off my tripod on the run at just under 200 yards. Girls can just naturaly shoot I tell you what! Several family members including her Dad, Brother and TLO guide Uncle Ryan were able to be a part of her hunt! Way to go Linn and congrats again! Next we have her brother 13 year old Roger! He had the same hunt as his sister but this was his Third time applying so he was a little envious of his sister getting her elk first! But he took his first elk the next morning durning the start of the big snow storm that stranded so many hunters. They got the job done and got out! Doesn't it look cold! The wind was nasty but Roger is the man and got it done anyway! Congrats Roger! Well, thats the update for this years youth. I hope you enjoyed it. I cant hardly beleive it and cant begin to count the blessings! What a great bunch of hunting youth and young adults! And what a great bunch of animals! I expect to see more great hunts from these guys and gals in the future! We are so thankfull that we could be a part of so many awesome youth hunts this year! There is just not enough time and space for me to tell every individual story the way it deserves to be told, so I will let the hunters tell it. Once again, a BIG THANKS to everyone involved and we cant wait to do it all again! Family is Everything! Lance

"Dang Lance..........great butchering lessons and pics. But..............has the quad in the first pic been driven off-road? Shame on you............" As a matter of fact, there were many quads there! It was an area that is legal to drive off road to retrieve your game animal, but indeed the bull fell in the middle of a road anyway! Didn't you read the story's? Fallow the links below for a good read and loads of pictures! http://forums.coueswhitetail.com/forums/in...&hl=buffalo http://forums.coueswhitetail.com/forums/in...&hl=buffalo Lance

This is a TLO Archery buffalo we took this August! Depending on shot placement of bullet or arrow, some trimming of the rib roll may be needed. Lay out a fine slab of rib roll and rub in a nice dry rub! Roll it back up and tie it like a roast and Smoke it just like a beef briskit! oh my! The flank meat on a large animal like an elk or buffalo can be worth its weight if the time is taken to prepare it properly just like on a beef. If an animal is already gutted it can easaly come off with the rib roll. But if the guttless meathod is being used then you can carfully take this off as the very last thing you do, as it will let the gut sag out and will be in the way of doing any more work. But if the flank meat is aloud to dry too much in the field or where ever, as it often does on one side. Then it is usually too thin to salvage meat from the other side. So keep it wraped up, clean and dont let it dry out. Lance

Just wanted to add a couple more pictures to the mix. On a bull buffalo it is truly a fine slab of prime meat! Lance

To the request of several friends here on the site I am posting the bulls that we have been blessed to be a part of so far this season. We have been busy and havent been around the PC much for the past several months so I am sorry these are comming a little late. The rut was as most already know, somewhat uneventfull. Still, we got shots at a couple of our biggest bulls. But they got away with dead end blood trails, leaving us scratching our humble heads, but we were able to take some great bulls just the same. We hunted with a great bunch of guys and made memories and friendships to last a lifetime! Priceless! I hope you enjoy the pictures of these beautifull animals! There just isn't room enough to relay all the wonderfull stories of each day in the field scouting and hunting these amazing elk with amazing friends! First Matt took his awesome nontypical bull while hunting with Jake. Then Howard took the bull we called "Slick"! His nephew Ross hit a twig and missed this bull a couple of days before while hunting with me. Then a couple of days later Howard had his chance at him and made it happen while hunting with Jon and I. Then Ross and I were able to take this bull a few days later I want to add that befor Ross took his bull he was able to arrow this beautifull bobcat that I called in! Awesome shootin Ross! After that came Carmel and his bull! A late night and long pack out for a great bull and a great guy! Then came Norden and the 6x7 he took with Jon and I. Congrats and way to get it done Jon and Norden! You earned it! After that it was off to no mans land for a hunt with Chuck and Sam! Chuck is Sam's Grandfather. Chuck lives in NY and Sam lives in TX. Chuck has made a grand effort to make sure his grandson is introduced to the outdoors! They drew a "Limited Opportunity Hunt" for elk here in AZ, and this hunt was to be 13 year old Sam's first big game hunt! The first one to draw blood was Sam with a nice 5X! Congrats Sam on your first big game animal! Then his Grand dad Chuck was able to take this beautiful bull on their Limited Opp hunt! Congrats to both of you! Then the most recent! Jon and Larry headed to Colorado where Larry took this awesome Colorado public land 6x6 bull! Congrats on an awesome public land Colorado bull Larry! And of course every sunrise and every sunset to every beautifull day in the field was absolutly priceless! Thank you everyone! There were a few more elk in there and I will share them on another thred dealing with the "Awesome Youth Hunters" we are so blessed with! And look out for a mule deer recap post as well! Thanks Lance and Carrie Crowther
