This season started like all the others, scouting, scouting and scouting! We knew where we wanted to be so watching snow conditions and access was realy the plan. At first there was loads of fun deeeeep snow! Don't it look like fun? This type of thing is pritty tiring but Russ still has a Big smile. I think we are a little sick that way, But arn't we all? Access was tough but fun, in a sick and twisted sort of way! Finaly close to where we wanted to be, we found tracks! But were they the tracks we were looking for? Conditions were just not right that week so we headed in. More scouting was planed and we kept an eye on the weather changes. To be continued.... Lance

UPDATED PIC'S

This is a picture of my late Grandfather. Clifford F Crowther Sr. My Dads Father. From Holbrook AZ. It was taken about 1940! This picture sits im my office. I took this picture to to my Grandmother Rhoana Crowther, now age 93, and asked her what she could tell me about it. Se said that he took the buck on a hunt near Chevlon. Now unit 4. He used to work at the Ranger Station there. She told me some about that. She then began to talk about the car. And that is the story I want to share with you! She said that was the car they moved from New Mexico in. And then she got a little sadness in her voice and began to tell me about the trip, and how my dad, (Tom Crowther) then 3 years old, was in the back seat playing with his older brother Frank, when he kicked frank right out of the car! My grandmother got a little tear in her eye and said, "The back door came open and Frank flew out down the highway at 55 miles per hour!" Then, a sweet little "my poor child quiver" came into her voice as she described him rolling down the pavement. " His little cowboy boots came off and one went this way and one went way down the road that way". "Oh my poor child". Then the quiver left her voice, she wiped the little tear from her cheak and described how there was nothing wrong with him. "A few small scrapes and bruises but nothing serious! Their Father In Heaven was watching over them!" Then she turned to me with a little smirk and said "Go ask your Father why he did that." ( She didn't really blame my father, but it was funny) When I presented it to my Father he said " He ticked me of, so I booted him out the door!" Haha he laughed and then said that he was only three years old at the time and really didn't remember. My uncle Frank made some comments about his naughty little brother but I don't think he really remembered either. Seat belts were never thought much about in the 40's were they! I asked about a deer photo and got a great family history story I would have never known about. Family is everything! Take the time to talk with your elders before they are gone! You will be amazed of the stories you will hear! And as they say, "It's worth is priceless" Lance

In talking about AZ buffalo I believe there needs to be mention of how in resent years, some people with the Grand Canyon park service are arguing that these historical buffalo don't belong. And have been taking steps to press that issue. But on the other hand, some also like them because it is a major tourist attraction. So they are having a delima there. Some argue that the buffalo are eroding the park. Besides the fact that I guess we would hate to erode the largest erosion hole in the world. There is much more evidence of forest mismanagement and the millions of visitors each year doing more damage to the park than the cloven hoof buffalo. Some are arguing the excuse that Arizona is not traditional buffalo range to push the extermination of this historical House Rock herd. And I guess that would be OK if you were to ignore all the facts. "The Earliest written record of bison in Arizona is the sighting of a small herd in Northern Arizona by a Spanish Conquistador in the 1500's, with archaeological evidence from the 1200's. Native Americans left pictographs of bison in Kanab creek just north of the Arizona-Utah border and at 18 other locations in Utah. The sighting by conquistadors and the pictographs suggest bison have occurred at least occasionally in northern Arizona" I guess maybe it comes down to how far back you want to look? I'm sure there were no Buffalo around here with the dinosaurs, if one wants to call that traditionally. They also argue that they are not "Pure Buffalo" and that they have small traces of cattle in them from "Buffalo Jones" experiment, and that we should get rid of them because of that. If that is the case some people might suggest that we start by culling the non genetically pure wolves first. Studies and records show that only about 10% of the bison in the world are genetically "pure". And recent studies also show that there WERE buffalo found in Arizona with "Pure" Buffalo genetics. Reality is that AZ buffalo, as one of only 3 free ranging herds in the world, are here to stay and deserve to stay. The true dilemma is not "How do we get rid of these buffalo" it lies in "how to keep the buffalo numbers managed" and keep them from over populating. These buffalo are very smart and know exactly where the Park line is at. In the end the answer lies in the Park Service realizing a way to let more of these buffalo be managed by the Game and Fish. Meaning to be managed by the public. Besides, If they got rid of all the buffalo, they would have to change their National Park symble. lol!

Ha, yea well I need to write our 2010 buffalo stories first! lol! That antelope hunt was 8 years ago and I'm still payng for it! lol! Lance

I've never had a rifle tag. Maybe cause I don't put in for rifle? lol! I've had a couple of archery tags. This is my first personal buck. An Amazing hunt with life long memories! I missed the big one after getting dirt in my release during the belly crawl. It had a serious hang fire and I missed by 20+ ft! lol! I shot this old buck later in the hunt and it was an awesome experience that I will never forget! Lance

Schultz Fire time laps video. The Sanfransisco Peaks on fire. Our beautiful mountain, I have been waiting a long time knowing this was going to happen some day, but it doesnt make it any easier to see.........
-
Ive been out looking at the burned areas and much of it will recover fast and much will be good hunting in a few short years and there is plenty of good that will come of it. But there are some areas the distruction will continue long after the fire is out as the soil washes away to rock. Im sure the watershed road and the pipeline will suffer loads of destruction for quite some time in the schultz peak area. I heard tell of the mudslides that came off of Mt Elden back when and Mt elden is small compared to how high the Peaks burned! So it will be interesting to see what comes next. Yes fire is a good cleansing for the forest but its not good when it kills the earth the way it has in some of those steep areas! Time will tell.
-
A friend of mine took some amazing pictures of the fire and I wanted to share them with you! She did a good job didnt she! She lives near me and this is what the fire looked like from the hill by our house. I know fires can bring some good changes and good hunting. But right now it is a sad sight and even sader knowing what the monsoons are going to do to those steep slopes. Lance

Oh you all are so missing out! The weather and the fire is perfect! And Amanda said she wishes you all were here! The elk burgers and the smoked hot wings were great and the cheese cake and smores are too! -
We were once again very blessed to be able to hunt the Kaibab on the early rifle hunt with some very wonderful friends and family! We had a great team going and every one did their best to do their part when it came time for it. Ernie, Mark and Phillip were the ones in our camp lucky enough to draw the tags. Ernie from Phoenix would hunt with Jon, Mark from Texas would hunt with me and Phillip from Tucson would hunt with his son, TLO guide Jake. The weather had moved in before the hunt and laid down some -0 temps and a few inches of snow! Opening morning came and we all had our plans and took our positions. When the sun came up it was the start of a beautiful day! We found several great bucks between all of us including the "Drop Tine" buck we had hunted on the archery hunt! We jumped this buck several times, circling him and intercepting him 4 times without getting a shot. About this time Jon called on the radio and let us know they had connected on a big buck! Jake and Phillip went to help them and Mark and I continued on the trail of the Drop Tine buck! We once again determined where he was going to go and circled away from his back trail to take a peak in the area. We found the buck bedded and watching his back trail like we figured. Mark made a great shot just over 100 yards to take him in his bed! He is a buck that has everything, high wide and heavy with kicker, sticker and drop tine! It was a fine two buck day and we were all counting our blessings with these two beautiful bucks we were able to be a part of! This is Ernie with his awesome buck! This is Mark with his awesome "Drop Tine" buck! The next day was Phillips turn! He only had a couple of days to hunt so it was time to make it happen. We split up and glassed from a couple different angles where we knew some shooter bucks were at. Jon was the first to spot one of the big ones and we got Phillip and Jake over there and into position. When it was all said and done a beautiful 185" class buck slipped away with a couple of hairs missing off the bottom of his chest. It was a close call that left all of us excited and ready to try to find him again or find another! We had just spread out and moved into a canyon with high hopes when Phillips gun rang out and startled us all! He had taken a beautiful 4x5! This is Phillip with his great 4x5 buck! This is the happy crew. For those of you wondering about score, here is a reference for you, the buck in the middle scores 165" That afternoon TLO guide Ben showed up in our camp to see how things were going. Ben's new bride Kaylee and her family and friends had several tags amongst themselves in another camp. Ben and Kaylee had been on several great bucks but hadn't gotten a bullet in one of them. They were hunting another unit in the Bab and bucks were getting a lot of pressure. Ben said they both had to get back to work and asked if I had any After Opening Day buck hideouts that they hadn't tried yet. Since they had to leave she had lowered her sights and was just looking to fill her tag with a 3pt or better. As I began to show him some spots on the map I had a better idea and said since we were done in our camp why don't I just go with you! So Ben, Kaylee and I headed out for the evening hunt to check some honey holes. After passing several little bucks we found a group of bigger bucks sneaking from one hidey hole to another. We tracked them down and found them in their beds and after a little sneak and peek stalk action Kaylee took the bigger of the 4 bucks in his bed at about 200 yards for another wonderful two buck day! This is Kaylee and Ben with Kaylee's buck! What a blessing to be a part of such wonderful animals with wonderful people! Thank you everyone, it was great to be a part of another awesome Kaibab hunt!
