Hi All, I was going through a bunch of my hunting gear and found some older bottles of Scent Killer. There is a date stamped on the bottom of the bottle but I don't know if that is an expiration date or not. Anyone have any suggestions? I would hate to throw it away cause its a little pricey, but I also don't want to be using something that may not be the best to use. jeff

1st Annual All-Ladies Turkey hunt!
huntswnm replied to CouesWhitetail's topic in Small Game, Upland Bird, and Waterfowl Hunting
Amanda, Man I don't know how I missed this post till now, I had really been looking forward to reading it!! Sounds like you guys had a great time, I am very glad things went well for you!! That is some beautiful country up there, and obviously quite a few birds. Congratulations!! Jeff -
I have never personally done any taxi work on a turkey but I would think it would be best to let the taxidermist do the skinning himself if at all possible. The skin is so thin that it is easy to tear, etc. Amanda, That is a great looking turkey....Looks like you guys had some luck! Have you written up a story on your hunt yet?? Jeff

J- Good job man. I have seen Coues around here still packing both sides up into the first part of turkey season, mid to late April. Give it a week or so and I bet you have more luck.......... Jeff

I don't have any first hand knowledge of the trip, but heres what I can give you....... The only thing I can recomend is a book called Gila Descending. The author is Dutch Salmon, one of the Game and Fish Commisioners that lives here in Silver City. The book is about is journey from the Headwaters around Mogollon Baldy all the way down towards the town of Cliff where he then rafts into AZ. One other suggestion is that I have seen a two different books that describe in detail most all of the trails in the Gila Wilderness and the Aldo Leopold Wilderness. You would obviously need the one for the Gila. I know that the local bike shop, Gila Hike and Bike, carries them for about $17 dollars a piece. If you want the names of them I can stop by tomorrow and get them for you. I have looked through them and they look like they would be very helpful for someone who is exploring the trails for the first time. Let me know if I can help some more. Jeff

Ok, so I am hunting javelinas for the first time this year here in NM. I have been able to get into some, just not close enough for a shot with my bow. The next day I am able to go out the weather is calling for possibility of snow with a high aroun 38. It should be a little warmer at the lower elevation where I am planning on going........but I am not sure if the trip will be worth it with weather like that. What is your opinion about hunting Javelinas in this kind of weather? Any tips? jeff

Man when you said you stored it indoors you weren't kidding jeff

Mexico Goulds Hunt Whos Going !!!!!
huntswnm replied to wardsoutfitters's topic in Bowhunting for Coues Deer
I am with Jamaro on this one......REALLY interested......but don't think I can pull it off this year. Any chance this will be available in 2010 as well? Thanks jeff -
I have the ProHunter and have liked it so far. I have only shot it with a .243 barrel and recently aqcuired a 12 ga turkey barrel that I am looking forward to patterning before turkey season. Some folks say that the adjustable hammer and the Flex stock system are not worth the added expense as when compared to the T/C Encore, but to each his own I suppose. They are very pricey that is for sure. jeff

I have never personally used them, but know guys who do. I have only ever seen them used with traditional equipment, i.e. recurves and long bows. Mostly seen them used when trying to hunt birds or anytime you don't want the arrow to travel very far. Usually about 20 yards they hold there normal speed then take a nose dive. jeff

I hunted an area this year where no matter what the wind was doing here in town you could not gaurantee it was blowing the same direction up there. My drive to my stand took the better part of an hour. So, I placed a stand on the east side of the trail I was hunting (wind primarily out of the W/SW) and an Ameristep ground blind on the West side of the trail for the days the wind was coming out of the East. SO........here is what I learned......... Treestand was pretty much like everyone said so far as far as placement, sun shine, cover, etc. Now one day I was in the stand and had a little too much water on the way in and really had to pee. I didn't have a bottle, just my camelback in my pack . So rather than getting down and going back towards the truck I just let it go, over the side of the stand. About 20 minutes later a doe and small buck come down the trail and start feeding around. Buck was too small so I just watched them. They ended up feeding right up under my stand, almost licking the ladder below me. The doe walked around and stuck her nose right in the pine needles where I had just peed and went on with her business. Not even the slightest bit of alarm. Now I am not saying that people should not worry about sent control, etc but it sure didn't bother those deer that day. Maybe drinking only water helps cut out any "odd" odors that the deer may associate with humans???? Now for the ground blind....I set it up about 2 weeks prior to the season thinking it would have enough time for the deer to get used to it. It was brushed in really well. I was shooting some new expandables so rather than use the shoot through mesh I unzipped it about half way so that I had a clear opening. (It had been shut the two weeks prior) The very first deer to come along that day...two bucks... immediately hit the breaks the first time the looked in my direction, started stomping and walked off stiff legged and nervous. Couldn't figure it out, I was dressed in all black and sitting on the back edge of the blind. That day when I left I left the blind with the window half down. Next day went back in there, wind had shifted so I had to use the stand. WELL as soon as the sun came up over the ridge that ground blind was almost glowing in the sunshine, even with all the brushing in I did, and the half open window looked like a Black Hole going into the Abyss in the surrounding vegetation. No wonder those deer did what they did. They noticed that black hole immediately and knew something had changed in their backyard. I left the window down the rest of the hunt and used the ground blind about 2 weeks later and by then the deer were once again coming through unalarmed and "used" to the hole. So I want to experiment more with expandables through mesh, or just go back to a fixed blade so as to be able to utilize the shoot through mesh for what it was intended for. jeff

Same here. Started shooting a Black Widow Recurve a few years ago with some help of a good friend. I was fortunate enough to harvest a Coues buck with it spot/stalk about 3 years ago. Was going to go after Javelina next month with it, but think I am going to take the ole t/c Renegade instead. jeff

Got it........THANKS!! Jeff

I will tell you, the population is great, unfortunately the majority of them are on private land. NM G&F as well as our NWTF Biologist are working with the landowners hoping that the hunters can get on their land. I was down there 2 springs ago and called in 4 mature toms in one morning. Couple of them on Forest land, couple came up to a county road that went through private. One thing about these birds is that they are all native. None have been transplanted into this area. We are really working hard to get the habitat back in order on the Forest lands. So, to make a long story even longer I would think It would be worth a $10 bill to have a chance at this. You have the entire regular spring season to hunt, April 15-May10. jeff
