    My 2007/2008 Coues deer hunts

Alright Tommy, Almost the end of the year, looking forward to an update on the AZ hunt as well as your thoughts as you head into the Burros!

    Where are we all from?

From Silver City as well, 20 minutes from everywhere! Jeff

    Quality of Burros bucks

Here is my .02 on the burros. Yes there is good quality bucks in the burros. However, I believe that you can find just as good quality in other areas of SW NM, if not better. The thing about the burros, as stated above, is that by NM standards there is a higher concentration of deer than in other areas. This does not necessarily mean that the quality is better, you may just have more of a greater chance at seeing those bigger bucks. If research is done in any of the other units I gaurantee you that you can find coues, maybe not in high numbers, but coues none the less.

    disapearing camera

I am with everyone else here. I am a coues hunter that lives in Silver City. You see more and more posts of cameras being stolen in AZ and I have been happy that similar instances are not occuring as often here in NM. However, if it starts we as a hunting community need to stand up for ourselves and stick up for one another. This guy that stole the cameras is probably the same kind of person that would poach a deer, cut a green tree, drive off roadways, etc. We should not stand by and let it happen. Post the pictures of the man so that we can know who to watch out for. I have cameras in unit 24 right now, not chained or locked or nothing. I know that may be stupid on my part, but I know that I can trust all the true, honest hunters out there. Lets not let one jerk start a trend! Jeff

    2008/2009 Rules & Regs

Noticed that! Did you see my comment above that I edited? ELK PRICY! There is going to be one more goulds survey done in December on their winter range if we can get a weekend that has some decent weather. Jeff
  9. http://forums.coueswhitetail.com/forums/in...?showtopic=6644 Good Luck All depends on your type of hunting style, spot/stalk, treestand, calling, etc. Jeff
  10. There is a gas station in Glenwood that used to sell license's. I bet they still do, however am not positive. They should open at 8 or 9 Sunday morning and be open till 5 or 6. Or you could always call them at 575-539-2321. If that is not the case then the only other place along 180 to get a license would be in Cliff, at the gas station there. Only other options would be Reserve or Silver City. Hope this helps. Jeff

    Need a Coues Cape

If anyone has a Coues cape that they can part with I would like to get my hands on one. I am trying my hand at Taxidermy and am needing some big game animals to practice on. I have a set of coues antlers I would love to put together, just need a cape! Thanks Jeff

    Kade Is On a Roll

That is one fine trophy. Is this the same young man you got that nice muley in the burros in years past? If so then man, congrats to him for drawing another. Jeff
  15. This is a great thing!! I know that other organizations have done this in the past, however this seems to be taking it up a notch by gathering all kinds of valuable information from the deer, not just antler scores. Just so everyone knows, a Coues took a similar contest two years ago. I believe it is on the last page of the New Mexico pics, hunter is Patrick Finch. That sucker blew all the Carps out of the water! Jeff

    Need a Coues Cape

Don't know if you got my IM. I definately am interested in atleast one. I am sure there are others, as stated above, that are looking for them too. I would be willing to see what kind of shape its in, even after 5+ yrs in freezer. IM me and let me know. THanks Jeff

    NM Goulds Turkey Pics

A joint effort is taking place between the NM G&F and the NM Chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation to work towards a Lottery hunt for a Goulds turkey in NM similar to what AZ has done. This pictures are from a weekend in May where we went down into the boothill to do a count/study. I believe that as a result of these efforts over the last couple of years that the Goulds is either off or almost off the endangered species list in NM allowing us to move forward with trying to get a hunt set up. Jeff
  18. I agree Tommy, I haven't ever seen genetics like that around this area. Kevin, after reading another one of your posts I saw where you have a different hunt. Would be great to get together. Talk to you all later. Jeff
  19. Yeah, I did. He is a great guy. Are you hunting with Stan and Jason this year? I met your dad one day out at the shop and he told me I hear you've been talking with my son Kevin on the computer? It took me a minute to figure out what he was saying, because I know another Kevin down in Cruces. Next time your up this way let me know. Maybe we could all hook up and spend some time in the hills. That was a great turkey by the way. I didn't even buy a tag this year. Just focused my time on taking friends and family out. I called in my brother-in-laws first bird this spring. That was more fun than getting one myself. Jeff

    Burro Mountains in unit 23

I agree with what hunt4horns said earlier. This tag is THE tag for coues deer in NM and people have put in for that hunt for years and never drawn it so you will understand if people are not real upfront with areas/tactics. There are coues all over the hunt area from trees to open flats. Pick an area that suits your style of hunting, i.e. treestand or spot and stalk, and do some scouting. Again, there are coues deer in most all areas of that part of the unit, it will be just a matter of being out there to see them. Jeff
