Bear with me everyone My son is on the biggest adventure of his life, as of this week my youngest is officially: United States Marine Corps Recruit Hailey...I'm afraid 13 weeks of Bootcamp is going to be harder on Mom! My baby is grown up! We are VERY Proud!! "Son, you outgrew my lap, but never my heart!"

Wow!!!! That just about sums it up! My husband and I just returned from British Columbia. I booked an archery Canadian Moose hunt with Jeff Lander/ Primitive Outfitters, mainly an archery outfitter, met him at the ISE show. My husband was going for support, photographer, and hopefully meat packer. We drove up, took 5 days to get there, we saw some of the most amazing country and the timing was perfect, the fall colors were spectacular all the way up especially through Banff and Jasper National Parks. We got to the ranch late afternoon, approximately 50 miles east of Prince George, BC, I was able to get some shots in and reassure myself I was zeroed in. Met the outfitter and then our guide for the next 4 days. We were to go into a wilderness area for 4 days and tent camp, then float a river for the next 4 days and hunt on the river. We were surprised when our guide asked us if we were willing to ride horses, we said “why not” the whole time terrified because neither of us has ridden in many years. I was astounded at how thick the woods were, it was impossible to see 5 yards in. The first 2 days were slow, no rutting activity, saw a small bull decided to practice a stalk little did we no the ‘big guy’ was about 10 feet off the road, we never saw him until he busted deeper into the mess of willows. Our only hope was if the weather got colder and the rut kicked in, AND we could pull the bulls out into the old logging punches. The first 2 days it rained and rained, on the second night it cleared and got cold (freezing cold) that morning we woke with frost on our sleep bags and hopes that the rut had started. We walked into the wilderness area that morning and left the horses at camp, within a mile we got a bull to respond. We worked him for about an hour and a half, he came off a ridge about a mile, we had him at 30 yards grunting and scraping his huge paddles. I was a nervous wreck! He was only 30 yards away but he was just a shadow through the thick brush, I couldn’t see him let alone shoot him. Just as he was really fired up and tearing up the trees closest to him the wind hit the back of our necks and we were busted… That afternoon I was too sore to ride (it killed my knees) so we asked if we could walk out of camp. We walked the opposite way from the wilderness area so as to let the bull from the morning settle down. A mile and a half from camp we had a bull answer our call, it sounded very faint and far away, my guide Aaron said “lets go get him” he rounded the corner, the next thing I know he was in a back peddle with big round eyes!!! He said ‘draw your bow’ I looked at him like he was nuts, he told me “they were right there, two good bulls, draw your bow” I drew and went around the corner, I saw the 2 bulls, the one on the left had a nice drop tine, I never even looked at the other one, I knew which one I wanted. The bull jumped back a few steps, my guide told he was at 70 yards, I told him I wouldn’t take a shot over 50 yards (I can but choose not to), I told him I had to get closer. We huddled together, hugged the willows and walked closer doing our best to act, look, and sound like a bull moose. We moved up 30 yards, the whole time the bulls nervously trying to figure out what we were. Aaron told me 42 yards, I stepped out, he was turning to run, Aaron grunted one more time, the drop tine bull gave me a hard quarter and “THWAK” we could see him start to go down not too far away, close to the logging punch. I was a mess, I hugged my guide, my husband and of course tears were shed. We noticed he was trying to get back up so I crept in to about 5 yards and blasted through the willow limbs and finished it quickly. Now I’ve seen elk down and they were big, but a moose down is over whelming!!! We were able to drag him by truck to the road and quarter him, the whole time someone standing off to the side with the rifle guarding against grizzlies. The bull was guessed at around 1100 lbs. he was about 7 feet at the shoulder, around 8 - 10 years (in his prime), and a 41” spread. I was and am thrilled!!! I can’t thank my husband enough for going along with my crazy hunting ideas. He supports and knows the passion I have for this sport and I love him even more for that. We were able to bring over 200 lbs of the most delicious boneless meat I’ve ever eaten, home, we had to leave about 80 lbs there since we didn’t have enough room in the 4 ice chest we had. An amazing trip and experience, saw lots of wildlife and even got to put a couple of stalks on huge black bears but could only get within 70 yards, maybe next Spring! you didnt happen to see any suspicious characters that might have swiped my sd card? and how many stands did you run into? my buddy and me have our two stands hagging up on two tanks in the area and there is a stinkin' old stand up at my tank, but it had no ladder to it and looks like its been up for 10 years or so. i wouldnt want to get up in it. just curious cause i was gonna hunt that area opening weekend but will change my game plan if there are a hundred other stands in the area. We saw the 2 stands at that particular tank, guy in a white truck with Broncos sticker (won't hold that against him) coming out of there. Couple other stands in nearby area at other tanks or guzzlers, pretty much everywhere we went, stands or cameras...

I was in there this past weekend. Never thought that spot got much attention Silly me! Tree stands everywhere!

Do you still have all the instruction manuals and attachments ie:cords, ect..??? I have a rhino and lost another one in unit 9 this last year. Ilene

Well I'm gonna ask... My son has been hunting his butt off in 7E this week for a bull. He works from 7:00pm until 2:00am, gets up at 4:30am and is on the mountain and hiking into his spot by sun up. He hunts, hikes, glasses until sundown and goes back into work. He scouted hard before season, thought he knew where they were but never anticipated the number of people that would be out there. He passed up a spike on the second day, now he can't even find a spike! My husband has been out with him most the time, I blew up my shoulder a week or so ago so I am pretty limited with what I can do, I am great at sitting tanks . They have been up high on the mountain, gone down to around Indian Flats, sat water, just way too many people and the elk have vanished... Does anyone have any ideas? Suggestions? We hunt out of our house since it is only 15 minutes to hunting area. I sure appreciate any help, this kid has really impressed me with his effort, would like to see him connect, he's really getting frustrated... Ilene

Thanks! We have been over by Strawberry Crater, absolutely no water over there! Even the trick tanks are either dry or frozen solid, they need water right now, don't they??? Appreciate the help!

Well, it has happened...My kids have grown up We have been taking our boys out to the woods since they were babies, our oldest son was in deer camp when he was 2 months old. We hunt, fish and camped as much as possible when they were young. They got old enough to take Hunters Safety and started putting in for the draws. Our oldest has 2 deer, 1 bull, 2 javalinas, and until yesterday 2 turkeys. Our youngest has a deer, and has been on other hunts without harvesting. The thing is, their father and/or myself has always been with them when they hunt....This year we were informed that the oldest wanted to go turkey hunting with one of his buddies, and the youngest wanted to go by his self...Hey what about me!!! I have a turkey tag I wanna go! Nope they had their plans, they had scouted without us, now they were going to hunt without us. I thought they would go out, not find anything and come back and beg for our help NOPE, opening day the oldest was in our driveway by 8:00 a.m. with a giant smile on his face and a big 'ol hen in is arms. Youngest couldn't go out until Sat. because of school and football, Saturday he only had until 10:00a.m. because of football again. We get a call to ask us if we can meet him at the school and pick up his Tom because he doesn't want to be late for practice...OH MY You turn around for just a second, look back and your kids are all grown up!! Hey Jim, I was up there this past weekend scouting again, stopped in Tusayan for gas and happened to see the Grand Canyon Newspaper with the picture of you giving the elk a drink, no name was given in the paper. My husband and I laughed and asked each other "who would be crazy enough to go up and give an elk a drink like that"? Now we know!!!! Nice job! And may I add my 'Thank You's' to the list, the unit is still dry, but looking much much better, every catchment I went to was full..... Ilene

Spent Saturday and Sunday up in Unit 9. Got poured on Saturday!!! Especially over by Russell Tank and up through the Skinner Tank area (last time I leave my trailer home, tents are nice, BUT ). I met Tom the guy hauling water for the AES, he's doing a great job! I wanted to give a big 'Thank you' to the AES, the catchments are looking good and are all getting hit hard by the elk and every other critter in the area!! Keep the rain coming!!!!!!!!! Ilene
