Are you talking about the Hopi tags that are leftover?
-
When they first made that change it was only for non-residents, and residents were still limited to one genus per application year for LE hunts. Do you know if they now allow residents to do the same?

How to bring about a consistent draw result release date
1uglydude replied to Xnt's topic in Elk Hunting
Josh, during the March Commission meeting the Department noted that the contract with the vendor that does all of the automated credit card processing for ALL state agencies was due to expire on March 26th. It wasn't explicitly said, but it seemed to be implied that they were shooting to finish up the draw before that date so that they wouldn't have any issues. Obviously, they had problems running the actual draw, which (and this is a huge guess on my part) means that they weren't actually able to run everything before the contract expired. That being the case, I wouldn't doubt it if the longer than usual delay can be attributed to the fact that they are, in fact, having to manually run some cards. That's why some of the rumors about guys getting calls from the Department as late as last week may actually be true. At the March meeting, the guy who reported from the Department said something to the effect of "after the contract expires on March 26, we do not have any system in place for running cards for the draw." He said that they system they were developing for the deer draw should be ready in time for that draw, but that it currently has some serious issues. When the March minutes are available I'm going to look back to see exactly what was recorded. -
To be fair, I think edited my question about the same time I think you were responding. Bison, sheep, and pronghorn all may have a creep problem. The last time I checked, all the other hunts only have the issue for non-residents. When I get some time I will look at it again. The 10% non-resident cap makes it look like creep is happening on the basic draw reports, but when you drill down into it you see that it doesn't impact residents.
-
Please identify which deer and elk hunts have problems with "point creep" for RESIDENT hunters.

I have an unopened one pound can of H335. I want an unopened can of H4831sc. Must be short cut. Not interested in selling, the last guy who gave me a sob story about needing the powder for an upcoming hunt flipped it on another board with a 40% markup. Now I just want powder for powder.

There are 5000 applicants for premium hunts that have 25 to 100 tags. On those hunts you're only removing 25 to 100 applicants the next year, so odds are only improved by 0.01% for those hunts. There are less than 500 "premium" elk tags offered in any year. How does punishing the 19,500 other guys who are fine wth late season bull and cow tags justify increasing odds by 0.01% for guys who are already resigned to waiting many years?
-
That's an early rifle hunt in the rut. Very different from the late hunt, as many ill-informed have learned the hard way.

Who keeps starting these rumors? Waiting periods are not being considered as part of the Article 1 amendments. I won't go into why they won't work anyways because people don't seem to like it when you show them the math. perhaps some misunderstanding regarding the meeting minutes.. Motion: Harris moved and Mansell seconded THAT THE COMMISSION VOTE TO LIFT THE NONRESIDENT CAP FOR JAVELINA AND TO APPROVE A ONE YEAR WAITING PERIOD FOR YOUTH ONLY. Commissioner Davis clarified with Chairman Harris that the motion was for the Department to bring back some language and evaluation of the impact of a potential one year waiting period for youth only, and that this was for the report only and not a determination to implement at this point. Vote: Unanimous 4 to 0 I stand corrected. Thanks for pointing that out. I followed the process early on and wasn't able to watch the January Commission meeting. It sounds like the waiting period is direction that came from the dais. Guess I need to stop calling it a rumor. Glad the waiting period for bull hunts is off the table. It would only hurt those of us willing to hunt on late season tags.

What unit is easier to draw then a youth hunt other then a dec hunt in 7,9 or 10,i am not seeing it can you tell me what units you are looking at so I can put my grandson in there, what about the adults put in for these hunts and give the tags to there kids. I will send you a PM
-
In the future, I think everyone should take a close look at exactly how bad the odds for youth cow tags are compared to some of the general rifle cow tags out there. Personally, I won't be putting my kids in for youth cow tags. Why have a kid possibly draw once every four years when he can pull a standard cow tag every other year? Kids lose interest fast. I'd rather pony up an extra $80 and hunt a few weeks later in the year than have my kid sitting at home year after year.
-
Congrats. I'd put money on it being the two archery tags. You have at least a 1/10 chance of picking one up in those units in any given year. The early bull tag would be less than 1%, plus whatever odds would have been stacked up against him for the cow tag.

Muzzleloader scopes are designed specifically for the recoil of that type of weapon. Typically, this means giving the shooter greater eye relief. Vortex is already notorious for giving the absolute minimum eye relief of just about any scope manufacturer, so be careful the first time you pull that trigger using a riflescope on a muzzleloader. I have the Omega, and I also have the $75 Cabelas Powderhorn BDC. I like them both very much and have never had a problem holding zero or seeing a critter out to 200 yards in low light.

Thanks, I like the idea but he won't be 10 until September. One way or another I'm going to get him out hunting this fall. If not elk than deer, and if neither of those work out I'll get him out predator calling. There are always leftover junior javelina tags in the fall, and junior fall turkey is OTC.

Based on how the draw works, I think "idiot" would be a great term for whomever came up with that rumor. If not "idiot," then "ignorant" and "irresponsible." That would be like saying "only people who's last names begin with A-L are being considered first."
-
Because they're messing with all of you worry-warts...that's why. Sheesh.
-
I was thinking the same thing. Kind of slow today. Instead of wasting employer time checking for credit card charges, they're tracking how their bracket is doing. I had Dayton beating Ohio State, so I'm still on track to win my billion dollars.

Upon reading it closer, it appears that the no refund rule only applies to combo licenses, which non-residents can't buy anyways: http://www.wildlife.state.nm.us/recreation/hunting/documents/FAQOnlineapp.pdf "If I am not successful, do I get a refund for the game hunting license? Refunds options are available for game hunting licenses purchased in conjunction with the draw. To be eligible for a refund the applicant MUST choose the refund option AND must be unsuccessful for all big game applications. If the refund option is not chosen, refunds will not be given. There is NO refund option for game hunting and fishing combination licenses."
-
Not true. They refund the license/tag fee for the animal, but not your general hunting license you have to buy. See the bottom of page 5 on their FAQ about the draw.

i really dont understand this comment. you do a lot of illegal stuff like killing endangered species?I think you need to go back and read 1uglydude post he seems to have a good understanding of how this works Whether or not it was an acceptable incidental take depends on whether the removal of competing squirrels was authorized under the recovery plan. The press release seems to suggest that it was, and it would certainly make sense, but if it wasn't then I'm sure we will hear more about this.
-
me too . But at my work I'm not a wild life expert who killed an endangered animal. Up to now I've been some what supportive of the dept. But my opinions will be shaped by the punishment handed out. If I accidentally shot a wolf tomorrow and there's a different punishment I think we can all agree that's crap. What if you had been tasked with eliminating another species of wolf that looked very similar and made an honest mistake? He was told to shoot other squirrels on site. It's not like he was out shooting whatever moved for fun.Incidental take as part if a larger recovery effort is not the same as intentional take or take as a result of unrelated activities...nor should it be. There is a reason "incidental take" is a defined term under section 7 of the ESA. who gets to decide what species gets eliminated and what species gets to live? It's outlined in the recovery plan approved by USFW and administered by either the federal or state agency, whichever is assigned to that particular population. Here, the elimination of competing squirrels is sanctioned as part of the recovery plan. The accidental take of the target species as part of official the official recovery plan is designated as an "incidental take." If the take meets the legal definition of an incidental take (which it appears was likely the case here) then there will not be any individual punishment. What's the difference between an agent doing it and you or me? Well, we don't have the authority under the ESA to take the actions that could potentially result in this type of incidental take. The shooting of a red squirrel that's not related to a sanctioned recovery action would be per se actionable.

If I decide to give my children an allowance then I'm going to require that they set aside at least $2 per week for tags. I've been paying for my own permits and tags since I was 12 years old because my father had no desire to go. I appreciated it a lot more. I remember saving and scraping anywhere I could to be able to save $70 for a season-long waterfowl permit for the Ute reservation in eastern Utah. Until I was 16 year old, it was probably the largest financial transaction I made each year...and well worth it.

Josh, it has been an item of discussion at commission meetings and i believe it may have even been listed in the regs. Found it. Page 2 under important information for 2014.
