Last year there was a herd that got hit on Shea in Scottsdale out in front of the Mayo Clinic. They must have been bunched up because 8 or 9 of them died.

That's a sweet painting. I can't make out the artist's name. Do you know who painted it?
-
Did you apply for the same rifle pig tag you had last year? If so, that's a 100% draw, do that' would probably be it.

That's pretty cool. I'll take it if he falls through. I live just down the street from you.

They extended the update deadline by one week to Nov. 2nd, but didn't bother to tell anyone. Seems like it would have been easy to issue some sort of press release or Facebook notification. If only they had a website for that sort of thing.

Awesome! Something you may want to consider, even though you have permission to post it, you gave everyone the kid's FULL name and birthday, including the year. You may want to go back and edit out some of that. Just some friendly advice.

Leaving tomorrow for New Mexico hunt
1uglydude replied to Couestracker's topic in Muzzleloader hunting for Coues Deer
I'm not able to leave until Friday morning, but I'll be in NM unit 27. I only have Saturday and a half day Sunday to get it done, so I'm not going to be picky.- 14 replies

Barnes Spit-Fire T-EZ muzzleloader bullets
1uglydude replied to Mesabulls's topic in Muzzleloader hunting for Coues Deer
Old thread, I know, but I'm 99% certain that Barnes gives the "EZ" designation to those tipped muzzleloader bullets that are flat based, as opposed to full boat tail design. Boat tail saboted bullets are notoriously difficult to load an seat correctly, in all brands and makes. The angle on the base just doesn't line up correctly. Flat based sabots doing have the problem and generally slide in quite easily. I have used both the T-EZ and the TMZ, and like them both. Recently I got a good deal on bunch of the TMZs, and took the advice I found on some of the muzzeleloading forums and purchased some aftermarket Harvester Crushed-ribbed sabots made for 50 cal boattails. The doing that really tighted up the groups for me. -
Do you have a general rule for how much you trim? Is it just what you can get to quickly and easily? What do you need to spend to get into what you consider "high end?" $500?
-
Slim, Not to hijack the thread, but I'm thinking about getting a grinder for all critters, not just javelina, and I'm wondering exactly how much silver skin you realistically have to remove. I'm told that the better your grinder (motor, metal gears, etc), the better off you are, but I'm not really sure what the standard would be. Does only the thickest part of the silver skin around the major muscles and the tendons need to be removed? What about the flank meat around the rips and sides of deer? I'd love to grind that, but if you removed all the silver skin you wouldn't have much meat left and it would take forever. What about the calf muscle group? Could you just cut the tendons off the ends and then chuck it and grind? Lots of meat in there, but also a ton of thin silver skin.

Very very cool. I have a petite little daughter coming up on hunting age, and the LOP and pistol grip issues are what have me worried in her case. Even the youth stocks seem to have the same pistol grip dimensions as the full sized versions.

Their point is that you can draw the 24A HAM tag and then pick up the 33 archery tag as a leftover. Then you have two tags with seasons running for nearly 5 weeks total. You can't do the reverse though because there are never any leftover 24A HAM tags.

This is what a 70gr tsx fired from a 20" AR15 looks like when a kid shoots a doe right through the ham and square in the hip at 75 yards. Bullet recovered on the far side after traversing the width of the deer and weaving in and out of the pelvic bone.

Awesome! What are the details on the rifle? Looks like a Savage? Caliber? Did you do the painting yourself?

Congrats! Cool for him that he was able to use a round that he reloaded himself.

Performance of solid copper ammo or lack of
1uglydude replied to apache12's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
I use Barnes bullets exclusively, and we were also on the junior doe hunt this past weekend. Three deer were taken with Barnes. Two with the 80gr ttsx over minimum loads of H4350 and fired out of .243 Win rifles with 18.5" barrels, and one shot with a 70gr tsx out of an AR15. All of the deer went down quickly. One of the shots with the 243 was over 200 yards and we recovered that bullet under the far hide. The entry wound destroyed the front shoulder. I have yet to lose an animal with a Barnes bullet and I don't like the idea of lead fragments in the meat we work so hard to bring home, so I'll stick with them. -
Congrats to the hunter! Where were you camped? We were up there with a group of kids too. It was a long haul round trip from the Valley, but very fun.

Need Help with choosing .243 or 7mm-08 Remington/Savage or Ruger???
1uglydude replied to Stallone A.'s topic in Youth Hunters
Does the Tikka T3 even come in a youth model? Would a full sized T3 fit your 10 year old? If you're worried about the cost of getting another gun later, then don't. People buy used youth models that have been well care in a heartbeat. You shouldn't have any problem recouping 80% or more of your investment to apply towards a larger gun when the time is right. Also consider the fact that your soon to be 10 year old will probably outgrow the gun not too long before your 2.5 year old is ready to take it on. There's a good chance that you're going to need two rifles in the next six years either way. -
I love RL 17 in my 270 wsm. Amazing velocity and accuracy. I use the 129gr Barnes LRX, so I contacted Barnes and talked to the rep about the best start and max loads. My max turned out to be 62 grains and I load at 61.4. That gives me 3350fps with no pressure signs.

I hope you kicked their butts on the field.

Can you actually still hunt unit 32? And a AZGFD mini-rant.

Even assuming new roads can be created that don't cross private lands (highly unlikely in those areas), you're forgetting that the Department would still need the permission of the Forest Service to build a road on federal lands. Good luck with that. As for going to court for easements, if there was a legal leg to stand on, the Department would be doing it. You're all trying to extend the laws about adversely possessing an access easement to private property to the public property context. It doesn't work that way, even if that's what TV and the movies have led you to believe. The Department has shown in the past that it is willing to buy easements where offered at a reasonable price, but what motivation does a landowner have to sell such an easement? By doing so, he automatically lowers the value of his land because no future purchaser would be able to have complete control over the land anymore. Instead, the landowner could offer access that is less temporary than a permanent easement. That's what you see in most of 36C. Those agreements give the landowner the flexibility to respond quickly to issues that arise and it doesn't impact the resale value of their land. -
Need Help with choosing .243 or 7mm-08 Remington/Savage or Ruger???
1uglydude replied to Stallone A.'s topic in Youth Hunters
I thought that was the case, but I couldn't find anything on the axis and accutrigger. I probably didn't look hard enough. Yeah definitely go with the Axis II if not going for the Trophy Hunter. If you end up going Savage...I'll be interested to see what you choose and what you think of it since I'll be in the same boat next year. I bought the original savage axis in 243 without the scope. My plan was to let my daughters boyfriends who wanted to get into hunting use it. I had hoped to be able to buy a box of 100 grain core lokts at walmart and send them out the door with it. Who cares if they scratched the tupperware it is stocked with. Doesn't like 100 grain factory loads. It shoots 87 grain Sierras really good though. The trigger is really stiff. Pretty good buy overall for 3 bills. I bought a Marlin XS7 in 7mm-08 for my daughter. Great all around caliber, very accurate with a sweet trigger. The only limitation that I don't like on the Axis II is that, so far, they only offer the youth model in .243. I'd love to see them offer it in .223 and 7mm08. It may be in the works, but they haven't made it available as of yet. -
It's the next large canyon to the southeast of Four Mile. A mile or so before you come into Klondyke.

We are taking six kids up on the 12aw doe hunt next week. At least one of them will be shooting the 70gr ttsx out of my 20" AR. I don't have any worries about the bullet or cartridges capabities. Either puts it in the boiler room, or you have a long tracking job....same result regardless of the rifle used.
