HSUS Files in Arizona to ban Mountain Lion, Bobcat Hunting

You would think Game n Fish would foot the $ A government agency can't officially fund a campaign for or against something on the ballot. If it makes the ballot, it will pass. Once that passes, bears will be next. It's only a matter of time. We've got an education referendum on the ballot in 2018 that's going to get the soccer moms out in force. We are also likely to see an initiative for recreational marijuana, which is going to get the stoners and liberal urbanites out in force. We are also going to see the usual mid-term kick against the party holding the White House, which will bring the anti-Trump movement out in force. It's a great year to attack hunting with the ballot box.

    It is reality....Bass Pro/Cabelas

Never happen unless they put it in Queen Creek. The Town of Gilbert Planning and Zoning Board approved the development plan for the Gilbert Cabelas literally the week before the merger was announced. It was supposed to just south of the San Tan Mall off of Market Street. After the merger was announced, the developer's attorneys said the plan was on hold indefinitely--which is commercial real estate speak for "it's dead." I can't stand Bass Pro. Selection is meh, but the prices absolutely suck.

    Loren McReynolds Goes Down

Ever tried to coordinate ANYTHING with the feds? He's got federal wildlife charges, federal wild horse and burro charges, and federal firearms coming his way. That means the Department had to deal with FBI, federal fish and wildlife, Dept. of Ag., Dept. of Interior, and ATF. I'm surprised it didn't take 40 years. Plus, if they kept discovering more and more as they dug deeper, then it would make sense that they'd want to have it all ready to go as one package before they busted his door down.

    Unit 23 Question

We left our camp in 23 unattended during the HAM javelina hunt last year. When we returned there were fresh tire tracks coming in our camp and shells from what appeared to be hardboiled eggs spread around one side of the camp. Nothing was missing, but someone obviously took their time to have a closer look at our stuff--all the while peeling eggs for a snack? It was odd.

    First Bear...

Sure it wasn't a raccoon carcass? Nah, G&F confirmed it was a bear Let's see if this thread blows up too. :-)
  9. Bump...because in the next 24 hours I'm going to have to decide if I want to take advantage of a Labor Day sale to buy some brass for this beast. :-) If I still have it then I will feel compelled to start buying components when they're on sale.

    .257 Roy Loads

When you make your 257 brass from 7 mag do you use new 7 mag brass, or can use use once-fired? Also, how has your neck thickness been? Are they tight? Have you had to turn the necks at all? I only use new brass to start loads. Originally i used .264 win mag brass because I found 50rds of Winchester brass on the shelf. I loaded that for awhile. The necks were a little tight, but not bad. I got about 4-5 loads out of most of that brass before the primer pockets got loose enough to make them trash. I now load Remington 7mm Rem Mag brass, and only start with new fresh brass. The necks actually seem to be better than the 264 brass was, and I am getting a little better lift out of these, probably 5-7 loadings before the pockets are loose. I have gotten an occasional neck crack with both types of brass, but not often. Neither type of brass has had to be cut for length which is nice. I will true them up every 2nd or 3rd loading if they need it. I form my brass by full length sizing the new brass, then load it with a lighter load and shoot it for practice. Then I load them up as normal, but I keep in mind that the case capacity is about 5% less than a true 257 case so I just load til I find pressure signs and an accuracy node. I got lucky and found a good load fairly easily that will shot well under MOA with 115gr Bergers over H1000. I can get the full load info if you need it. The reason I originally loaded 264 brass was because I own a 7mm and I didn't want to mix up rounds. Once my 264 brass was toast though any brass was hard to find let alone 264 brass, so I moved to 7mm Remington headstamp because I had a bunch of it brand new sitting on my bench. At the same time though I got rid of all my once fired Remington headstamp brass that was actually 7mm Mag so I reduced the risk of mix up. I load remington brass for my 257 Weatherby, and federal brass for my 7mm. That way I know what rounds are what without having to pull the rounds out of the case and look at the shoulders and bullets. Does it have to be new brass? I ask because I keep seeing people write that, but no one seems to offer an explanation as to why it can't be once-fired, annealed brass. I shoot the 100gr ttsx, but I have several hundred of the 100gr tsx that I would like to use for javelina. I'd like to save the firings on my expensive brass for the longer range hunting. So I'm looking to have brass that I'm not as worried about available for pig hunting. But, if I've got to buy new 7mm brass, then I'm not sure if the hassle would be worth the incremental change in cost for factory 257 brass.

How do you handle preparation? Do you skin them or burn off the spines...or is there another method?

I load the 100gr TTSX using 7828ssc. I have used RL22, H4831sc, and H1000...and all of them were acceptable, but mine shines with the 7828.

    7mm-08

Have you used that 145 LRX on any game yet? That is what I'll be hunting with this year, but haven't tied it yet. Between me, my buddy, his wife, and four youth hunters we have taken 2 bulls, 3 cows, 6 mule deer, 3 coues deer, and 7 javelina with the 145 LRX...from 50 yards out to 410 yards. All were one shot kills. Never tracked anything farther than 30 yards.

    7mm-08

I've been using the 145gr LRX with a near max load of RL17. My velocity is 2900fps out of a 24" barrel. Last year I started loading the 110gr TTSX with RL15 for a Model Seven my buddy's daughters use. Out of the short barrel we still get 3150fps and amazing groups. We've only used it on javelina so far, but last year one girl killed at 215 and the other at 275 yards with very quick, hard kills.

    Propane tank certification

Well, yeah, but I'm not saying you exchange the tank EVERY time, only when You have an expired tank. Once you do the exchange you have a tank that is now certified for refilling for the next 12 years. Once you recertify a tank it has to be certified again and again every 5 years.
  17. 1uglydude

    Propane tank certification

HNo. You sure about that? Recertification is like $10-15. Cost to exchange is typically less than $10 more than the cost to fill an empty tank.

    Propane tank certification

Isn't it cheaper to just exchange the empty expired tank for a full tank that already has a valid certification? Assuming it's a standard size of course.

Excited for my son's first big game hunt

His original post says the kid drew an elk tag. So...neither.
  20. Muzzleloader scopes typically have a little more eye relief than standard rifle scopes. They do that because those 150gr loads tend to buck. The recoil is different from what you are used to with rifles. It's not necessarily worse, just different, with more movement.

    Leftover poll

The updated list is a day behind. If you look at the date on top it will say updated 8/2 for today I know. They posted it yesterday at about 5:30pm. My point is that by the time they had posted it they had already awarded tags that were not reflected on the document. They didn't process my girl's pig tag application in the middle of the night, it was done sometime yesterday during business hours--it just showed up on the portal overnight.

    Leftover poll

By the way, the updated lists of leftovers are obviously outdated before they're even posted. The list they put out yesterday evening showed no change since the prior day in the number of tags for the javelina hunt I put my girl in for, but this morning her portal was updated as having received the tag. They probably update the list early in the day, but keep processing applications until closing time. So, by the time the updated list is actually posted they've already burned through quite a few more tags.

    Leftover poll

The get several THOUSAND envelopes the first day. While they go through the mail from the first day before they go through any mail that comes in on subsequent days, the mail from that first day will have envelopes that were mailed on BOTH Friday and Saturday. The post office just throws it all together in one pile over the weekend and Game and Fish picks up the bins on Monday. Where your envelope falls within those first day mail bins is totally random.

    12A West Youth Hunt - Who's going?

Really? That drastic of a difference in a month? No...it's still very easy. In fact, it's easier in some ways because by the late hunt they have usually moved west down into the more open country so you can see them easier. The only people I have seen have challenges on the second hunt are those people who are looking for deer up on top--where they are used to hunting on the earlier hunt.
