True, but then there are those who think there are B&C animals running out of every bush! Funny thing is they don't even know the difference between an 80" and a 85" buck but when they hit the ground and they aren't what they thought they paid for the fun begins!
-
Bret, One thing that wasn't mentioned is that if there is a legal antelope on the ranch you are assigned then you will have a hard time getting the warden to sign you onto another ranch. We had three hunters last year on our ranches that wanted to shoot a nice 85" or bigger buck--the three ranches we had but didn't retain this year only had 80" to 82" bucks and the game warden said you need to shoot one of these bucks. They decided not to shoot one of those and went home disgruntled. If you get on a ranch and there are no bucks then the warden will assign you to another ranch without any issues but they can be a tough bunch--just be cool with them and they are usually really good guys--give them a hard time and you might get to spend the weekend in the hoosegow--over there, if you are a non-resident they will lock you up for any violations until the JP comes in on Monday--make sure you read all of the rules before you go hunting.

new bill in Senate - feeding wildlife
TLH replied to couestaxi's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
A bill was passed a few years ago that has the same verbiage in it--why do we need another one?? I have the bills here and they are almost identical. The law is in place already?? -
Tony Grimmett is a master scorer for SCI and he is on the west side. If you look up Pronghorn Guide Service in the phone book you will find his number there. Marvin Zieser is an official scorer for P&Y and he can get you hooked up with a couple of B&C scorers--Marvin is in the phone book.

I have the 10x42 Geovids with the range finder built in and they are some of the clearest glass i have ever looked through--pretty high dollar but worth it to me. I just bought a pair of 15x56 Swarovski's with an adapter for $1488.00. These are new but are the 2004 model and are from a Swarovski dealer. They have more if anyone is interested i can tell you where i bought them.

Digital Camera Problems
TLH replied to desertsheep's topic in Photography of Coues Deer and Other Wildlife
It could just be the view finder too. If it is the view finder your picture's might be fine. You could have gotten some condensation in your camera where the viewfinder is located. You won't be able to fix them in the camera so if i were you i would just down load them and see what you have. Good luck! -
I see you got connected Josh--Harold was asking if you got a chance to get your hands on this thing. Terry

I don't think Nappy will pick a man for this appointment so you all might want to think about someone like Mary Jo Miller, this lady is smart, knows a few things about government and she listens to people when they speak--not just hear them.

I hunted the 21 Dec. hunt this year and i would say that they gave out about 200 more tags than they should have. Instead of adding tags they really should look into the biological impact of these extra tags. I am all for shutting a unit down for about three years to let the deer population grow--i am also all for some kind of credit for predator hunting (not a bonus point) but some kind of special hunt that if you shoot "X"amount of Coyote's you get "X" amount of raffle tickets to be drawn for a special hunt, if you kill a lion you get twice that many raffle tickets. I really think the game and fish need to be creative to help with the predator problem we are having and this is just one way to get more hunters in the field to hunt these predators. The AZSFW is alive and kicking and they are doing things that we might not see up front--i am not a member yet but i think i will be as soon as the membership drive gets underway. I do know they are fighting hard to get the 15 million dollars back from the state that the state stole from the Heritage fund. The Heritage fund is for the game and fish and other organizations that are made to help wildlife and help with getting people involved with the outdoors--the state took the money to use in areas that is out of the realm of the heritage fund. Leanord's last name is Ordaway and he will listen to you--email him, or give him a call.

Holey smack!! I am glad i wasn't out this weekend!! I was babysitting my sick wife. But i will tell ya this, i have a red quad and so does my buddy Mark. If i would have been hunting i would have been in unit 21. I swear it wasn't me!! Really though, if i walk into a tank and someone else is there i get the heck out of there with as little noise as possible--that is the right thing to do when someone else is already there.

Neat finds while roaming the hills

No Bill, this guy was propped up on what looked like tree trunks and was wrapped up in some kind of fur or rawhide--he was put there on purpose. -

Getting tougher to find wildlife managers
TLH replied to Diamondbackaz's topic in Miscellaneous Items related to Coues Deer
Bill, i never said we had it yet but we are working on it. In the mean time, there is a group that wants to be just as you said and that group is the Arizona Sportsman for Wildlife. This group has been silent lately but i think it will come back strong real soon. I think this group will be powerful and i think i will be a part of it but i will not dive in with both feet until i see how it goes. We sure could use a group that is totally for the sportsman and woman in this state and i think the AWF could be that group, however, that said, the ASfW can give the state the extra boost that can help fight off many things that we have experienced as of late. -
There is one that they are working on and if i can remember that site was built by the Arizona Antelope Foundation. I will have to search for it and then i can post it on here. I have a flyer here at the house and i can get the info off of that for you if you need it.

Back in those days i didn't even know what a camera was--i still see it all in my minds eye though. The cool thing that i seen was that the pots were full of all kinds of stuff--arrowheads, what looked like dried food, and some really pretty beads of some kind. I would think he was some kind of highly respected person but i am not sure what his status was. My Uncle, God rest his soul, was a full blooded Cherokee and he said he thought the guy was a Chief because of the way he was dressed up, i think he was right. Josh, any hardware store should have navel jelly. It is the stuff that the Navy uses to get the rust off of their ships--or at least that is what my old Pappy said, the old Navy man that he is/was. -
Getting tougher to find wildlife managers

Bill, it will change to the way it used to be--we will have input from all sides of the world but the bottom line is that the AWF is and always will be a group who cares about the future of hunting and fishing in Arizona. The new web site will have most of the hunting groups linked to it. I won't get disgusted and i will stay in there and do what we all need to do. -

Getting tougher to find wildlife managers
TLH replied to Diamondbackaz's topic in Miscellaneous Items related to Coues Deer
This is actually how the Game and Fish was started: The first major project of the AWF after its founding in 1923 was legislation to get politics out of wildlife management. They accomplished this by drafting a state game code which provided for a Commission/Department form of wildlife administration. It wasn't willingly accepted by the politicians of that day, including the governor, but was finally adopted by referendum in 1928. Neither the governor nor his henchmen were willing to accept this accomplishment, and in 1930 tried to again take control of Game and Fish. With the help of its affiliate organizations the AWF managed to beat back this effort. Despite other attempts over the years, including the most recent effort some 15 years ago, we continue to have essentially the same type of administration as was established about 70 years ago. In 1958, through efforts of the AWF, the game code was revised to its current form without altering the Commission/Department structure. The AWF supported a revision of the state water code to specifically establish wildlife as a beneficial use of water. This made possible the development of many fishing lakes, especially on the Mogollon Rim. The AWF supported the introduction of pronghorn antelope to the Arizona Strip, the Fort Apache Indian Reservation, and other historic pronghorn habitats. The introduction of the Merriam Turkey into suitable habitat, including the Kaibab Plateau, was also strongly backed by the AWF. The AWF was also instrumental in the establishment of the federal Kofa Game Refuge for the protection and management of the desert bighorn, leading eventually to the opening of this magnificent big game species to limited hunting. AWF members were also involved in the development of Arizona's buffalo herds and in the re-introduction of elk in this state. Since the creation of the Arizona Game and Fish Commission the AWF has worked closely with the sitting governor in screening and endorsing qualified individuals as Commission members. The AWF and the Arizona Cattle Growers Association established a Stockmen-Sportsmen Committee to address the problem of vandalism on the rangelands of the state. The AWF worked closely with the Department and Commission, the University of Arizona and the Wildlife Management Institue to establish a Cooperative Wildlife Research Unit at the University. -

Yea, those are the pictures. Neat place! I agree with you about not telling--i would hate to see anything happen to that site. I thought about telling the forest service but thought they might not be the one's to tell--so, i have kept it to myself and have never been back. -

I was hunting pigs in the Weavers a few years ago and had to answer mother natures call, as i stepped behind a tree i noticed an old rifle leaning against a tree. I thought that was pretty cool so i grabbed it, checked to see if it was loaded but couldn't get the bolt back. I took it back to Hillside that night and while visiting a buddy of mine i mentioned the rifle, come to find out one of his friends had set it down while packing a buck out about ten years earlier--the guys buddy was very happy to get it back because it belonged to his Grandfather and he had given it to him when he was about 8 years old--the guy was in his late 80's so he had that rifle a long time. He wanted to give me money for it but i was just happy to give it back to him. When i was about 18 i went hunting in unit 23--i really don't want to say exactly where but it was north of Roosevelt lake in a very big and bad canyon. I was working down through a steep side of a canyon through some real thick scrub oak when i noticed a cave that was big enough to walk up right into. I poked my head into the cave and found that it went in a ways, so being the nosy dude i am i walked in about 100 feet and found myself looking at an Indian resting on 4 tall tree trunk and some kind of animal fur wrapped around him--being the better part of an Indian myself it gave me goosebumps all the way down my back to my toes. My old uncle told me if i ever walked into a burial cave or ground that the spirits of the persons family will be watching and if i desecrate the site by taking anything or touching anything that i would be punished for it--i didn't ask what the punishment would be. I noticed a lot of pottery around the cave, a bow with arrows, one was nocked in the string, some blankets and an old rifle leaning against the burial stand. To this day i have never told anyone where this is at and you would have to be damned lucky to find it. That is the coolest and spookiest thing i have ever found in my life. I did find what looked like and old hide out in the Aravipa Canyon about ten years ago while whitetail hunting, i took my wife in there two years ago and it was just like i left it--i remember the thing that was the coolest was an old can of corn still intact with the corn still inside that had a date of 1923 on it. I have pictures of that somewhere. Josh, you can use navel jelly on that old bayonet and it should break it down with out harming the scabbard. -
Ernesto, that is a sweet buck man!! Way to go! I will post the picture over on the AZOD board for you. I think they all could use a great buck to look at!

We used cams at waterholes last year to find who was stealing our tree stands--we got a couple of pictures but i can't post them because of some kind of court order. The people who were taking the stands were anti-hunters out of Flagstaff. We like to setup one cheaper cam on a tree and then setup another one further away from the tree. I really am not worried about people knowing that i do this because it might make them think a couple of times before they mess with anyones stuff.

Doug, I found a lot of quail while hunting the burns. I found the most behind that big water hole about two miles in off of I-17. We also saw two mulies rutting back in there and my hunting buddy missed a bedded buck at 35 yards--he thought the buck would get up and look to see what the noise was but the buck never even looked--he just jumped up and ran! Higher up on Bloody Basin Road i found great deer sign where the burn was and noted that the deer were eating the charcoal off of the tree's--there were good numbers of quail there too.

Been glassing all over the place and have only seen one small 3x3 and some does--has anyone connected in 21 yet? Also, have any of you seen any of the bucks looking remotely like they are starting the rut? The 3x3 was rubbing the tree's and marking his spot but like i said, he was a little guy. Any who--good luck to all of you who has a tag! I will be out there again tomorrow and then Tuesday again--then it is back to work a couple days and then Christmas and then back at em'!!

Went back up to Squaw Peak yesterday and hunted the entire day with out seeing a deer--at least not a Coues. I did see a cow and calf elk and then i glassed up a monster 7 point bull elk! He had his left side busted at the brow tine but the other side was long and he had good mass--the points weren't that long so i would guess he is an old bull. Wish i would have had a tag for bull elk yesterday!!
