Shout Out to Junior at Timber Mesa Queen Creek
rossislider posted a topic in Bows, arrows, broadheads
Anyone in the fear east valley who shoots archery, or wants to shoot archery needs to be sure to swing by Timber Mesa's shop in Queen Creek. I busted the slide on my bow while shooting this afternoon and swung by to get a new one. Since I was going, I took Draysen (my 13 year old son) and his bow down with me. He has had his current bow for a couple of years and in that time has probably grown at least a foot. As always, Junior set what he was doing aside to take care of us and took the necessary time to get Draysen squared away. Draysen is right at the edge of outgrowing his current bow. But unlike a lot of guys at other shops, he didn't push us into a new bow we weren't prepared to buy and helped get the current one set up to last him a bit longer. Great service and a good guy. make sure you stop in and see Junior. -

This guy (Todd Rice) is bad news and has been discussed on here in the past a lot. This as a good thing. http://www.coueswhitetail.com/forums/topic/46823-beware-of-sonoran-outfitters/?hl=%2Btodd+%2Brice -
NWTF East Valley Toms Banquet March 3, 2018 Tempe Elks Lodge**LAST CALL**
rossislider replied to 125coues's topic in Conservation Group Events
Sounds like we are all going to be having a big birthday party! See you guys there. This will be our third year. It is usually my wife, Draysen, and I. But the younger two are getting to the age where I am thinking about maybe bringing them as well. We should get there early and grab a table or two together. Mark - Will there be more tickets/seating with the bigger venue this year? For any who may be thinking of going, this is a great event, especially if you want to take the family and youngsters. It doesn't tend to go as late as a lot of other banquets and they do a great job of getting the kids involved in the activities. -
Removable Brake question
rossislider replied to apache12's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
You bring up a good point that I struggled with for a while. I used to randomly pack up for hunts (pack, pouches, pockets, etc) randomly filling space. A few years ago I decided to start designating pockets for certain things and do not deviate from it. For example, X pocket always has ear plugs, pocket knife, etc. Y pocket always has the range finder, calls, etc. This has made a big difference for me, I'm no longer searching though various pockets, pouches, etc when I need something since I know it is always in the same place. It takes a little discipline, but it has helped me a ton. -
Need advice on Taxidermist, Cold Storage and Meat Donation
rossislider replied to Speedy's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
Shoot, if you will be traveling through Phoenix (I am in the far south east valley in Queen Creek, but work right by the Phoenix airport), I'd be more than happy to take the coues meat off your hands. I'd also be happy to store your javelina meat in my chest freezer till you are headed out of town. -
drawing a tag on a 2md choice is a whole different ballgame than drawing a tag on a 3rd choice. Only the worst of the worst hunts get drawn on 3-5th choices. Yes thank you. This was my point. Nothing to do with meat. Only way you are drawing your third choice is if you put in for the worst of the worst hunts. You won't draw a decent cow hunt as a third choice. Also, a large percentage of the hunts you would draw on your third choice could have been picked up as left over tags. Thus saving your old points and the new one you would have gotten for the current year.

Putting a third choice on an elk app is pretty much a waste of time. Definitely a waste of any points.

Nice, congratulations! You packed him out whole? Just like Adam to give you his cold. Next time tell him he has to stay in his own bed no matter how much he begs.

Removable Brake question
rossislider replied to apache12's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
Nice of you to worry about your hunting partners, but their hands are aren't full of rifle. So if necessary they can cover their ears. I always keep my plugs in my chest bino pouch as well as a couple of individual packs of the foam ones in case buddies forget. Like pretty much everyone said, put that brake on and leave it there. -
Nice job!

Youth Application Age - The Unanswerable Question

Daughter took the hunter ed course when she was 9 Yeah, something isn't right here. The can definitely take Hunter Education as soon as they are 9. My kids did it this way. -
Youth Application Age - The Unanswerable Question
rossislider replied to rossislider's topic in Youth Hunters
That was it and it made sense when they explained it to me last summer. Thanks for the reminder of why I gut-checked myself when I first complained. It is a valid point, but poaching is poaching, and someone who did this would be guilty of poaching. The argument that odds of being checked are slim hold for just about everything in hunting. A lot of what we are charged to do when hunting is a honor system. -
Youth Application Age - The Unanswerable Question
rossislider replied to rossislider's topic in Youth Hunters
I think the line is pretty clear and what I suggest would clarify and simplify it for everyone. I don't see any grounds to move the line for someone else. If they are legal to hunt at 10, why should it matter where in the hunt they turn 10 as long as the hunt is open and they don't start hunting till that day. Obviously you wouldn't be able to apply if they turn 10 the day after the hunt ends, but if it is during the hunt, why not? -

Ughhh!!! I hate so much about the stupidity of this rule. 10 is 10, let them apply and hunt! -
Youth Application Age - The Unanswerable Question
rossislider replied to rossislider's topic in Youth Hunters
I'm leaning towards doing this as well, but it seems that if no one at AZGFD can answer the question, they need to allow it, fix the online app, promise they will accept the paper app, or clarify the rule. Unfortunately, it is not in my nature to just let something like this go. There are definite advantages to putting her in for the youth hunt (time of year, cost, her fall break from school, fewer hunters to compete with, etc.) that I would really like to take advantage of. This will affect both the elk and the deer draw as their will be youth hunts that weekend for both species. -
I am curious if anyone has any personal first hand experience with both the Cabelas Anaknak tents and the more traditional canvas outfitter tents and can compare them. Most curious about comparisons in: Durability of the material Heat retention Overall value Thanks

Cabelas Anaknak vs Traditional Canvas
rossislider replied to rossislider's topic in Other Hunting Gear
I ended up going a slightly different route. Since I traditionally don't need anything overly large I got a Kodiak Canvas 10x14 Flex Bow tent. It is built like a tank and very easy to put up and take down. It doesn't have a stove pipe option for the cold weather, but I picked up one of the Mr. Heater Big Buddy heaters that is more than sufficient for what I need. I was able to get a steal on it new last spring for under $400. I also picked up a couple of painters drop cloths from Harbour Freight that I put on the floor to help keep it clean and nicer to walk around in bare foot. It is a fantastic setup! http://www.kodiakcanvas.com/10-x-14-ft-flex-bow-canvas-tent-deluxe/ -
These late hunts are inaccurately called rut hunts. They are pre-rut at best.

Hey, I'm taking my daughter to the Taylor Swift concert. She's getting stage side tickets for Christmas. I shudder when I think about how many hours I had to spend earning points on her website to get these tickets. But someone is going to be the best dad ever and a total Swiftie for one night! I have no problems with or sense of shame when it comes to buying my little princesses's love! I'm gonna be rockin it like this dad! -
I run the very system you are talking about. Reckoning on the large frame with a medium belt and the gun bearer. By far the best of anything I have ever used. Definitely give the gun bearer a try. I have carried my rifle in a regular shoulder sling for years. As most of us know, it can be a pain with a big heavy rifle over long distances. The gun bearer is awesome! It makes the weight of the rifle and the constant rubbing on my neck disappear. I thought the forward carry would bother me and get in the way. I have not found that to be the case at all.
