Other states!?!? With all the hunts my kids, wife, extended family, and friends I have committed time and help too, I won't have time for Arizona hunts of my own. Looks like I'll be applying for AZ premium hunts (basically bonus points). It is a problem I enjoy having.

Amazon is currently running a really good deal on these cut resistant gloves. They have been discussed on here in the past on a couple of different forums. I keep a pair of these in my pack for field dressing and also for processing back at home. I can't cut through them with a new disposable blade. They go on skin tight and probably weigh less than an ounce. They also give you a little extra grip. I think I paid $10 for my pair 5-6 years ago after a trip to urgent care for stitches to my hand after a hunt. With promo code P5UFGIGQ you get two pairs for $6.35 with free Prime shipping. I highly recommend them. If you are like me and tend to get moving a little to quick with the knife at times, you will be glad you had them https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0791WHD47/ref=nosim/?tag=theblacom06-20

Was that the store off of Southern and Stapley?
-
I don't get why they aren't closing the rim. Seems like an easy decision. Now you will have every Memorial day camper concentrated in one small area in record dry conditions. What could go wrong?
-
I've been wondering about that. Holiday weekends have to be huge for economies like Payson. The impact of a closure could be bad for them, even though I believe most residents would be all for it.

One could hope.

I think this might to be a tough package to sell everything together. You may have better luck selling the rifle and binos separately. -
Cut Resistant Gloves for Field Dressing
rossislider replied to rossislider's topic in Other Hunting Gear
I should also add that these are washable and reusable. They will soak up quite a bit of blood (animal blood), tissue, fat, in the material. So when I use them in the field, I keep them in my kill kit in a sandwich baggie, and put them back in the baggie when done. When I get home, I soak them in hot soapy water to get the heavy stuff out and then throw them in the washing machine. Works great. -
Anyone know what ever happened with the lady that started the Chediski fire? If I remember, she wasn't criminally charged, but in a civil court was found liable for just shy of $60,000,000 in damages. Anything happen with that?

https://www.fs.usda.gov/detail/asnf/news-events/?cid=FSEPRD580394 Forest Managers Plan Area Closures as Conditions WorsenRelease Date: May 16, 2018 Due to increasing drought conditions and high to very high fire danger across the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forests (ASNFs), area closures will be implemented in some parts of the forest. Areas outside of the closures with remain in Stage II Fire Restrictions. Closure areas are decided upon by district and forest leadership with the primary objective of providing protection to communities at risk of wildland fire. Prevailing southwest winds are consistent to areas within the geographical location of the ASNFs and will play a role in determining locations of area closures. ASNFs wants concerned citizens to know that forest closures are not taken lightly, as they affect many people, businesses, partner agencies, important restoration and other work on the forest, and the public. When forest closures are in effect, everyone is prohibited from entering the forest – including Forest Service personnel, unless they are responding to a wildfire or other emergency or patrolling to ensure enforcement of the closure. Work on thinning and other forest and watershed restoration projects ceases under a forest closure. Partner agencies, organizations, concessionaires, outfitters, permit holders, and contractors, including utilities, are all prohibited from entering the forest to even make repairs or work on infrastructure running through the national forest. Only emergency or other very limited exceptions are made. While the Forests hope we never have to go into a full forest closure, it is always a possibility depending on conditions and if there is an increase in human caused fires. Fire and public contact patrols have been increased on all districts along with firefighting personnel. Information is being disseminated far and wide about forest conditions and the need to be extremely careful when using the forest. The public can help by spreading the word, reporting violators, and making sure their homes and communities are Firewise. When it comes to implementing both fire restrictions and closures, community sentiment is always a major consideration for us. We balance the need for restrictions with the ability for the public to enjoy and retain economic benefits from the National Forest. We hear a range of opinions and comments from our local community members and our visitors and consider these very seriously in our decisions about what level of restrictions or closures to implement and when. When plans are finalized, information will be shared on when and where the area closures will be implemented. Fines & punishments for violating fire restrictions: Violating Stage II fire restrictions or going into a closed area is a violation that carries a mandatory appearance in federal court. Violation of these restrictions is punishable as a Class B misdemeanor, which means a fine of up to $5,000 for an individual or $10,000 for an organization, or imprisonment of up to six months, or both. Fines and punishments are determined by a federal court judge. I've already talked to 3 different coworkers who are planning on going camping this weekend and had no clue about fire restrictions.

Apache-Sitgreaves Forest Closures Imminent
rossislider replied to rossislider's topic in The Campfire
He looked to be in pretty rough shape. -
I had the same thought. Just like the presence of feral horses is a burden to the landscape and wild animals, feral horse lovers hauling in water for the horses is also going to benefit the native animals.
-
They are drinking up the little water there is this year that should be going to the native wild animals as opposed to the feral animals that have been turned loose.

I get why he does it, but I'm likewise not a fan of that hashtag or any hashtags/information on social media that give away units.
-
Absolutely do I consider Shane my buddy. Flatlander is 100% spot on in his statement. Again, I don't knock Jay for it, but there is a huge difference in a guide talking up the unit he specializes in and a guy with Jay's platform (Flatlander suggested 100x the microphone, I'd suggest at least 1000x the microphone) moving the numbers.
-
EXACTLY! I was waiting for someone to mention that one.
-
Yeah, that friend (who is really good guy) guided a client last year who took the biggest deer to probably ever come out of that unit. Now 50,000 guys are going to think there is 210+ inch mule deer buck behind every tree and not realizing what an unusual deal it was. I'm estimating we will see some point creep in there this upcoming draw cycle.
-
I blame the Jay Scott Podcast for throwing things off in 3C. I enjoy the podcasts, but I think his unit by unit breakdowns throw things out of whack. I know things have been said on his podcasts that seem to have coincided with some big draw/point/creep swings soon after. I personally wouldn't ever pick a unit based upon something I hear on his show. How many thousands of others just got the same tip and idea??? I think this probably holds true even more true for non-residents who don't have the on the ground knowledge and rely on sources like Jay. Just to be clear, I don't know Jay, and this isn't in any way meant to be a knock on him or his show. I applaud him for his success, and enjoy the podcast. But it sure seems to have had an effect on some units. Maybe it is in my head, but it sure doesn't seem like it.

4A Juniors Elk Hunt Looking for a Camping Partner with Other Juniors
rossislider replied to azbullelkman's topic in Elk Hunting
Have you considered going to or camping with the elk/deer youth camp group Arizona Deer Association puts on? That would be my pick. -
I have the 1600b, bought it a few years ago and paid almost twice this much. It has been a great rangefinder. This is a smoking good deal.

Hiking in before light! Scare them off?
rossislider replied to stanley's topic in Rifle hunting for Coues Deer
I have a couple of spots I frequent and have had to except that it is pretty much inevitable that I am going to spook a few deer when I hike in. It seems to happen more often than not, and I can't conceive of a way that I can avoid it and still get to where I need to go. Fortunately, they deer I have bumped just seem to move a ridge over and haven't been pushed out of play. I feel I am better off going into the area in the dark rather than the early light. I would probably spook the "hike-in deer" regardless of the time I walk in, but am less likely to spook deer in the areas I plan to glass by hiking in the dark than I would if it were light when they are more likely to see me. -
Look at the youth Kiabab doe hunts. I have never been on one, but have been told that it is about as road hunt friendly as you can get.

As far as theatrics, visual effects, etc, it was probably the most impressive concert I have seen. My daughter had a blast! Sang and danced her heart out the whole time. -
