  1. Before I pose this question I'll explain the situation. My 9 year old daughter will turn 10 this year on October 13th. I would like to put her application in for some of the youth hunts that open on October 12th. If she were drawn we simply wouldn't hunt the opening day and start on her birthday. Here lies the problem, I have read through he regs and rule books on the subject of youth hunter age multiple times. The only specification is that the youth hunter must be 10 in order to hunt big game. NOWHERE does it specify that they must be 10 prior to the opening day of the hunt. In a past year I helped a friend try to put his son for a hunt in a similar situation where the hunter turned 10 somewhere during the course hunt, but after opening day. The online application process would not let us complete the application because the hunter would not be 10 by opening day. So when people have asked this question in the past, I have always give the answer that they must be 10 prior to opening day. But, there in nowhere that I can find in the AZGFD rules that states this. I have now had a conversation with an individual at the east Mesa AZGFD office and another individual at the main office in Phoenix. Both were stumped and neither were able to answer this question about age on opening day vs a birthday during the hunt and why the application would not be accepted. Based on the way the rules are explained in the regs, I can't see any reason why someone in my daughter's situation should not be able to apply for a hunt in this situation, provided they begin their hunt on or after their birthday. Since the online application will likely not accept the application, I am tempted to just do a paper application for her. However, I do not want to run the risk of having her application tossed/rejected. Last night I reached out to a friend who also happens to be an AZGFD warden out of Mesa. He was able to get me the contact information for the person who oversees the draw, and I plan to reach out to her today. In the meantime I am curious who may have run into this situation in the past and was anyone ever able to get a clear answer? Seems to me that unless their is a specific rule that states 10 on or prior to opening day, someone turning 10 during the hunt should be able to apply. Thanks

    Cowboy casket

That thing is awesome! I'd be proud to be buried in it. However, I hope that wont be necessary for at least another 40 years, despite the scare the doctor game my wife and I this weekend. Told me he thought I might be in kidney failure and put me though a truck load of tests. It was just really bad and intense food poisoning.

Youth Application Age - The Unanswerable Question

Have to be 10 before the start of the hunt. So if the hunt starts on say the 25th and the kid is 10 on the 25th it's a no go. At least that is how it has been explained to me. You are correct, I confirmed this with multiple individuals at AZGFD. We were bummed at first because my daughter had to miss the youth hunts by 1 day. But it ended up working out for the better, much better, as she was rewarded with a 3C deer tag for two weeks after her birthday. It will be a pretty great first hunt for her.

    Trail Camera Opinion/Review?

I think the main goal would be fun outings/hikes with the kids to set up, check, and hopefully get an idea if anything good is in the area. Don't expect to see much because of the camera model or just trail cams in general?

    Toyota Tacoma vs Nissan Frontier

I can't say much about the Tacomas as I have never owned one and think brand bashing it stupid. I hear they are great trucks. But my 2008 Nissan Frontier was the best and most reliable truck I have ever owned until it finally started to have major transmission issues a couple of months ago right at 210,000 miles, at which point I traded it in. Until that point, I drove it everywhere and through everything (many hunts with it). I even once drove out with two whole elk (gutted) in the bed. It never spent a day in the shop. Just oil changes, brakes, tires, batteries, etc. All the routine simple stuff I did myself. If I were in the market for a small truck, it would be the first thing I would look at. If I am not mistaken, they are considerably less than the Tacomas. Good luck

I think they have a 90 day return policy. I could try them for a month and return if they are garbage.

    Lets talk boots

I have major foot and ankle issues and have tried on about everything I could find locally or at shows. I was going to buy the non-insulated Crispi Nevada as they seemed to be the best combination of comfort and support I tried in a non-insulated boot. But I really wanted a 10 inch boot and the Nevadas are 8 inch. Their 10 inch version on the Nevadas are the Guide boot, but they weren't making them in non-insulated at the time. I called Crispi this winter and was told they would have them available soon. I now see them available on their website. That would be my choice/recommendation.

    Foot operation done!

Good luck buddy. Those days and weeks sitting in the chair can be long, but better days ahead.
  11. Last fall we removed the quarters, backstraps, neck meat, etc. and dumped the rest. Came back 24 hours later to see if it had any visitors and found this about 30 yards from where we left it.

Fire Restrictions Coming to an End!

Effective Wednesday (7/11) at 8:00 AM Coconino National Forest will be lifting all fire restrictions! I'm sure the rest will be shortly behind. Thank goodness for the rain!!! I know we aren't out of the woods yet, so please continue to be smart and safe, but I'd also like to give a huge shout out to our forest, wildlife, and firefighting agencies for doing what I consider to be a pretty amazing job this year. This year had the makings to be a terrible fire season, but these groups did such great work and seemed to have such a great plan that every fire that popped up got jumped on and out fast. Well done!!! Likewise, amazing work by many organization like the Arizona Elk Society for trucking in hundreds of thousands of gallons of water to our wildlife. I think we once again showed that NOONE loves and cares more about our wildlife than hunters. https://www.fs.usda.gov/detail/coconino/news-events/?cid=FSEPRD586542 Coconino NF to lift fire restrictions, area closures WednesdayRelease Date: Jul 9, 2018 Contact(s): Coconino National Forest, 928.527.3600 FLAGSTAFF, Ariz., July 9, 2018, For Immediate Release – Coconino National Forest will lift all fire restrictions and area closures this Wednesday (7/11) at 8 a.m. due to the recent increase in moisture and humidity, as well as the decreasing fire danger across the entire forest and a forecast of more rain over the next 10 days. The National Weather Service predicts increased moisture for the region over the next seven to 10 days, with 1-2 inches of rain accumulation predicted during this period. This will continue to significantly reduce the fire danger over the next couple of days, allowing for the complete rescission of restrictions and closures on Wednesday. Campgrounds across the forest will be open, but some require reservations through www.recreation.gov and may temporarily have limited water and other services, so check the status of your particular campground before heading out by contacting the district office of where the campground is located. District office contact information can be found online at www.CoconinoNationalForest.us. In addition to temporary limitations at campgrounds, access and reservations to Fossil Creek may also be limited for a short time while operations return to normal. The public can purchase a daily permit through www.recreation.gov (search "Fossil Creek Wild and Scenic River") or by calling (877) 444-6777. Permits will be available through September 30. During monsoon season the road into Fossil Creek may be closed due to wet weather; if this happens permit holders will be issued a refund. The status of Fossil Creek can be checked by calling the Fossil Creek Hotline at (928) 226-4611, where updates will be provided as received. Coconino National Forest entered Stage 1 Fire Restrictions on April 27 and moved to Stage 2 on May 4, eventually implementing area closures on May 23 for specific high risk areas.

    AZ Unit 27 Bowhunting Outfitter?

I know one of the guys (Cody) that runs Rack Out Outfitters. He specializes in and hunts 27 as much as anyone, and would be the first guy I would call for help in that unit. I think he might be able to put something together for you. https://www.facebook.com/Rack-Out-Outfitters-322340688175153/

Show Low is part of the Apache-Sitgreaves national forest, not Coconino. But I would expect to see those lifted in the next couple of weeks.

what rifle for me 14 year daughter ?

This past off season I bought a Ruger Precision in 6.5 Creedmoor for my soon to be 10 year old daughter to use this fall. My primary reason for this rifle is the highly adjustable stock. She is a petite little thing and most of my rifles would be way to big for her. The Ruger Precision comes with a factory brake, and is on the heavier side (I believe 10.7 pounds before the scope), but since I will be carrying it for her, the added weight will be a plus when she shoots. I have it shooting under .5 MOA. Here is a picture from just after I bought it, prior to mounting the scope.

    WTB Swarovski 12x50 EL

I was in the market right when they were transitioning from the previous to the current model. I was told by a guy at Outdoorsmans that the only difference between them is the strap attachment. So I jumped on a new pair of the previous model right when the price dropped. I was able to stack some discounts and came in about $1000 under the price of the current model. Love them!
