300 Win Mag hunting loads
rossislider replied to no worries's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
To build onto this, I am getting ready to start loading some rounds for a new Tikka T3x in 300 Win Mag. I am probably going to start my loads with 180 grain Berger VLDs and might also try the 178 grain Hornady ELD-Xs. I have a lot of Retumbo powder, so plan to start with that. I have the load data from Berger and Hornady already. Just curious if anyone shooting a Tikka (I find that while they do differ a bit from rifle to rifle, they do have a lot of similarities with how they shoot different recipes) has a good round using these components as a starting point for me? Thanks -
My son and I have a couple of back to back elk hunts starting next Friday up in the Show Low area. In a perfect world I would shoot mine, bring it home, process it, and be back up in time for his opener. But with the way things could lining up, there is a possibility that I may need to store mine for a period, and I like to be prepared for all possibilities. I do have several jumbo coolers, so I can store it on ice, but I have found that I really don't like to keep a lot of meat in coolers for more than a few days. I am curious what refrigerated facilities may be available in the area? I am not looking for processing, I will do all of that myself. I have spoken with Miller's who will have their cold trailer in Forest Lakes. That may be an option, though not ideal. Any ideas? Thanks

It's been a blast the last couple of mornings with my son and friends. I struggled yesterday, made some shotgun adjustments yesterday afternoon (definitely not blaming the shotgun it was 100% sucking on my part), and had a much better morning today. Between the two of us, we knocked 100 birds out of the sky. Yesterday I shot the beauty below that went straight to the taxidermist. -
Thoughts on flying with a rifle?
rossislider replied to TwoGuns's topic in Rifle hunting for Coues Deer
The first time I flew with a rifle I assumed TSA locks were required, but was told that TSA locks are not permitted by security. I don't claim to be an expert, only sharing what I was told. I assume because they don't want baggage handlers and the likes having the ability to access the firearm. Only the firearm owner should be able to access the case. When you check it in, security will come over and check it or they will take you to security. But once they do their check, they don't want anyone to be able to open it until you get it back at the final destination. -
I thought that I was the only one with that problem. I can go 10 for 10 on clays, but the dove mock me,

He definitely has his moments when I want to ring his neck, but he is a great kid. Thanks

The Cabelas hard double rifle case is rock solid and reasonably priced. I have flown with it without issues. As far as locks, you cannot use TSA locks on a rifle case. A couple of everyday keyed Master locks work great. -
I did some tinkering with the shotgun this afternoon and changed some stuff up. Expecting a better showing tomorrow.

Was out this morning shooting Eurasian at a place that is historicly 95% Eurasians. I saw and had to pull off of quite a few whitewings, probably more than I expected. The way I was shooting, I doubt I could have hit any of them anyway.

Yes, not hard to tell apart. Bigger, lighter in color, seemingly a little slower. The place we hunted was 99% Eurasians. The few whitewings were pretty easy to spot. I shot 12. My son shot much better and got 42 with the same amount of shells. Others in our group did even better. -

Why wait for tomorrow. Plenty of Eurasian out today. I averaged 1 bird per 8 shots today and only got worse as the morning progressed. 😬🤬 -

How quick can you ship a small ridge runner or x-small rear bag to me? Can I do local pick up? Only two weeks to the day till my rifle bull hunt opens up. -
when an average hunter gets a strip tag. In the field updates

Bummer, keep at it and you will turn up a slob. -
Just a recommendation, save some money and get a good carbon fiber tripod for half the price. I bought an Outdoorsman tall tripod a few years ago and sold it after a couple of hunts. I have tried probably a dozen different tripods over the last 8-10 years. I liked the Outdoorsman, but the cost/value is not even close to what you can get elsewhere.

Two weeks before the hunt??? Man, nothing like waiting till last minute. Lots of places to camp in 4A. There is a lodge in Forest Lakes in your unit. It is still getting close the 90s up there. I would plan for daytime temps reaching high 70s to low 80s on your hunt. Low temps will probably be high 40s to low 50s. If you get your meat skinned quick and hang it in the shade, you will be good for that day and that night hanging it to get it cool. Your meat temp is going to initially be much higher than the ambient temp. But after one night, I would have it in coolers so it doesn't go through a second day out in the warm temperatures. There is usually a refrigerated meat storage truck parked in Forest Lakes that is run by Miller's Southwest Processing. Might check with them to see if the allow you to hang meat till you are ready to head home. I've never had snake issues up that high. There are some there, but not the rattlers we deal with down in the desert. http://forestlakeslodge.com/ http://www.southwesternprocessing.com/

Hoping to see a lot of this starting it two weeks. Waiting is killing me!

I've run into wardens on a handful of recent hunts. All were friendly and pleasant encounters. As far as catching poachers and law breakers, they don't have to spend as much time in the field, because social media has proven to be exponentially more effective. Idiots can't help but posting all about their poached animals (see Blake Owens).

I can't believe we are several years into this pointguard process and people still need it explained to them. 🤦♂️
-
I don't think anyone is misunderstanding. You can use pointguard once before you must keep the tag, and then you start all over. I guess we just assume everyone knows that by now, so don't bother explaining it again in detail, especially now that this topic has come up at least 100 times.
-
Want some cheese with that "whine"? 😂 But seriously, if it is legal and works for you, do it. Remember, people can't point guard tags back indefinitely, or it would be problematic. They can only point guard it back one time. If someone wants to hunt bad enough, there are plenty of guaranteed or near guaranteed draw hunts. Until that changes, I am not very sympathetic to the guy that has to sit at home because he is only applying for premium tags and then complains about it. Educate yourself on how the system works and you will start getting plenty of tags. Most won't take the time to do that, which works out great for those of us that do.

Not the first time AZGFD has overstepped and gotten their hands slapped. My personal favorite were past attempts to supersede the 2nd amendment by tell archery hunters what firearms they could and could not have in their possession while archery hunting. The AZ legislature had to step in and shut that stupidity down. I appreciate AZGFD, genuinely believe that they do a pretty great job overall, and are very well intended. Just seems that sometimes they try to roll things out without a lot of forethought and due diligence.

With a few exceptions, their customer service is severely lacking.
