Any Preppers out there?
rossislider replied to Coach's topic in Political Discussions related to hunting
I don't think I could say it any better than you did coach! -
For me I kind of rate them as follows. No rhyme or reason, just my opinion: -280 to 330 is a nice bull -330 to 350 is a big bull -350 to 380 is a huge bull -380+ is a monster Of course this is simplified and there are many other factors I would consider. Given the opportunity someday, I doubt I could ever restrain myself from letting the strings fly on anything beyond 350. My first and only bull is in the 290-300 range and I couldn't be prouder of him!

Applying for the upcoming javelina draw- any downside being under the old license regime?
rossislider replied to AndrewJ's topic in Javelina
I just bought my lifetime license, in part to avoid this type of stuff. -
LOL, I think this statement says volumes. (I assume it is a joke?)

This is what I have heard.

I'd also take into consideration what you've already told him. If you said no grades no hunting but then back down, you might have a hard time getting him to take you seriously next time.
-
Tough call! It would be terrible to waste a tag, but him missing out on this might be the one thing that makes him realize you are serious. I'd stick with your grades stand and if he doesn't make the grade, donate the tags.

Pretty awesome! I love to see other states producing quality bulls. Hopefully it will keep them hunting at home.
-
I've heard stories where the state took the bull but the hunter was later able to buy it back at some sort of sale/auction.

Part two...Great opening weekend in Unit 1
rossislider replied to Pine Donkey's topic in Elk Hunting
Nicely done and great story! -
Of the two I'd go 7mm mag. I like the ballistics a lot better.

The noise is actually a lot better/quiter than I had expected. I wouldn't recommend a lot of shooting without earplugs, but I fired it a couple of times without earplugs to see if it was going to bother my wife or son in hunting situations. I've shot a lot of other big caliber rifles without brakes that were worse. That my fairly skinny 9 year old will shoot it over and over without fearing the recoil makes it worth it.

Here is a picture of the brake I had put on the Tikka t3 7-08 I mentioned above. After seeing brakes put on several barrels by a number of different gunsmiths, I've come to the opinion that my guy does the cleanest brakes in the business. I've actually had several guys try to argue with me that this isn't a brake added to the end of the barrel, but holes drilled into the barrel itself. I'd have a hard time arguing with them had I not watched the brake go on the barrel. It has made this gun super easy for my 9 year old son to fire.

I picked up a tikka t3 lite in 7mm-08 for my wife and son. Haven't had a chance to hunt with it yet, but so far so good. The rifle is super light so I put a brake on it to lighten the recoil for them. One of my hunting buddies bought a tikka t3 light stainless in 7mm mag. With the load we have worked up, it is shooting awesome groupings. 100 yards, 3 rounds

Who cares......?!+1 wait till the latest story comes out. Its very good. Why? Did the hunter actually have to get out of his truck to shoot this time?

What are your preferred gun cleaning solvents and oils?
rossislider posted a topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
I've used Hoppe's 9 for years followed up by Hoppe's lubricating oil for my general gun cleaning purposes. Recently I have started using Breakfree CLP more and more. I also recently had M-Pro 7 recommended to me over Hoppe's 9, followed up by Slip 2000 oil. Is getting into the expensive cleaners and oils overkill? I was curious to see what some of you guys who know much more than me think and like to use. Thanks -
That is awesome! Congratulation!

Hey twowindy, I know a great taxidermist if you need one.

I ordered a bunch on backorder a few months ago. I was just notified that that part of my order is in. I still have h335 on back order, but if it doesn't come in the next week or so I am going to have them go ahead and ship the rest. If you can wait a week or two I should have several extra 1 pound canisters that I'll let go.

Help us out and spend the time you would shooting more than one deer by hunting and killing our lions and coyotes!

7mm Mag Loads. Updated with hunt story!
rossislider replied to outdoor rush's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
My buddy has the same rifle and shoots outstanding groups with 4831sc at 62 grains. Bullet (Barnes ttsx 150 grain) seated to mag length. Here is a picture of his 3 shot group at 100 yards: -
Nice job Will and Cody! Is this the one Cody mentioned you might have to backpack it in for?
-
As someone who has put in for that hunt for several consecutive years but has not drawn, please do not waste the tag, I might cry. It is a great unit and you could have a great hunt.

Sweet bulls and amazing job by all. Congratulations!
