I think my wife and I are headed up.

Nice job. We are up in unit 1. My boy had an opportunity this morning, but we couldn't quite make it happen. Birds seemed very quiet today.

I was able to free up my schedule for next weekend, so I am going to take my 10 year old son up to the youth turkey camp up by Big Lake. I have hunted most things Arizona has to offer, but this will be my first time with turkey. I have a few questions and need some advice on his set up to ensure him the best opportunity at bringing home a turkey. Santa brought him a youth 20 gauge Remington 870 Express for Christmas last year and has gotten pretty good with it over the past few months. It comes standard with a modified choke. I am think I should probably get a super-full/turkey choke this week before the hunt and get it patterned. Does anyone have any choke and turkey ammo suggestions that they have used with success on a 20 gauge 870 Express? I know I should have started figuring all this out a long time ago, but this kind of snuck up on me. Thanks

I experienced this last year with my son and my buddy's son. My son turned 10 a month prior to the junior deer hunt we wanted to apply for. His son turned 10 on the second day of the hunt. We thought we would put them in and just starting hunting on his birthday, day 2 of the hunt. We tried to apply on line but the the online app would not let us proceed because he would not have been 10 by day 1 of the hunt.

I really don't think you can start till they are 10. I would also love to hear from someone that knows for certain. Will the AZGFD website allow you to buy a license for someone under 9?

A Couple of New Muzzle Brakes
rossislider replied to rossislider's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
I have shot the 300 RUM both before and after the brake. On all occasions I have been under half MOA at 200 yards and the velocity did not change on my chronograph. So I won't say for a 100% certainty that accuracy and velocity were not affected. But if it was, it was so small that my shooting skill level could not show it. -
I wanted to send a big public thank you to Ammon ( aka Little Creek Calls). I had planned to attend his calling seminar at Sportsman's Warehouse in Mesa last week, but wasn't able to make it due to a work commitment. I'm headed up to the youth turkey camp in the White Mountains this weekend with my 10 year old son and neither of us have ever hunted turkey before. I called him yesterday to find out how I could get a call from him so I could start learning and practicing. He was busy getting ready for his own turkey hunt, but still invited me over late last night and took about an hour to give me some coaching! Really a first class move by a first class guy. If you are ever in need of a premium handmade turkey call be sure to check his stuff out! http://www.littlecreekcalls.com/

A Couple of New Muzzle Brakes
rossislider replied to rossislider's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
A few people have been asking about gunsmiths and muzzle brakes recently, so I thought I'd renew this old thread of mine from a couple of years ago. -
I have both types of brakes. I have pictures of them in a different thread. I'll include a link: http://www.coueswhitetail.com/forums/topic/40519-a-couple-of-new-muzzle-brakes/ This link also includes a review of the two different gunsmiths I used at the end of the thread. If I recall correctly, both were in the neighborhood of $200 to install. I went with a Shrewd brake on the 7-08 because I wanted a smaller profile brake on the 7-08 and didn't need to tame the recoil as much as I would on a big magnum rifle. I think the biggest negative to this type of brake is the 360 degree ports will tend to kick up more dirt when shooting from a prone position. Again, this was not as big of a concern on this type of rifle. I went with a Badger Thruster on the 300 RUM because I didn't mind the larger profile on this beast of rifle, and I wanted to bring the recoil down as much as possible. Mission accomplished as my 10 year old 85 pound son loves shooting this cannon. I think my .243 without a brake has more felt recoil than this 300 RUM. Yes, the people next to me at the range just about wet their pants after I fire off my first round, but that is half the fun. They make ear protection for a reason. From what I have heard and read, a brake does not actually increase the volume of a rifle, it just re-channels the direction of the volume from in front of you beside you. But I'm sure other on here know more about that than I do. As the shooter, I don't believe I notice the volume change that much, but standing to the side of someone shooting it really makes a HUGE difference. In the field I carry a few pairs the cheap foam earplugs in the belt waist compartment of my pack for quick access.

LOL, how many chances will you give us to guess it correctly?

Big thanks TRKHNTR for all the advice and coaching over the past two days. I look forward to hopefully meeting you up at the camp this weekend.

Advice Needed on a Youth 20 Gauge Turkey Setup

Thanks for all the suggestions. I am going to go out tonight and pattern the shotgun with the choke and shells I picked up. I'll post up some pictures tonight. -
Clean vs. Dirty vs. Cold bore

I haven't done nearly as much experimenting as you, but I have noticed my groups tend to tighten up after 3-4 fouling shots have gone down a clean barrel. My normal pre-hunt routine is to get all my sighting in and practicing done, clean the barrel, fire 3-4 fouling rounds, and put the rifle away till hunting time. I like to carry a bore snake with me in the field for light cleaning should I get dirt or something in the barrel, but that is it. -
Sorry, the brass is gone. I might still have the RCBS FL dies. I can check this evening.

I have 46 pieces of once fired 30-06 brass. I sold the rifle a couple of years ago and the brass has just been sitting with my loading equipment. Happy to give it to anyone willing to pick it up. I just ask that you only take it if you plan to use it, not sell it. I have the brass in Queen Creek but can also take it with me to Tempe during the week. Thanks

I registered to take my son up the the White Mountain camp. It sounds like a great experience for both of us as I have never turkey hunted either. Due to work, we won't be able to get up there till late Thursday evening. Will that affect his ability to get a mentor to help? Is it a first come first serve thing with mentors? When I registered him a few weeks ago I offered to help with any I can in camp, but didn't hear anything back about that. Should I speak with someone about helping? Thanks

Advice Needed on a Youth 20 Gauge Turkey Setup

Any particular choke or ammo brands that you all are having better luck patterning? -
Lots of great rifles to chose from. I'm a big Tikka fan and own two, a 7-08 and a 7mm Rem Mag. For an awesome tag like your wife has, I'd definitely go with the largest caliber (for distance/energy down range) that she can handle. I personally wouldn't want to take the chance of limiting a shot opportunities because of the rifle. Any caliber can be manageable with a good brake. For example, my 10 year old son has no problem shooting my 300 RUM with a brake. All things considered, I'd go with a 7mm Rem Mag.

Pretty cool, I'd love to build one of these.

I like to fish with the big CD-11s. Amazing the size of fish that will go for those big lures. They are all I use now when fish the south fork of the Snake up in Idaho.

Planning on going up to the youth camp by Big Lake as well. Who else is going?
