I ended up buying the Eberlestock Just one. It's very comfortable. I like the option of the backscabbard to get my gun out of my hands when not needed and the center compartment that expands to hold meat (it also has a mesh panel for air flow to cool meat). It also has a lifetime warranty and little extras like light colored pockets so you can actually see your gear in the pack instead of trying to find a black flashlight in a black pocket (not a big deal but if they put that much thought into the inside color of the pack). I'm taking it on a scouting trip this weekend and will let you all know how it works out, minus the meat part.

DEERSLAM replied to firstcoueswas80's topic in Rifle hunting for Coues Deer
New Swaros 10x42ELs, I'll be buying an Eberlestock Justone backpack and a few other small items. I've already got so much gear (I'm a serious GEAR JUNKIE) there are very few things I really need and I'm saving my money for a Caribou hunt in the North West Territories next year. Of course if you all run across some really sweet gear please let us know. -
My deal is where you going to put your deer or elk quarter. I like to hunt away from the crowds. Example, on my last coues hunt I had my masterguide pack with all my gear. After I got my buck I had to take my pack and rifle down the mountain drop them off in the brush (wouldn't you know it when I got back up the mountain I looked back and saw a group of 7 illegals walk within 20yds of my stuff, but thats a different story and a lesson learnd) walk all the way back up throw the deer over my shoulders and walk all the way back. Dragging the deer wasn't much of an option with all the various cacti. Bottom line is I'm looking for a pack to get me to a spot to spend most of the day and get my game or part of it back with me. If I'm going to still hunt or move often I use a fannypack as I don't want anything in the way if I have to shoulder my gun quickly. I appreciate everyones input so far, thanks all.

I've seen does chase yotes and have even seen them tree bobcats but I've never seen a buck do these things. Interesting, I've never thought about that until now.

I got my wife, my 2 boys and a couple of their friends and I'm looking for more victims!

Yes, the J104. I think this is a pretty sweet pack. Not overly big, but plenty of room for tripod/spotting scope, water bottles or water bladder, raingear and extra clothing and food for the day and other essentials. I also like that it gets your gun out of your hands while walking in while it's dark and walking back out. Also makes it easier to glass. Then it can expand to carry your game out!

Thanks Keith!

Went scouting this past weekend to checkout a unit I was drawn for this Oct. in my home state. Haven't been there in about 20 years and my uncle, who was also drawn, hasn't been there in about 5 or 6 years. Well long story short- closed gates, no trespassing, no hunting, access to favorite old hunting grounds blocked by private landowners in between National forest and BLM. What a bummer. The good news, I've got all of Aug. and Sept. to get it figured out. I've already talked to the local Biologist and have got the names of landowners, ordered updated maps and talked to some oldtimers from the area. Planning another scouting trip for Aug. and with new knowledge things should go much better. Moral of the story, if you have never been there or it's been awhile, CHECK IT OUT NOW!! Mike

TONS of Elk Photots
DEERSLAM replied to BASS's topic in Photography of Coues Deer and Other Wildlife
BASS, greats pics. The bear looks to be 3 1/2 at most, maybe 175lb. -
I also talked to NM game and fish last week. They said I should be getting my PERMIT very soon and that when I receive it I can then buy my nonresident deer LICENSE at any vendor. Hopefully we can also buy these online. Mike
