SunDevil, What unit were you scouting? I'll be hunting NM come Nov.

Travis, You're right on the money about how our different deer use their senses in different order as their main defence against predators. That said, I'd have to say that coues deer are going to use their sight above their sense of smell due to the habitat in which they live. And what about those big ears on a coues deer? Could it be they use their sense of smell last. I don't know, but it seems to me that maybe coues have the best of both worlds in between muleys and eastern whitetail PS notice I don't use the word carp

Pending P&Y World Record Typical Elk

Pope & Young have categories for both hard horn and velvet. Both are scored the same. For B&C the velvet would have to be removed. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> That is true but P&Y do not have any velvet catagoy world records. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> This is true. Also velvet bucks are dropped when the next hard bound copy of the P&Y records is released, though the are still kept in the P&Y archives. -
Wow, what a monster Did it look like the bulls killed each other fighting?

wklman, I'm quoteing the so called experts who say a muley is the hardest critter to put in the book these days. I myself am not taking this to serious, just getting others take on this subject. Makes for fun reading what people think of our deer

I think the point sticking out on the left side of the live bull is because of the angle. Look close at the brow tines on both bulls, identical -
Well I like Ernestos' answer the best. Sorta makes sense them feeding in the lower elevations were most of you hunt. Keith, I don't think anyone is trying to be politicaly correct and I don't think there is any bickering going on. Just trying to figure out were the term carp came from. az4life, I have seen a number of good deer of all species, yes coues deer also, taken from the road. It took me about 20yrs before I got my first big muley. Took me 1 hunt to get a booner coues. Things like this happen, like 5yearcoueshunters friend on that antelope hunt. Consensus is that a big muley is the hardest big game animal to take in North America these days. Me personally, my favorite big game animal is the next critter I'm huntin or can draw a tag for

long long distance shooting
DEERSLAM replied to muledeerarea33?'s topic in Rifle hunting for Coues Deer
Ernesto, You speak the truth brother If you are going to shoot long distance, say over 350yds, use enough gun on big game. I'd say .270 cal and up with a well constructed bullet on our deer species. That .243 is a heck of a deer caliber but when taking a long shot cross canyon you can't always tell what the wind is going to do to that little bullet at 400,500 or 600yds. I know alot of guys who shoot lighter bullets for more speed and flatter trajectory. I choose to shoot a little heavier 160gr bullet in my 7mmstw because it bucks the wind better and hits harder. I also wonder for every long shot the kills how many wound Bottom line is practice, practice and practice and use the right tool for the job. -

Grey fox and bobcat. I believe an adult bobcat is generaly going to be bigger than a grey fox. I've called in a number of both and the bobcats have always been bigger. -

Awsome bull! Again, $$$$ I think azhuntnut's bull is a better "trophy", public land, regular guy, like most of us, drew the tag scouted hard made it happen his self, etc. Just my take on it -

Need input on what you'd score this
DEERSLAM replied to coues7's topic in Photography of Coues Deer and Other Wildlife
I'd shoot him in say, 10 seconds -
Nice pics of the bear. That big old buck is probable just holed up some where near. When they get that big and old they are like a different species than them young bucks. Patience and good luck and your tag will hang on that toad

bullwidgeon, Thats a pretty dang nice bull, congrats.

long long distance shooting

You guys make good points. Wade, I agree, I like to get as close as I can, It's part of the hunt Casey, I also agree with you. I have a custom built 7mmstw that is pushing a hand loaded 160gr bullet at 3400fps. It was built just for those long cross canyon shots and with practice and hours at the loading bench it will shoot a .325" group at 100yds. It gives me the confidence to make long shots on game. That said, I still have not taken a shot on a big game animal at over 300yds, haven't had to. -

Casey, You should shoot targets that are farther than 350yds to build confidence in longer shots on game and to know where your rifle is hitting at those ranges.
