That thing is a TOAD! What do you think he'll score -
On my caribou hunt in the Northwest Territories coming up in Sept. it will cost an extra $100.00 for each set of antlers that are unsplit. And that's just to get them back to Yellowknife. Not sure what it's going to cost to get em all they way home. If they don't make book they are getting split for sure. I'll just have to take some measurements for the taxi.

Unbelievable Dept. Mess UP!!!
DEERSLAM replied to azcamohead's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
That's true theoretically. On a practical level, though - you can apply for every species, but the chances of getting drawn for every species are pretty much nil. Anyway, I'm done with this subject. It's divisive, and pointless muskrat, I couldn't have said better. What are the odds. I'm done here also. -
Welcome mythunter to your number 1 resource for Coues deer and Coues deer hunting I'm sure some of the fine folks here can give you some insite and possibly a few starting points. You've drawn a great tag for your first Coues deer hunt and I wish you the best.

Unbelievable Dept. Mess UP!!!

If you cant afford to pay high NR tags, then i dont know what to tell you! Im not saying your not a devoted hunter, but like the guy above said hes not rich at all but he knows how to budget for his hunting! That is pretty much the same boat im in...all i have to do is budget! Im not talking about jacking the prices sky high, but i know one thing, i would most certainly be willing to pay more money for out top of the line hunts! Now your telling me I need to learn how to budget my money! NR license-$133.50 NR deer-$130.50 NR elk-$405.00 NR lope-$330.00 NR sheep-$1005.00 Total NR fees=$2004.00 I don't know to many people like me( married, two young boys, mortgage, etc.) that have that much cash lying around that they can just send it to the G&F for a few months. It will get even worse with the proposed fee increases. It would be a shame if my boys never get to hunt the awesome state of AZ. The online apps. are the only way we can afford to apply in AZ. -
What is the farthest you would shoot a .270 at elk??

Both are a better choice for elk. -

Thanks Michael for sticking up for NR's' 10% ain't all that many tags. AP15, Isn't 90% of YOUR TAGS enough. Wouldn't be a shame if we were all only allowed to hunt in OUR own states and never get to experience the Rocky Mtns of Colorado or the Missouri River Breaks of Montana or the Wind River Range of Wyoming or the Bob Marshall Wilderness of Idaho. trufletch, your right on the money. peckl1, I've done alot of out of state hunts and pick up more crap on the mountain left by the residents than I care to talk about. azcamohead, I can't afford to send all those high NR tags fees up front. How in the world does that mean I'm not devoted. I love to hunt as much as anyone on the moutain and devote as much time as I can afford to my obsession. -

When we cannot be out in the field, I guess we spend our free time here on the board! Not a bad trade in this hot summer! Exactly, I am pretty much obsessed with hunting but don't get to spend nearly enough time in the outdoors. I'm also a certified gear freak I love talking about all the newest and best gear. I enjoy all the great info I get from all of you great folks here at CouesWhitetail.com. God Bless -

DEERSLAM replied to drgonzales's topic in Rifle hunting for Coues Deer
I agree with Bill and eyeguards, keep it under 400yds. Use a well consructed bullet and don't take marginal shots. Bullet placement is everything but at 400yds I would be reluctant to take a quartering towards me shot for example. -
Jim, I paid $199 for mine at Bass Pro. The new pattern in Advantage Max 1 Open Country, (Bill Jordan-Realtree) wish they had that pattern available when I got mine. As a matter of fact was just talking to a bud of mine who drew a 36b Dec. tag and told him he has got to pick up a Just One pack for his hunt. I think Eberlestock should put me on their Pro Staff the way I keep promoting their packs

Depending on the rifle and how old it is the .270 was pretty much built for the 130gr bullet. 140gr and 150's are relatively new bullets for the .270. Rate of twist is going to determine how well the heavier bullets shoot out of a specific rifle. Lark correct me if I'm wrong. I have shot elk with 130gr Nosler partitions but given a choice if I were to hunt elk again with my .270 I would chose a heavier bullet. Moose, most definintly a heavier bullet.

Summer camo - NON-COTTON!
DEERSLAM replied to DesertBull's topic in Miscellaneous Items related to Coues Deer
I have found UA in light brown and a sage type color. I wear them cause I won't buy those dark camos like realtree and mossyoak breakup, especially for $10 more for the camo. Cabelas Microtex is an awesome fabric that I have been very happy with and is very versatile. I wear the outfitter camo pattern. -
Summer camo - NON-COTTON!
DEERSLAM replied to DesertBull's topic in Miscellaneous Items related to Coues Deer
I believe you are talking about Natural Gear camo. Walmart has a number of garments in that pattern. Works great in desert type areas. Cabelas does have Under Armor in camo now, Realtree I believe. I've only used their Cold Gear and found it works pretty well. -
If you are doing day hunts or even 2 or 3 day hunts the Eberlestock Just One is hard to beat. Plenty of room for your tripod, spotter, 15's, food and gear. Also has a place for your water bladder. The backscabbard is an awesome feature. Best of all when you knock down that big Coues buck you have room to haul him out with one trip. If you are looking for a bigger pack for some extended trips into the mountains the Kifaru LongHunter is an awesome pack. Tons of room and features and the Gunbearer is nice to get the rifle out of your hands in tough terrain.
-
Jim are you going to be using factory loads or reloading. Either way I would go with the 150gr bullet. The Nosler partition is a great choice or any other well constructed bullet. I would stay away from the Nosler Ballistic tip. The Nosler Accubond might be a happy medium.

They look to be in great shape. Thanks for the great pics Doug -
That's a great letter switchback, thanks for sharing. Let us know what kind of a response she gets from G&F.

80% of the tags should go to the hunters with the most points while the remaining 20% would go into a random drawing for all the remaining applicants. If you draw a "premium hunt" for a certain species you would be required to sit out of the draw for that species for 2 years. My .02 I also believe there are some shady things going on in most game and fish dept. as far as the draws go. For some reason some high profile type hunters seem to always draw some big time hunts every year against huge odds As far as online apps, cash up front would be very tough for most nonresidents and I don't believe game and fish dept. would want to lose all of that revenue. And yes I know it's your state but we are all nonresidents somewhere and if your like me I like to hunt species other than just the ones in my state.

Looks awesome. Were you able to walk out of there without dropping a couple of hundred $ ?

Just bought some new coyote medicine yesterday, Savage 12FV in .204 Ruger. Anyone out there shootin the .204? Looks to be a great cal. for anything up to yote size up to maybe 300yds. Probably going to try the 40gr. bullet. Any input is appreciated.

Well got her back the other day and got her put back together. I decided not to get the scope camoed, just in case I decide to put it on another rifle sometime in the future. I was thinking of camo tapeing the scope, I have some high quality tape in the same Natural Gear pattern. What do you all think about the scope?

As said before you can't go wrong with either the SLC or EL. I have two SLC's and an El and love them all. Ergonomically speaking the EL's just feel better while hand held glassing and are slightly brighter. As far as the Outdoorsman's tripod, I wish I had spent the money and bought it first instead of wasting money on inferior tripods that are now collecting dust. It's a great setup.

Stanley, How can someone who has always been a mule deer hunter refer to them as "carp"? I know it's coues deer hunter slang but I will never get used to it or use it. No offense
