    Unit 23 New Mexico

I wanted to give an update since it seems nobody ever does after asking for help on a hunt. Anyways, I didn’t kill a coues. Saw a lot of mulies, a lot of elk. Was relieved and a bit surprised I only saw hunters on the road. While I was out hiking and glassing I didn’t see anybody. If I was to do this again, I would spend more time north and I would hunt bears with the idea that I’d shoot a deer if I happen to get a chance.
  3. Kind of a useless post, Im trying to do a little on line cyber snooping to pick up some useful info on coues in 23. I got this as a 4 th choice. Its the only tag I got this year. When I put in 4th choice s.w. quadrant, for some reason, coues never even crossed my mind. I thought I'd wind up with a 21 or 23 September mule deer tag. Gotta be honest, those little deer are just not my cup of tea and I wish I could be a little more excited. Oh well, if anybody wants to drop a little info for me I'll take it cause I'm not seeing a lot online. Plan right now is to just try and find some water holes on OnX and mark them. Maybe one weekend scouting trip. Thanks.
  4. Is 29 one of the units no longer otc?

    Unit 23 New Mexico

Appreciate that, thank you. I’ve spent a good chunk of time today marking water sources in the area you mentioned. Good to know I might in the ball park. you have experience here in this area I assume, what’s the mt. lion population like. I’d guess they’re pretty thick?

The people that say they’ve got the hunt, ask for spots then never come back and say how it went.

    NM Unit 27

If I draw this next year I’m going to keep this post in mind. You put in for this every year?

    New Mexico Unit 21 tag

I had the January tag. Supposed to be hunting right now. Instead, I’m sitting nursing a herniated disk and Covid. I’m so depressed.

    They never come back.
  16. I'll try and make this short. I did a search on this and didn't get anything. I live in NM, I used to hunt a couple of the border units had an issue one night and haven't been back. I love desert mule deer hunting. Tags here in NM are hard to draw now, 3rd year with no January tag. So, I'm looking at Arizona as a possible place to hunt in January when I don't get drawn here. Are there any desert units that don't have the problems with the illegal traffic, drug runners and garbage, people rummaging through your stuff at night, shooting...etc? Looking to be able to camp and not use hotels. Not really asking for specific areas just units in general. Any advice appreciated. Thank you.
  17. Is there still a annual clean up event in the border area?
  18. Very sad to see. Some years back it seems I remember a crackdown on border crossings around Tucson. m saw a major rise in crossings here. We have areas like that on our border as well. I don’t think it covers as much ground as it does in AZ though. My last hunt down there, the day after having gunshots go off in camp at 2am, I saw some deer enter a stand of some kind of brush/trees. REALLY thick stuff about 10’ tall. This stuff was located on public land right next to some kind of green, irrigated private land and a couple of ranch houses. That spot was obviously being used as a hideout for illegals. I had to wonder what it would be like to have all that activity basically in your back yard.
  19. Thanks, I’ll take a look at 27, see if it’s OTC.
  20. Appreciate the responses. I know the topic of non res. In AZ is not a popular topic. I get it. If I want to know what it’s like to hunt the Gila I have to watch dudes from Ohio do it on YouTube. next year, if I’m feeling rich I may hunt somewhere in 36 and stay in a hotel. However, I hate that so, I’m looking a little bit at 24a.
  21. Drew this tag for only the 2nd time in 13 years. Very excited. For those that spend a fair amount of time in this part of 23, how is the deer herd doing? Are the numbers still fair? Hows the quality of bucks? January is a long ways off but I'm glad I have this hunt to look forward to.

    AZ Muley Country

Geez, doing a search on muley hunting in AZ, come across all this. See the original poster is banned. Wish I had caught all the drama earlier. Would be a good way to pass some time at work.
  24. Yep, sorry guys but I've got to do it. Believe it or not I hate asking these types of questions but I've got to start getting some info. Before I go further, I'm just looking for a unit and really nothing more unless you guys feel like being generous. I live in NM and love hunting desert mulies in January. I draw every year for a unit thats not all that great on deer population but at least I get to get out and hunt. Problem is, the January hunt time frame really sucks for my wife as far as work and taking care of our son goes. Arizona's late season starts in December and thats better because she's off work for two weeks in December and I can go during this time and make things alot easier. So, now I'm starting my research for next years hunt since I've already got the NM tag for this year. I'll be scouring maps, the AZ game and fish website and the internet for any clues I can pick up. I'm looking for some desert country with lots of public land, probably stay about 10 days and for the first year just take my tent until I get the lay of the land and be mobile before I try bringing my travel trailer down there in the future. Any help or advice is appreciated. Thank you.
