Yep, sorry guys but I've got to do it. Believe it or not I hate asking these types of questions but I've got to start getting some info. Before I go further, I'm just looking for a unit and really nothing more unless you guys feel like being generous. I live in NM and love hunting desert mulies in January. I draw every year for a unit thats not all that great on deer population but at least I get to get out and hunt. Problem is, the January hunt time frame really sucks for my wife as far as work and taking care of our son goes. Arizona's late season starts in December and thats better because she's off work for two weeks in December and I can go during this time and make things alot easier. So, now I'm starting my research for next years hunt since I've already got the NM tag for this year. I'll be scouring maps, the AZ game and fish website and the internet for any clues I can pick up. I'm looking for some desert country with lots of public land, probably stay about 10 days and for the first year just take my tent until I get the lay of the land and be mobile before I try bringing my travel trailer down there in the future. Any help or advice is appreciated. Thank you.

I didn't know about the water catchment book, thats a great tip. Thanks. I looked at AZ website for the 3 units listed above. All 3 emphasize the declining mule deer population and hunter crowding due to proximity of the city. Unit 21 has no Dec. hunt according to the website. All units have high Mt. Lion densities. Hmm. AC GUY, have you hunted these units personally?

Hello. Thinking of trying some desert country mule deer hunting in late 2010. Wondering the earliest time the rut kicks in for mulies in AZ? I know this can vary greatly from year to year and even unit to unit but I'm looking for generalities. I've heard that some rut activity can be expected as early as December. How accurate is this? I'm just now starting my planning so I don't even know what unit yet. If anybody has a suggestion for that as well I'm all ears. Thanks.

Good story. I've come across several lions the last couple of years. I only followed one, a very large one, that showed NO fear of me at all. I followed him because I intended to put an arrow into him. I lost him in a canyon and started to feel pretty skittish so I backed out and hunted somewhere else. Other than that, if I know theres a lion in the area, I'm going the opposite direction! Definately wouldn't have gone looking for her like you did.

You guys DO NOT want this to happen. This is the way the New Mexico Game and Fish runs things and it has DRASTICALLY hurt the big game populations in NM. Especially mule deer. The biologists are there for a reason, got to listen to them.

I am planning on going out to hunt deer and possibly javelina in January of this year in 36A,B,C. Just how bad are these units as far as the border jumpers and drug dealers? I read the thread about the guy being murdered in 34. I want to know if it's even worth it. Give me some advice and experiences.

#1 just me talking here, but I personally would never park right next to a guy and get out and start blasting. Especially when you know the seasons are overlapping. When somebody beats me to a spot I just go somewhere else. Thats good for both parties. #2 I've never understood the no firearm during archery season thing. If we have the "right to bear arms" how can it be illegal? I know the obvious, but it still doesn't make sense. I can't shoot a pistol for crap, there's no way I'd attempt to shoot anything outside of 5 yards with a pistol. There's no way I'd try to cap a deer or elk that was out of bowrange. #3 Arizona is starting to sound pretty spooky. Illegals and drug runners galore, dudes blasting away uphill without knowing whats around. dang.

I called BLM to get land status maps for the mentioned units. The lady said she could not help. She said she had a big map that I could look at and then tell her which map I needed. I am in NM and can't look at her "big map". Can somebody please tell me what maps I would need to order from them to cover these units? Thank you.

Yea, I did the same thing. Problem was the units I wanted, for some reason, were not covered under any of the Forest Service maps.

Interesting article. New Fences are not the solution. Drastic measurers need to be taken. The Mexican Government should somehow be held accountable for the situation that causes these people to come into our country. As far as the illegals themselves, they should be treated like problem bears but with fewer chances. Once caught tag them. Second offence put em in cages and transfer them to Argentina or Brazil.

I got one for unit 13. I don't know why I keep getting tags for this unit, for some reason I just think one of these days it'll cough up a big one for me.

I found what I was looking for on the BLM website. I saw the lady's "big map" and it is overlayed with the hunting units. She obviously just did not want to get out of her dang chair and look. Lazy. Man I hate that. I am going to look into some of these other map sources people have mentioned. Thank you.
