Late Rifle Bull Unit 10 - First Hunt in AZ
AZ_SAWBUCK replied to AZontheRocks's topic in Elk Hunting
a few years back there were lots of campers stuck in the snow on those late hunts...............I'm sure you remember! Plan accordingly.......could be dry could be snow but I guarantee it will be cold. -
Can you elaborate more. I'm thinking of getting something that links to WiFi..

Lots of good suggestions. Speaking from experience in backcountry wilderness elk hunting............Killed several bulls and bucks way back in there. Usually we use horses but have done it without. -Odds are you are going to have to pack meat at least .5 miles ++ to a trail or road. -Usually wilderness areas are mostly flat.....train accordingly - Scout areas if you can.....27 has lots of water if you know where to look. - Pack as lite as you can. Aaron Snyder has some great gear videos on You Tube....The Kuiu guys did some great lite gear videos for BC sheep that would apply. -Pack.....GO BIG....Kuiu 7200 (or similar with ridged frame) -Hire a packer or have multiple backpackers to help if you get one down. A few hundred bucks is $$ well spent if you can have a drop camp set and recovered when you're ready. -Service in remote area sucks, use a SPOT or a Sat Phone or have some way to call out if you kill.

Love hearing your success and failures. Congratulations to everyone who tagged out and had a great year. To those who didn’t have a stellar year…… keep at it and chin up, 2022 will be great if you have the right outlook. 2021: Made some major lifestyle changes! Got my health and fitness on track. Started valuing my time and holding my life to a higher standard. Completed 75 HARD that helped forge new daily habits and mindset. Lost 45 LBs. Killed a cow elk with my bow. Built better relationships with my kids! Promotion at work. And Kicked an addiction that wasn’t serving me anymore. 2022 is going to be even better. Live like there’s no tomorrow!!

Super Good Guy, He gave me a bunch of free hunting T shirts years back when I first joined the site. Actually he may have been the first person I meet from the site. I could tell he was a class act and genuinely cared about the hunting community. RIP Mike C U on the other side My Friend.

Don't Quit. Overall hunts have been tougher this year. DRY, COVID, Too many tags issued........just a bad deal....But hey YOU have a TAG! That's AWSOME make the best of it. Think outside of the norm for places to look and go shoot a buck. One thing that's always helped me, with any mission or adventure is to have the mindset of working harder than anyone to get it done. If you do this, at the end of the day you cant say you failed!

I'm guessing no left overs......First year in a decade that I didn't draw a January archery javi tag..................super sad........... my third choice had 1200 tags I figured I at least get that one. I was wrong. Times have changed.......sad time for AZ residents.................NO more leftovers #thenewcalifornia

Tough go here...the cold ain't too fun for AZ natives. The older I get less fun it is to endure and I'm only 38. Only other thing that's not mentioned is to MOVE.... get that blood moving...walk in place, pushups, arm circles...... not the easiest solution but it should work......practice these moves before you go and it'll be easier to make yourself do on the MTN. Good luck on the hunt!

Unit 22 questions (not hunting spots)
AZ_SAWBUCK replied to northAZarcher's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
Main road through the unit is SR 87 its in pretty good shape with the exception of patch jobs that ADOT has attempted to repair. Remember to drive slow in the fast lane so you hold up all the weekend warriors in diesel truck that are burning coal trying to beat all the yuppies to THE SPOT! If you are lucky enough to draw a rat tag proceed with caution. They have been known to be highly addictive to hunt with a bow. As for Honey holes.....they are all ruined by social media and YouTube influence. Highly likely to see floods of trucks with license plates from UT, Nevada and California. if I were you I'd stay away from Bushnell, Mount Ord, areas around Rye, south of Roosevelt Lake, the 4 peaks road and roads west of Pine and Strawberry, Mesquite and Sycamore washes. If you want a real quality experience chasing deer,...........get on a side by side and get away from people don't be lazy......walk into areas that aren't pressured you'll be glad you did. Just FYI 22 and other central units aren't what they were 5-10 years ago........overall game population is not what is used to be. IMO. Good Luck! -
I'll take em! PM inbound

Flying with a large hunting backpack? How do you do it?
AZ_SAWBUCK replied to Viper's topic in The Campfire
I just got back last week from Idaho. Helped a friend on a sheep hunt in the Bruneau wilderness! I took my 5200 as a carry on with a few things in it. Important optics, emergency kit, book, some food and one change of clothes. I checked all my other backpacking gear in a roller duffel. Its not a big deal. Just use common sense and don't try to carry on obvious stuff like stove fuel cans, trekking poles and knives and ammo. I've flown ALOT, never had SW Air loose a checked bag. (Had Spirit loose one tho). Good luck on the Sheep Hunt hope you find a good ram. on another note TSA is a joke these days. They have some real winners working the checkpoints. Last time I flew I felt like I was going through security at a county jail.
