I want to believe you're wrong but I think you're right and have to face the reality that hunting elk in AZ isn't going to happen for me this year. Maybe I'll head to Colorado or Montana for an archery hunt.

My understanding is that you only pay the junior tag price if you apply for nothing but junior hunts. Once you put in for general hunts, the tag price goes up to full regardless. At least that's the way it used to be, IIRC. Congrats on the tags in any case. At least two in your family are hunting elk, which means you all have a great excuse to be out in the elk woods this year.

Thanks, Rat! Much appreciated. I figured someone would jump on this rifle faster than a rat on a cheeto. Coues 'n' Sheep, thanks for the offer and I'd consider it but leaning toward not growing my rifle collection any right now - guns won't all fit in the cabinet as it is. My youngest wants to shoot a bow and now my oldest is leaning that direction, too. I've already got a 7mm from my dad, though I prefer my two 30.06's. If I get another rifle it probably won't be until after I fund at least one more bow and it will likely be a 7mm-08, which is what I was hoping to win at the banquet.

It seems like everyone on this board but me drew an elk tag. I'm sure someone needs a solid elk rifle for this fall.

I'm glad it's just a thread and not a rope. Otherwise, we might see lots of dangling feet. And mine might be two of them.

They call from a number that shows as "IRS" so they don't have to actually speak directly with anyone and can just get on to the next card.

I hope she's correct but think they're just managing expectations and that they're most of the way done hitting cards. Looks like I'll be applying for Colorado, with a CO OTC, ID OTC or Montana leftover as my back up plan. I forgot and missed the stinking NM app period by 10 minutes.

Congrats on a fine cow. You're gonna kill a whole bunch of elk in your lifetime with the good attitude you've got.

Why don't you buy your dad a fishing pole and put the extra 8 bucks to use? Or continue griping about something that other states ding Arizonans for all the time. Fees are a relative bargain in this state and it's a pretty challenging place to manage wildlife if you haven't noticed. Sportsmen are going to have to keep funding the things they love - more than we are now - if we want to keep them from being put under the knife by people who don't give a dang about hunting and fishing. Just my 2¢, but I'll kick it in to help offset the (less than 2%) price bump in your dad's license fee increase.

I was in Unit 22 near the Deer Creek trailhead (near where Hwy 188 meets the 87) looking for pigalinas this week and saw elk poop and a couple of rubs. It gets pretty warm in that area during the late spring and summer, so I was pretty surprised.

Awesome bull but we do need a story to go with it. Best of luck topping that old boy - he's a whopper!

Great job using the recurves - my youngest wants me to get him one and I know jack squat about them. Field pic is very well done too.

Congrats to those who have tagged out this year! Still looking for my first pigalina kill. Have been out twice in 22 and gotten into them both times but haven't gotten a shot - too much brush and pigs busting out of there. The J13 call has only turned a couple around - never brought them in - but sent most of them running the other way as fast as their piggly little legs could carry them.

Congrats to you both. It sounds like a fun, adventurous hunt - even if you had to earn your piggy with some catclaw scratches. Glad the meat was still good and I like the idea of grinding sausage out of all of it. That's way above my pay grade, though. I'll be lucky to even find any pigs when I finally get out on Tuesday - hoping to arrow my first one ever.

That's just a great job by all 3 generations - congrats to your son for making a great shot and his attitude of wanting to stay in the woods beyond the hunt; to you for getting him going at such a young age and on bulls, which probably helps that attitude a bunch; and your dad looks like he's pretty fit to be chasing high country elk in November/December. Well done!

Great buck and an even better archery buck! Good job working to get in front of them. Looks about the same size as the mulie I was chasing this Friday in a different unit. Was hoping I could get in front of him and his does - I don't know if I was too noisy or what but when I peeked over the ridge to see if they were still coming down their ridge, all I saw were butts trotting out of there. Got on them 2 more times, but could never close the distance for a shot. Don't know if I'll have a chance to get back out there this year and January has me in a different unit chasing pigs. Have killed a bull with my bow but passed on a couple small bucks and never tagged an archery buck, yet!
