    Tips for a teen?

I wish I wasn't headed back to Northern California, I for sure would have shown you some amazing country for some awesome hunting but someone suggested to hunt rabbits n squirrel to start you off. That is exactly what I did, I hunted everything you could imagine on my families ranch in Florence, quail, dove, rattlesnakes. They make for a small target and they don't evade like deer do. Javelina isn't bad either, in the off season I could have kicked a few that's how close they were and they didn't run off like deer would.

    Finally heading out

Good luck to you both. What unit do you plan on hunting. I had great success in 37A a couple years ago, also saw some nice bucks. I will be in that unit next week.

    Is the rut here?

I have been out in Northern 23 that past couple of days and all I've seen is 15 plus doe and a couple fawn, no bucks at all. I have tried scent, and rattling and nothing either. Trail cam picked up a nice little buck at 1 AM, still snow on the ground and there are siqn everywhere, still not spooking anything up.

    Question about Gambel's Quail

Yes quail taste good and yes they are in season. Try using small gauge shot since most the time you will be taking close shots if no small gauge and only a 12 then drag out your shot. I've incinerated quail when taking too close with a 12 & 16

    How good does Javelina taste

Took mine to Four Peaks and had them make the pepper and teriyaki sticks, man that was dang good. I would cut the up and add to my eggs in the morning and were awesome. They work great for hiking and hunting snacks as well. Though, I do not think I will do that again since it was about $75 bucks and that is pretty much all they had to offer. I will surely cut it up myself next time for the crock pot and jerky.

Anyone planning a bowhunt up north in January?

Not way north but I will be hunting 23 just east of Kohls Ranch. I always see bucks but it can be hard to get a clean shot through the brush if you are not using a stand.
