Thanks guys. It was a boar. Probably had another year to be full sized. But it was an average sized pig.

My brothers have shot several javelina with our 30-06. Just don't aim for the shoulder or you'll ruin all the meat. Center of mass will knock those little things down and not ruin the meat.

Wow that's awesome!

Let's hear your "Zombie-dove" stories
rschaumb replied to Scooter's topic in Small Game, Upland Bird, and Waterfowl Hunting
Well not really Zombie ish, but one time my dog grabbed the bird and was bringing it to me and it was still flapping so she kept a death grip on it and chewed it a bit too much. The heart fell out of the bird and when I picked it up off the ground it was still beating. I have also left a bird in the game bag after the hunt and realized the awfull smell days later. -
I talked with a lady at game and fish and she mentioned two things, but said nothing's set in stone yet. You would just need a valid license to apply for a hunt and a valid license during your hunt. And you will probably be able to tell them what day you want your 365 to start on. Just not sure how far in advance you can do that. So you have your 2014 license that expires at the end of December. When putting in for the Spring hunts you will probably be able to use your current license to apply for the hunts. Then just before Jan 1 you'd need to buy a license and have it start on Jan 1. That's the only way that is going to make sense with this structure. And the lady said they'd cross that hurdle when it came. Not sure why they wouldn't have it all figured out before they came up with this structure but it is what it is.

Has anyone used the QAD Exodus broadheads. They look pretty good. They have the barbed and non-barbed versions. They are shorter than most broadheads which they say is to keep the center of gravity on the arrow the same so they should shoot the same as field points. Has anyone used them before? I shoot and have only shot the Ramcat broadheads. Killed two pigs and one deer in my first two years of bow hunting. The Exodus' just look like the blades would be stronger than the ramcat, which has pretty thin blades that can bend a little. Thanks for your input.

Are these the same bears...Bear growth
rschaumb replied to rschaumb's topic in Black Bear or Grizzly Bear hunts
Ok thanks. Good to know. That's what I was thinking. So now there are at least 4 bears in the area, one brown one. Only I only see one once a month about. -
This is a bear from last year. And here is a video. https://picasaweb.google.com/ISPYRYAN89/Scouting#5772499269115957426 Then this is from this year. Could it be the same one or would it have grown more than this? And the video https://picasaweb.google.com/ISPYRYAN89/Scouting#5886530335117659442 What do you guys think? Thanks for your input.

Neat color phase bear. It shows up after 14 seconds. He moved the camera in the beginning. This camera takes a picture then records the video. I almost deleted it until I saw the video. Even a 3-6 maybe even 9 burst image sequence might have missed him. I do like that feature about this camera. The Moultrie M-80. I also have the newer M-880 but they removed that feature. Not sure why or why you can't select between both options. https://picasaweb.google.com/ISPYRYAN89/Scouting#5901076735436536418

With only 4 bonus points total you would have had no chance of getting either of those december tags in the bonus pass. So you must have gotten it in the 1st and 2nd round.
-
For the elk draw my card got hit the day after they said they needed updated credit cards. And I got the 9th tag for a cow elk archery hunt, which was in the bonus pass round. So I think they will hit cards in the order of the draw process...Bonus pass, 1st and 2nd pass and then 3rd through 5th pass.

The buck in my avatar is 96 gross and 92 net. I would think that buck would be over a hundred.

Wireless trail camera question....prior to opener.
rschaumb replied to Bitter24's topic in Rifle hunting for Coues Deer
In the 13-14 Hunting regs, pg 96-98, it talks about National Wildlife Refuges, Wilderness Areas, BLM and NPS. In National Wildlife Refuges (listed pg 96) it says "3. Pits, permanent blinds and stands; trail or scouting cameras; and baiting are prohibited." Under Wilderness Areas it only mentions no motorized travel allowed. Under BLM it says the areas listed are open for hunting but the BLM and NPS lands within Grand Canyon - Parashant National Monument are open to hunting but some "NPS regulations differ from those of the BLM. These are...5. Shed antlers may not be collected or possessed while on NPS lands. 7. Feeding or baiting of wildlife is prohibited. 9. Property (including game cameras) cannot be left unatteneded longer than 24 hrs"...etc. It sounds to me like there is no over arching rule against game cams except for in the two mentioned areas. If it was illegal in wilderness areas it should be listed there under Wilderness Areas like it is specifically listed and banned under the National Wildlife Refuges and The Grand Canyon-Parashant National Monument sections. That's my interpretation at least. -
Wasn't getting responses in the Trail Cam set up pinned topic so I'll post it here. In the forest it's easy to mount a trail cam but I've had issues in the desert where there aren't trees with trunks to really strap it to. I've tried a small tripod and just sat it on the ground and piled up rocks/dirt/grass around the base to keep it steady and camouflage it. I've also taken out metal rods and hammered them in the ground to strap it to but they were a little shaky in the wind. Any advice from you desert hunters? Also there's not much to strap/lock them to out there either. I've just tried to hide it and put them where I don't think people hike much. Thanks for your input.

What are the behavior and locations of deer during the august archery season in the desert in comparison to the early rifle hunts? It seems like it'd be too hot for them to be moving around and feeding during the day like deer do in the forest that time of year. Do people usually hunt water or do they move enough that you can glass and spot and stalk? Thanks for your input. I just haven't been out before in the desert that time of year.

big one following 3 minutes behind. Do you think it's a mom and older cub? or Boar following sow? any thoughts on how big this bull and buck are going to be based on the date taken?

First archery elk tag with my brother. Either 6b bull or 6b cow. Super excited
-
So two years ago we saw this pig while scouting. This is pulled from a short video clip. Saw it again this year and almost got a shot at it before being busted by a mom and baby between us. Couple more tags in the area this year, if not next year he's going down. How rare is this. Have many people seen real light pigs before?

What were you using to take the photos and how far were you from them. Nice pics.

Hey all, I've seen these small plants in two different locations now that have small tomato looking fruits on them. About a half inch in diameter. I've seen them near Iron mountain and near Orme/Dugas. Anyone have any idea what they are. I can't find anything online unless they really are just tomatos of sorts. Thanks

It looks like it could be wolf berry/box thorn or at least similar.

I appologize in advance for the long story... I started the year out with a great bang, or shall I say a fling of an arrow. I got my first bow toward the end of last year. January 1st started with a javelina on the ground at 8 in the morning. Man was I excited. First archery kill on the first day out with my bow. The fall archery deer hunt was very exciting. Seeing deer everyday. Drawing back several times but never feeling comfortable with the shot or distance to let an arrow fly. That hunt ended with mixed emotions as I was so close yet I had seen so many great bucks and even followed a nice 4x4 and an even bigger framed 3x3 on the last day until dark. I wasn't expecting much for the December archery season until my brother was within archery range of 2 different whitetail bucks while scouting for and hunting during the rifle hunt. Then two weeks before the December hunt opened I was within archery range of two nice bucks. I though, This could happen. Friday comes and I can't wait to get out there. The temps were dropping, new moon, and I had high hopes. My brother and I get out there and it is cold, raining, hailing, foggy, and windy. All morning we only jumped one small spike. They next day came with a wedding to go to in the afternoon and I was waiting for Sunday to roll around, forcasted with mostly sunny skies, which would be a relief from the previous day. But that afternoon it was only drizzling out so I decided to run out to a closer spot where I would find some mule deer. Just before arriving to my parking area my truck got stuck in the mud. I called my brother and told him to get me out before dark, I would be out hunting. Not even 5 minutes into walking to the area I wanted to glass I jumped a buck. He ran off and stopped over a hundred yards away and just stared for a little bit before running off again. I followed him around the hill where I jumped 5 does and a fawn, which all ran off across the flats. Just then it started raining. So I got up high to try to glass for that buck, hoping he had bedded down. I finally found a deer bedded across the valley but couldn't tell if it was a buck or not. I decided it was my best shot so I planned my stalk in the hour of light left. As I got close I ranged the closest tree line I could sneak to and also the tree the deer was bedded down under: 50 yrds. I had been practicing out further than that so I was preparing myself for that being the case. I got to the tree line and saw that it was indeed a buck! Only then he started staring at me. It was getting darker by the minute so I figured it was now or never. I got down low and inched my way to the edge of the tree. I ranged him once more before coming to full draw and standing up over the jumping cactus that stood between me and him. I took my aim, made sure of my grip, and let the arrow go. I knew I release a little high and time stood still after the release. But as soon as I released, seeing as he had been watching me, he jumped up to take off running. He ran twenty yards and started walking, looking around. I didn't know if I hit him or if he just got scared from the sound of the bow...until he started catching his balance and fell over right there! I couldn't believe it. My first buck at the end of my first year with a bow. I couldn't have been happier and thanked God for a perfect shot despite my poor release. Thanks for reading. (no picture in the desert due to it being dark and only had my bad phone with me.
