I just got back from a week long hunt in Sonora. The weather was good and the hunting was great. The ranch owner was perfect and made everyone feel at home. I am used to roughing it and camping out of my tent so a ranch house with beds and shower was very welcome. The ranch had different kinds of terrain but coues could be found anywhere from the desert floor all the way to the tops of many mountains there. The first day after we arrived I set out early. I made a big hike from out in the flats to a big ridge. Sometime in the afternoon I was dropping down to cross a saddle to get to what looked like a good glassing point when I saw a deers ear move in the brush. I pulled up my rifle and when I looked through the scope I could see the g3s where longer then the g2s and looked like a good buck... SO I SHOT HIM ... That just seemed to make him want to run so I shot him 3 more times. Luckily the last shot piled him up before he could jump off the cliff he was headed to. I caped and quartered him out and loaded my pack for the long hike back. I dropped off into the next canyon and had deer flagging in front of me. I heard some rocks move below me and 40 yards down was a buck way bigger then I had just shot. I had told myself to hold out for the BIG ones but once again I had shot the first good buck I saw. I have what CHEF calls a bad case of couesenitus. Hector is a great guy to have in your camp. The whole gang of us there had a great time and got along good with each other. Well now I'm tagged out but got to go and glass and try to help the others. I was able to find a neat buck for Mike and he killed his biggest coues so far. Hector and Rocky also tagged out while I was there. Phil and Jim are still holding out and have passed on some great bucks. Justo, the ranch owner, and his son were there everyday and I can't say enough about there hospitality and great food. The only negative thing about the whole hunt was when crossing back into the USA I had to give up my cape because there were 2 ticks on it. For any of you going down and bringing back your cape please check and recheck your capes. I went over mine before I froze it and again afterwards with a fine tooth comb. I was confident it was tick free, but at the border I could plainly see the 2 ticks so the blame is on me. Here are some other pics. Good luck and good hunting to all of you. Keven

Another great time in Mexico
peloncillo replied to peloncillo's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Mexico
Hopefully Hector and Phil will get their bucks up on here soon. I would like to thank Phil and Jim for being invited on this hunt. They had everything planned out and supplies. It was a learning experiance for me and I hope to return with them to Justo's ranch. -
I'm leaving in a couple of hours. My trucks packed and ready to go. I haven't slept in a week. I just hope this year I can talk myself into letting the average bucks go and hold out for a real toad. Good luck to all.. Keven

I just got back from Mexico and had a pretty good time there. I got to spend time with Tim,Josh,Phil, and Jim and boy those guys sure know how to hunt. Thanks for helping me out. The border crossing couldn't have been any easier and I was at the ranch before noon. I didn't see as many deer on this ranch as others I have been to but there was lots of land for them to hide in. I watched my buck for almost an hour before I decided I would try to put a stalk on him. When I got to where I thought I would have a nice 200 to 250 yard shot I peeked up on the hill and the buck was gone. It was a pretty open hillside with only one draw in it. I started climbing the hill and before I got to the top the buck busted out of the draw. I got lucky and shot him on the run at about 70 yards. Keven

Party at Jim Reynolds' house!
peloncillo replied to CouesWhitetail's topic in CouesWhitetail.com Get-togethers!
Well I want to thank Jim and Susan for hosting the party. I feel more motivated and inspired for coues deer then ever before if that is possible. My brain still can't compute all that antler in one room. Great food and great people and AWESOME antlers. Thanks again. Keven -
Happy Birthday, Hope you get what you want.

Option B always because bigger is better. If I know a 110 + buck is in the area I don't care about not seeing lots of deer. I only wish I could learn to pass on the 90 to 110 class of deer. If I see one I have not yet been able to talk myself out of sending lead their way. Keven
