Whats In A Name
peloncillo replied to GameHauler's topic in Miscellaneous Items related to Coues Deer
I grew up in Douglas and the last hunt I was able to share with my father was in the Peloncillos. Keven -
I was blessed with an understanding wife and through no small sacrifice for her or the kids I was able to go on a coues hunt in Mexico. I went with Jason (Desertsheep) and had an incredible hunt. It was everything I had dreamed it would be. The border crossing at Nogales went smooth and we were on the ranch at three that afternoon. The ranch is huge and textbook coues habitat. Large grassy oak-covered canyons with some smaller rolling hills and brushy creek bottoms. The first day I saw a buck that was close to 100 inches but decided to keep looking for something bigger. I think we saw 15 bucks that day. The second day we found two big bucks over 100 inches. The first one wouldn't stay still long enough to stalk and the second one would have been mine if I would have been in better shape. The memory of that buck flagging through the brush will haunt me for a long time. The third day was cold and extremely windy. We went from glassing point to glassing point. We found small bucks and does bedded on the north slopes out of the wind. Towards evening we found a buck bedded with a doe under a ceder. I couldn't make the buck out through my scope and was moving to get a better angle when another buck came by and the bedded buck ran out to scare him off. The sun was at the wrong angle and I thought it was over but one of the bucks stopped next to a ceder. I shot him and asked Jason were he went. He said he dropped in his tracks. I think I might have shot the smaller of the two bucks but had to make a split second decision and am very happy with my buck. The fourth day was also very windy and cold and not many deer moving. I went with another hunter to help glass and right at dark we saw a huge buck running up and down the face of large mountain but it was too late to put a stalk on. The last day was the best day I think I have ever seen coues hunting. The weather was colder but no wind. I went with the father of the hunter I was with the day before and Jason. We were on my favorite glassing point before sunrise. As it got lighter deer just kept popping up. The rut was definitely on and at one time I had eight deer in my binos at the same time. I watched bucks chasing does, making scrapes and rubs, and lip curling. I helped guide Jason and his hunter to a bedded buck over the radio and got to help pack him out. That buck was a real toad with great mass and width. I hope to be able to go back and do it again some time. Keven COLD WINDY DAY MY BUCK Jason doing his thing Five hunters, Six deer

Arizona Unit 29 Help
peloncillo replied to Hatchet Jack Viking's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
Coues are all over that unit. Some areas to try on the west side are Pinery canyon, Turkey creek, or rucker canyon. On the east there is Horseshoe canyon and price canyon. Good luck to you and your dad. Keven -
Happy birthday Mike.

I really like hunting in 30A. I keep drawing 29 lately. I grew up in Douglas and have hunted around there since I was 14. Deer numbers there do flucuate quite a bit I think. I remember years when you would see over 100 mule deer does and be lucky to see 1 buck. My gunsmith is from there also and he just got back from the Nov. hunt there and he said he was into good coues bucks everyday. He also packed back in about three miles from the road though. The biggest buck I ever seen was in 30A. I know they are in there. Years ago Warner Glenn kept the lion population down. I don't know if anyone is doing it now. Keven

Sounds like you have put your time in and have earned your trophy. Congratulations, I can't wait to see the pics. Keven

I haven't been drawn yet for spring bear in Az but have hunted them elsewhere. They are very hungry. I think if you could find an area where you could glass a water source and maybe a nasty canyon side you might be lucky. I have watched a lot of bears going into stock ponds and play around in the water. I have never hunted in unit 22 so sorry I can't help you there. Keven

I'm back from my unit29 hunt and New Mexico unit24 hunt. I was able to take my six year old son with me for the opening day here in AZ. I've taken him scouting with me before but this was the first time hunting with him. We climbed a ways up a canyon and sat on a large rock outcropping and waited for daylight. We saw two does and two fawns feeding 300 yards across from us. He was totally excited and was getting me pumped up too. I did see a good white horned buck through the 15s over 1000 yards out and he wasn't sticking around. We heard a deer snort in the canyon bottom and a doe and a small fork came running out. I don't know what spooked them but I piled the little guy up at 240 yards. Andrew, my son, had never really shown much interest in hunting but now talks about it and I see him looking at my hunting magazines and he wanted to keep the antlers of our first deer together so I cut them off and he keeps it in his room. I went on to New Mexico and let me tell you that is some brushy country. I didn't even see a legal buck the three days I was there. I had a real good time hunting this year and am looking forward to hunting with my sons in the future. I was able to take the my biggest bear ever this year (20 4/16) but I'm just as proud of that liitle fork horn. Good luck to all of you still out hunting and I still have a Sonora coues in Jan. Keven

Happy birthday, Don't do anything too crazy. Keven -
Your right on track there Jack. Thats an awesome coues you took. I know I am very selfish and often wonder how my wife can put up with me. The sacrifices that her and the kids have made because I had to have Swarovski binos and tripods and time spent scouting, using my vacation days for hunting instead of taking the family out. I took my six year old son out with me for the first time and we killed a small fork horn that I never would of even considered shooting but sharing the excitement and experiance with my son made it worthwhile. He was a blast to hunt with and he could of cared less how big the antlers were. I still want to kill big bucks and dream constantly of doing so but I am also looking forward to hunting with my boys and can hopefully someday make it all up to my wife. God bless you Jack. Keven
