    Learning to cape

I'm a taxidermist in the show low area and I would be more than happy to show any one how to cape.Red rabbit is right on. you should practice on some animals that you dont intend to mount.I learned the basics skinning coyotes and fox for the fur trade.I'm sure any taxidermist would be glad to show you how.
  3. You can make two cuts next to the spine right behind the last rib and reach in to cut them out.You can strip the rib meat out without gutting. If you gut the animal you run the risk of punctureing the bladder or stomach and tainting the meat.
  4. buffhunter, you wont get any more meat by gutting your kill.

    Calling Advice

I have hunted predators for 20+ years and have killed a lot of them.I can tell from the post by JLW that he knows predators and I bet he's killed a lot of them to.You can learn a lot from what he has to say
  7. I think they should let you put it in the record book.In my eyes its no different than useing dogs for bears and lions or useing bait.

    Calling Advice

If you have the wind right and they hang up chances are the call was to loud. Most people play their e-caller way to loud.Less volume works better for me.You have to remember your trying to sound like a dieing rabbit not a dieing T-REX.Keep trying and good luck.

    Seeking Predator Calling Tips

I call all day most of the time.If the wind gets to howling I head for home.Cloudy calm days are the best but you don't get two many days like that.I agree with JLW the first and last stand are the best.I do better in the morning on coyotes and the last three stands are best for fox or bobcats.I start in the open country for coyotes and try to end my day in thicker cover for fox and cats.
  15. Great story Adam.Felt like I was right there with you.Congrats again

    meat preservation

If your going to have it mounted you need to know where to make cuts before you skin it .You should talk to your taxidermist before you go on your hunt.He should be able to show you.when we get one down we skin it right away.we skin one side, bone out that side, flip it over skin and bone out the other side.we don't even have to gut it this way.when you get back to camp its ready to pack on ice in a cooler.Hope this helps you out.
