My son knocked down his cow elk with a .243 (95 grain). That was a 125yd shot.
-
Yes, on my son's first cow hunt I struggled with this question. I spent week's researching it and looking up ballistics, range, etc. At the end of the day, my son knocked down his cow from 125 yards and she only ran 25 yards before hitting the ground. I am sure everyone in here has their opinions on ammo but we opted for a 90grain bullet and it worked great. Now, we were "lucky" in that the shot was relatively close, but I would have been comfortable on that bullet choice upto 200yds. With him, at that time, having limited range time we made the choice to stay inside of 200 on all shots. Bottomline, your .243 will work. I had the meat in the freezer to prove it. Good luck out there with the kid(s). There is no greater feeling as a parent to hunt with your kids.

This whole unit is full of elk .... there aren't too many bad spots. I am betting you fill the tag

When do you guys start shed hunting? How much do you use your optics vs. your boots?

Saw a lot more activity this weekend in my area. Finally had one of the big boys move in to kick out some of the spikes ... but let's be honest. I'm cool with a spike too. Glassed 4 or 5 bucks; drew back on spike before he decided to jump down into the wash to chase a doe .... overall good weekend.
-
I have been out 3 times since Saturday and still haven't seen the bucks sticking with does. I have seen them come into the doe herds and not sticking around the next day. Just the spikes are sticking. This warm weather can't be helping. If it's worth anything, all the "rut" activity I have seen has only been in the evenings. I'll be out all day Friday/Sat/Sun .... let's how this changes over the weekend during the rain.

130+ 3x3!!!!!!! and another deer....
BigGameHunter replied to Tines's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
*tips my cap to you gentlemen* Well done! -
Was back out this morning, down south, and found about 20 does ... no bucks pushing. Maybe these does aren't pretty enough or the bucks in the unit have ED. I may never know the answer to those questions...so I'll leave it to that to the biologist(s).

The two areas that I have been in, unit 33 and 36B, have not seem to start yet. Lots of does hanging around but no bucks in the mix (yet). Hopefully, the cold weather snaps them into the fever. I just need to find one that's half blind, can't smell, and walking with his head down through a 10 yard wide wash to make this season happen. *crosses fingers* DL

Does anyone have the youth hunt in 36B this weekend? If so, I might be able to help.

This is about the equivalent of Fred Flintstone ordering a rack of dinosaur ribs for his car, right?

2006 F150 (Tires) ... heck I'll sell the truck

SOLD -
I have a 2006 F150 (V8 5.4L) that I just put brand new All Terrain KO3's on (17'). And of course, 2 weeks after the tires were put on my timing chain went out. The timing was fantastic as I was 15 minutes from turning onto the dirt to make my way out to archery hunt ... I digress. Now I'm in this situation of repairing my truck or just buying a new one. Well ... I have decided to skip the repairs and just sell the truck or maybe just the tires -- So here is what I am thinking: 1. You can buy the truck for $2500 (new tires and all); matching spare. it's totally my hunting rig. Comes with a fresh set of AZ pin stripe, a rhino lined interior floor (because I got tired of scrubbing carpets), a Vortex sticker, a coueswhitetail sticker, and few other sexy hunting stickers. I will scrub the deer blood out of the bed, remove all dove feathers, and attempt to get all the fishing sinkers out of the back seats. I'm not going to be the guy that tries to say that I am selling an prestine vehicle..this truck has148K miles and loved every mile of it. It has covered a lot of dirt roads and mountain sides. I hate getting rid of it, but it's just that time. Clean title, Orignial owner ., and for what it's worth, the back shocks are only a year'sh old. If you buy it, it will need to be towed ... I live in Tucson. or 2. You can buy just the tires. I would like to get $1000 for them (I just spent 1100'sh a few weeks ago). If you have some old tires that you want to get rid of, I'd take them as part of the deal as I will need to put something back on the vehicle. I am not opposed to any offer you may have for the truck. Send it over ... what's the worst I can say? No?

2006 F150 (Tires) ... heck I'll sell the truck
BigGameHunter replied to BigGameHunter's topic in Classified Ads
I am not sure on the valves. To be completely honest, I did not want to pay to have the motor torn down and pay additional dollars knowing that I wasn't likely going to go through the entire repair process. I did look at jsut replacing the motor (entirely) with a rebuild at found price ranges between 3K - 5K. I quoted a motor (new at the dealership) and that was around $8K. -

The rear window was installed about a year ago after I put an ATV through it ...put that in the "shitaki happens" category of life. -
Depends where you plan on hunting, but Munds Park may be an option? Check VRBO for cabin options, lots of options... I know there are backroads to the back of Mormon Lake. Good luck!

I spent a lot of time talking to border patrol agents out in that area last year when I was scouting and hunting. The advice they gave me was to becareful in washes and valleys that run North and South. While I saw all the trash left behind from the illegals I didn't encounter one in my 4 days of hunting/camping, nor did I see any on my scouting trips. They are out there, but as border patrol said, they are trying to avoid you as much as you are trying to avoid them. If you still have concerns, remember this, you are a carrying a gun too. In regards to whitetail in that unit ... you won't be bored. There are tons of deer in this unit. Find a comfy spot and hang out behind those binos ... I was out there last weekend scouting, and found 8 WT (1 buck) in the late afternoon. I like your odds of filling that tag.

PointGuard, good idea or money making scam?
BigGameHunter replied to Capt. Don Martin's topic in Mule Deer Hunting
Not totally a fan ... I just hope they use extra revenue to bring down the cost of tags .. currently too many holes in the system as it sits now. I already disagree on the online application fee, plus now point guard ... but still the cost of licenses continue to rise. How about they use some these revenues to offset the cost of a lifetime license. DL -
I have 2 nearly brand new Duckett Micro Magic fishing rods - 7.6 ft (heavy) and 7.10 ft (extra heavy). They have only been used a few times by the prior owner - I have not used them once. They have been an awesome office decoration for the past year, but unfortunately nothing more than that. ***Reels are not included*** I would prefer to sell them both at the same time (which would mean bundle pricing cuts for the potential buyer). These rods new are about $160 each. I would be willing to part with them for $225 together. If sold separately, I will do them as $150. PM me if interested. They need a better home ... like in a boat!

5B - Nov - Bull I hope you all fill your tags ... just let me fill my first.
