My 2 hunting buddies in Cali, my lil brother, my 2 other az hunting buddies, and myself got drawn for deer! It's going to be a great year with a bunch of deer hitting the dirt! Congrats to all the other lucky hunters, and the cc are still getting hit so stay positive!

    Prairie Doggin'

Super cool. I was out in 10 last year helping on a goat hunt and we saw a bunch of prairie dogs and yotes, but my buddy wouldn't let me shoot, lol. He said something about waiting 8 years for the tag or something....lol

    How About a Tule...

No freaking way! You lucky lucky man! Once in a lifetime tag, enjoy it!

    Prairie Doggin'

Wow, that's all? Some of those dogs got blown in half and flipped several feet in the air. So awesome... I use my 300 WM and 110 vmax for varmints. took a bobcat in the head with it ( horrible shot, I know...) and it didn't even pass thru.very little damage.

CARNAGE! ABSOLUTE CARNAGE! That was awesome, what caliber/bullet were you using?

    Arm Strength

When I first started shooting again, I kept my sessions short(12arrows) and I lowered my draw weight. As I got stronger, I shot more arrows per session, more sessions per day, and raised the draw weight until I was back up to 70 lbs. Go slow so you don't get hurt and set yourself back even more. Good luck to you!

I got a hit, now the new waiting game is "what unit/hunt?"

Hiking socks- what do you use

I use Lorpen and Smart Wool socks, and smart wool liners, I've never had a blister. Keep an eye on camofire.com, they have great deals for Lorpen socks all the time.

    Finally

Good stuff! I have yet to call in a yote. I've called in a bobcat(37lb), a grey fox, and a mule deer doe, but never a yoter. Super jealous.
  10. You smoked that buck! Great story and pics! And I'm like you, even if I watch my buck go down, I still blood trail, even for 7 yards, lol.

    What rifle to set up

Either rifle is deadly for deer out to 500+. Go look at nikon, luepold, vortex, and pentax scopes, and see which one you like best. You can get the turrets for almost anything. I think you should get a good scope and sight in both rifles and see which one is better out to 300. It sounds like you've got a good problem to have though as both calibers will do everything you ask of it out to 500. But the .270 does have a storied history with coues whitetails...

    Dove hunting

There's alfalfa fields down there. Sure does make for some easy recovery. The farms down there bring the doves in in droves.

    Who is shooting a 6.5mm

I have been looking into the 6.5 creedmore for my daughter, but I may be jumping the gun a little due to the fact that she'll be turning 2 this September... Lol.

    Dove hunting

From what ive been told, Indian lands are off limits to dove hunting. I live in the east valley (Tempe) and shoot in the south eastern valley. Lots of areas and lots of doves down there.

    Ground deer recipes

Use it for albondigas, pronounced all bone diggers, (Mexican meatball soup). I've made it with elk and deer and it's a camp favorite, just add lots of mint. Also, chorizo is never a bad idea! Meatloaf maybe?

10 yr old swaro vs new vortex kaibab

I'd go with the vortex, the swaros are as is. If anything is or goes wrong with them, you're footing the bill. With the vortex, you're covered for life. No questions asked. And I've never been sold on the swaros, they cost too much when you can find something just as good for half the price. That's just my opinion, don't blast me for it, lol.

    2012 Goals

My goal is to get my lil bro a decent WT with both eye guards and help my buddies at least get shots at bucks. And to call in at least 3 bulls for my other buddy on his 5a tag archery tag. After that, a nice fat buck for myself would be awesome!

    300 um elk load?

Watch, after all this talk of 800 yards, you're going to have a bull run right into your lap and smoke him at 30 yards, lol.

    300 um elk load?

Make sure you post the pics of your monster! What unit/hunt did you get drawn for?

    300 um elk load?

The 180's out of a 300 ultra will put a hurtin on every animal in North America. And if your gun is shooting them well and they're what you're framilar with, why change anything? I'm a big fan of the TTSX, I use them for coues, they are one nasty bullet! That bull won't know what hit him.

    Who taught you to hunt?

My Pops (Jack Morales aka Mexican Jack) taught me how to hunt when I was just a little guy. Still can't believe he had the patience to deal with the bazzillion questions I threw his way. I had always wanted a elk rut hunt and when I finally got drawn for archery bull elk in 2010, i think he was more excited than I was! We also got drawn for 6a whitetail, which for me was awesome cuz it was the place of legends. As I kid, I always heard about the hunts and always wanted my turn in the canyons. I was lucky enough to take a 5x5 bull on my elk hunt, and a last day, by myself forkie in 6a. It was the best hunting season of my life. Unfortunately, my Pops didnt get to enjoy it with me, he passed away on August 8th, 2010 . Hunting for me was always therapy, but it got even more important after that. And that little forkie was a huge buck for me. Not his score or his weight, but what it meant to me. For all the crap, all the hurt, and all the obstacles I had to go through, taking that little buck all by myself told me, take a breath, youre going to be alright. He said something to me that ive repeated to myself whenever i didnt want to go for a run, or didnt want to go outside in the heat to fling some arrows. He told me "son, youve got a golden ticket in your pocket that everyone I know would love to have, don't waste it." I've repeated that exact same quote many a time and it always works, lol. So a big thanks to my Dad and everyone else out there that introduced someone to hunting or fishing, you've forever changed lives for the better, THANK YOU!

I've been looking for something like this but I have an old pair or ziess 15x60s and I don't think they'd fit. Is there anything out there that my nocs can fit into?

    Hunting mistakes and misses

I was on my first bull elk hunt and within the first 15 mins, my hunting buddies called in a 360 6x7. He came in with 3 cows, I stopped him broadside at what I thought was 45 ( I ranged the cows as they went by) and missed under him and absolutely smoked a P&Y ponderosa, lol. And to make matters worse, 20 mins and 300 yards later, I missed ANOTHER P&Y bull! Scratched him with one blade in his brisket. Before that moment, whenever I watched an elk hunter on tv say that "that was a great encounter, and it doesn't get any better than that" after a miss, I thought they were full of crap! But after it happened to me, well shucks, that was one of the best days of hunting I've ever had, and it doest get any better than that!

    Barnes Bullets

I just started using the 168 gr TTSX last year out of my 300wm. I'm getting good groups and the little buck I killed last year was DRTfrom 340. They are a nasty bullet and I recommend them, plus, you dont have to deal with the lead bullet restrictions in some areas.
  25. DO NOT BUY SITKA. I wore my sitka mountain pants once, ONCE!, in the catclaw in 21, and my pants were shredded! I did love the fit and style, but they could not stand up to the vegitation in Az, plain and simple. I bought a vest and a zip-t, no complaints there, but stay away from the pants! That, or stay away from the catclaw and scrub oak, lol, good luck with that! I tried out some pants from the new company KUIU and I absolutely love them! Bought a zip-t and beanie as well, and going to be adding more to the pile soon. KUIU just holds up way better and is cheaper to boot!
