Preparation for upcoming hunts what Diet and conditioning.
Antmo23 replied to swaro06's topic in The Campfire
I cut out all fried foods, alcohol, and soda from my diet. I also eat just a salad for lunch every day. Up until I tweaked my knee, I was walking 4.5 miles with a 45lbs pack on my back, was working my way towards bleachers with the same weight. Had to quit with the pack training but I've still lost 6 lbs with just dieting and doing a bunch of crunches. Almost to my goal of an in shape 165lber! -
Some roads, sure, but closing down so many that it's like they created a "wilderness area" is total overkill. I had a few areas in 6A that are hard to get to using to roads, without them it's dang near impossible! And that's coming from a 29 y.o. who works out just for hunting coues whitetails. And all this camping close to roads is going to get me in trouble for indecent exposure, lol. Idk about you guys, but just like a big ole camp fire, pooping in the woods is part of experience, a stinky part, but a part nonetheless. I doubt my neighbor campers are going to want to see that or smell what I ate for dinner the night before... Just my $hitty two cents....

Things your huntin buddies do that drive you nuts : )
Antmo23 replied to twigsnapper's topic in The Campfire
Ooh ooh oooh, I got another one! How about you help a buddy to kill his first big game animal, and he doesnt have a knife to gut it! or they kill it, then look at you to gut it, lol. I do love getting bloody though... -
If that's the same kid, he'll freeze it for ya, for a price that is, lol. I had my hunting buddies use his freezer then they took them home to Cali. I forget his name, but he always has a big ol chaw of dip in his lip, just tip him and he'll hook you up.

My back up rifle is a M77 and I hand load the 168 gr Barnes TTSX with varget and rem primers. I get way better velocity than factory loads and they are deadly. It shoots a lot flatter so start close and move back as you go. My buddy (gotmnts) hunts with this load and he loves it.

See, exactly my point. Youre half right and half wrong, here's your ticket. We were less than 30 ft off of the 295E and I still got a warning. The roads marked with dots are 300 ft camping, some of those without the dots are open to camping 30ft from the road. 295E is closed to ALL camping. And it's not marked. Some roads are open, some are not and there is only a confusing map (that the FS isn't even sure about) to use. Its camping roulette and it's total bull$hit. Either clearly mark the closed roads or keep your tickets in your pocket.

The way he was talking, it sounds like similar laws are headed for all the National Forests, not just the elk units. Everyone should be aware and fight these laws BEFORE they go into effect. I'm not a road hunter at all, but I dang sure like to drive close as I can to my hunting area before I start my walk. And this is going to jam hunters together on specific roads and take the fun out of the hunt camp. And with a lot of camps in a small area, if some anti wanted to destroy some hunting camps, this law makes it way too easy for them... This is really sad.

Quit shooting the small ones. They're the only ones that stand still! -

I got a buddy that will give me the shirt off his back if I was cold, I need anything, he's there, only one question asked, "where". BUT.... Very slow walker up the hill in the am (not really fair to him, I am taller and I got a loooog stride) but on the return trip, he's like a horse to barn! Lol, beats me back to the truck every time, lol. Great guy though, and puts in the work when it comes to scouting. Plus, he's hardly ever late! (in his defense, she WAS pretty hot....) -
I heard from a guy at ziess that they are (FINALLY) coming out with some 15 bys. And only after 20 years! I'd save up and wait for those. They're coming out the first quarter next year for only $1500! That's a steal.

Got my 2011 Archery Coues Skull Back!

Looks great! Did it really take almost a year though? That's a long time for a euro mount, but that velvet looks flawless! -

Recommendations for a good flashlight?
Antmo23 replied to Gr8 White Jr's topic in Other Hunting Gear
I got a pretty good one for free from the north American hunting club. I thought it was a junker and gave it to my son to play with. After I got my sight back from him blinding me, I hid it in my hunting pack, lol. -
I bought two for my buddies for helping me on an elk hunt. We all got bucks last year so I got to see them in action and they zipped right thru their bucks. Very sharp and easy to use, we were all very impressed. Feels good in the hand and the blades are very sturdy, plus, it's two knives in one. Had to empty out my pack, I found 7 knives in there, 7! No wonder the pack felt so heavy...

I'd go with Kuiu, a hunting buddy had a pair and they were legit. Pricey, but you get what you pay for. What's the use of keeping the rain off you when you're pouring with sweat cuz of your rain gear?

I love Straight 7, that's a dream bull for me, a double sworded 7by. Can't wait to see some of them on the ground!

36B: Any experiences or feedback?
Antmo23 replied to Airbusdriver's topic in Rifle hunting for Coues Deer
I was in there a few years ago, didn't see but one illegal, heard a bunch of them every night though. Deer are easy to pick out but def gotta get away from the crowds. My dad killed his last buck in there, it went 87", but we saw 4 or 5 that were bigger, just couldn't get on them. Ace High Benny is right though, beautiful country so take lots of pictures. And as always, bring a sidearm with you wherever you go. We heard some semi-auto fire on a few occasions... -
Looking for help with a GREAT problem
Antmo23 replied to mtn-memories's topic in Rifle hunting for Coues Deer
I've been in 6A the past two seasons on successful coues hunts, I've only seen one herd of elk. Had a good bull with them, prolly 350-360. Last oct we had a bull bugling right at nightfall in one of our areas, was a welcome suprise! I hunt in the southern part of the unit. PM me and I'll tell you exactly where for both species. Lots of good bucks and bulls in there and I'm super jealous, congratulations buddy! -
I got 24b nov and my lil bro got 24b oct! Looks like ill be in 24b for two weeks straight!
-
Let's just hope it soon, I want to see where, when, and what my group and I got drawn for already!
-
Yeah, either one in the middle would do me just fine...
-
I've seen this discussion on other sites, a lot of other sites. I shoot muzzys but I am going to give the grave diggers a try this year. Check them out, they are a "hybrid" mechanical/fixed.
-
Looks like a diff bull. Either way, I'm jealous...
-
It does look like two diff cats, but the times on the pics are a few seconds apart... Not trying to be a smart a$$...
