To Rail or Not to Rail, that is the question?
Hoss50 replied to Hoss50's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
I spoke with EGW on the difference between there Howa LA rail and Remington rail. The difference is where the notch for the loading port lines up to match the action. The 700LA holes are the same, the notch is different. -
I think 250-300 yards would be about my max comfortable range if he can hit consistently with the rifle. I killed a cow elk with 115gr from a 257 weatherby at 260 yards. Broadside double lung shot. I shot her a 2nd time quartering away because I didn't see the first round hit and she didn't react hard or run far. When I got up there I realized the first shot would have done it if I left he alone.

If he can place the shot with a good bullet at a reasonable range, yes. 100gr Nosler Partition or something like that is what I would be looking to shoot.

Has anyone used the Burris Tactical rings for rail systems? The seem to get great reviews for a much better price point then most picatinny rings. -
These are the big things that have helped me alot in my quest to do what your are starting. Range time Boots (I bought Crispi Nevadas) Layers and good base layers Knife (Benchmade saddle mtn skinner) Pack (Badlands with inner frame) Game bags (Black Ovis Elk Bags) Tripod Late rifle can be cold as HECK! Get good boots and base layers. If you get cold/sweaty with bad base layers your life will suck. I did it on my last late rifle tag, it sucked, and it sucked the fun out of hunting quick. A good place to sleep is nice too. I have a Kodiak canvas tent which is awesome, but on a late hunt that could be pretty darn cold. Have a good heat source. I also bought a used toy hauler trailer because a good heater and a warm shower are very nice to have when you get back to camp.

I have a hit for something in 23. Probably the October cow hunt.

When will the hits start? no thread on this yet?

The sad part is we might turn it in. My buddy won a Navajo reservation Bull elk hunt and we may not be able to do both. This should be a unit 23 cow elk hunt. -

6.5x55 has been putting in work for 120 years. It does everything a 6.5 creedmoor does, except fit in a short action. 6.5 creedmoor is just the cool new trendy thing.

Old Dodges yes. The new Aisin trans is supposed to be a beast. That is why both my older dodges have been sticks. That and I like to be in control. I know better then machines...
-
My order for what you need would be: 1. Dodge 3500 with Aisin Transmission 2. Ford F350 3. Chevy/GMC 3500 The new Dodge and new Ford are darn good looking trucks. The Chevy looks ok, but that stupid low hanging DEF tank is a deal breaker for me.
-
South bend and volair both make dual disk for 03-07 trucks. My buddy has 1 in his 03 with 5.9l. I think it sucks to drive daily but rocks for heavy towing.
-
If the only choices are Ford or Chevrolet. ..Ford. I drive a 2005 Dodge Cummins. I love the cummins, the dodge is just the shell it is wrapped in. I also prefer manual transmission. Whatever you do, get better shocks. Bilstien is what I have and it helped. It is still a heavy duty truck though. Harley

Reminds me of a big one we got in Colorado when I was in college there in about 03. We had a 2 keg party for St. Patrick's day but a blizzard started that night. Very few people showed so we had alot of beer. It snowed over 3 feet, and they shut town down for a week. We put the kegs in the snow drifts and played alot of drunk video games.

Mayer Harley Davidson had 8" as of about 2:45pm.

Anyone in Prescott or Prescott Valley have any updates? I want to try to Pig Hunt in Mayer tomorrow, but I don't really want to do that in 18" of snow.

I LOVE CZ 550's, especially in 6.5x55. They are not making many models with the 550 single set trigger anymore. Somebody needs to jump on this.

Has anyone ever hunted the Navajo Nation for elk? What general area did you go to, and how was it?

They are having a clearance on some guns that are really good deals if anyone needs them. A couple good options for kids. Howa 1500 Kuiu with 20" barrel. 7-08 & 243 for $349.00 ea. Ruger Precision in 6mm Creedmoor for $749.00 Weatherby Vanguard Accumark fluted SS Barrel in 257 weatherby $699.00 I almost bought the Kuiu in 7-08, but my love of 6.5x55 made this follow me home for only $249. Howa 1500 with hogue stock.

I have some stuff you can borrow. 67th and bell.

I seat and crimp pistol ammo in 2 separate steps most if the time. .357 mag and 38 special especially give me fits if I try 1 step.

I know some gun shops refused to be license dealers because they couldn't make any real money from it.
