New 1/2 Ton - What would you pick?

Titan or Tundra should be looked at too. We bought an 2015 Armada and it has been good so far. It has the same powertrain as the Titan basically and I love it. The only downside is the MPG when doing stoplight to stoplight driving. GM half tons scare me if they are still using any version of the 10 volt rear end or 4l60e transmission.

First tag for elk, 7W, any help appreciated

Most of the whole area holds elk. I have only hunted the 7E not 7W, so I dont have alot of info. I do know that Kendrick Mountain is a popular place, so in my mind I would avoid that.

Tikka is a good choice. If she likes it get her what she wants.

    GOOD NEWS!

Last year the leftover tags were $35 each plus the $13 application fee. Total was $48. Since I already had the deer tag in my pocket it was a no brainer. Especially since one of the last known sightings at the time of my hunt was not far from the area I had planned to hunt last year. I spoke with G&F people up there while I was on the hunt though, and the more recent sightings during the deer hunt had been on the 12AW side of the road.

    well place shot

Put it in the zone lance showed and you should don well. It gives you the most margin for error, but you still provide an ethical kill IMO. some people do like head, neck, spine shots, but you have much less margin for error. If you put that 168gr bullet in the zone it shouldn't go 3 miles. Just remember not to push in on the animal to fast if it doesn't go down right away, and to put another bullet in the zone if you can. Elk are capable of amazing things if you push them while wounded. Adrenaline is an amazing drug, so leave them alone and let them calm down. It will let them expire faster.

    GOOD NEWS!

If they really wanted them all gone they would issue a free elk tag with every deer tag so you could hunt both while on the deer hunt.

    CZ550 American 6.5x55 SE

Somebody besides me needs to buy these 6.5x55's. You won't regret it if you handload. CZ rifles are extremely good values for the money spent. Both of mine are sub-moa all day.

    GOOD NEWS!

I bought one of those tags last year when I was drawn for the early deer hunt. It overlapped and the plan was to finish deer hunting quick because 12a is easy to kill a big deer, then to try to find the elk. The plan didn't work so well. We got one decent deer quick, then busted tail for 6 days to find a dinky deer. By then my buddies knee was shot so we headed home without taking a real shot at finding the elk. If anyone is planning on hunting this elk hunt, PM me and I will give advice on what i learned.

    Too Hot

That primer is flat which shows pressure, but it doesn't show ejector marks or cratering which are other signs of over pressure.

    Bull Elk 22 South

No kuiu or high rent camo, so it doesn't count. I have been working hard to get better gear, and it has paid off. When we had to skin up my cow elk a few years ago it took every low end knife i had to get it skinned. That was frustrating, especially since we had a whole other elk to skin after mine. Sharpening knives to try and skin elk at 10pm at night when it is 20* plus wind sucked. Better gear helps mitigate the suck. I have found that out the hard way on multiple occasions.

    Bull Elk 22 South

The advice about releasing pressure on the gutless method is right on. I started to gut my deer traditionally last year, then made the audible to switch to gutless. It worked great. We did straight gutless on my buddies and as you tried to take off the hind quarters intestines and stuff started to try and pop through any weak area. We got it done without popping the guts, but mine was much easier on a larger animal. An elk is a huge creature. Be prepared. Find a friend to help if at all humanly possible.

Quarter it and hang it. Then start packing it. Gutless works well, just learn it before you apply it in the field. Get some good game bags a good knife, and a pack with frame. I have black ovis elk bags, that worked great on my deer last year. My benchmade skinner went through 2 deer without needing sharpened. 1 deer we got near a road, the other I had to pack out. I have a badlands pack that has internal frame, and it made it much nicer to pack out the pieces. You will not get an elk in a truck whole without a winch or come along or some other mechanical advantage.

Most gun shops will do it for free or a small fee. If not you can try The Armory in Glendale. For the fee a gunsmith might charge you could probably buy the full kit from Wheeler on Amazon or at Sportsman's Warehouse.

Wont leupold add CDS to most of there scopes if you send them the info and money? There custom shop will even change reticles and other things if you want I believe. If not Kenton will make custom dials for alot of scopes too.

    recoil fear

Double up ear protection and put a muzzle brake on it. Also load the gun but play the game of not putting the primer on and dont let her look. It will help her not know when or when not to expect recoil. Or a bow if that is aloud on the muzzle hunt.

First tag for elk, 7W, any help appreciated

Get away from the roads to get away from the other hunters. You will greatly increase you odds. Have a good set if boots, a good pack, and some glass. Use the boots and glass to fill the pack.

    Grand Falls today

    Pretty awesome
  25. My thoughts would be TTSX, Accubond, Berger, ELD-M or X. I have grown fond of Berger. I have personally seen 4 animals shot with them and none went far. They may not exit, but they get the job done. 115gr HVLD .257 weatherby vs cow elk @ 260 yards. It went 40 yards. 168gr HVLD 300 Win mag vs cow elk @ 350 yards. It didn't get far. 135gr Classic Hunter 6.5x55 vs mule deer @ 250 yards. It went 30 yards. 135gr Classic Hunter 6.5x55 vs mule deer @ 40 yards. DRT.
