If you are looking for a round in that caliber and power, go for it.

Cameron always has diesel. Then grab it again at the Vermillion cliffs. Next closest diesel to Jacob's is probably Fredonia once you are up there. Fredonia also has a Family dollar, and if you need dry ice hit Kanab.

I filled up in Cameron on the way up. Then I stopped off in Fredonia after the first day of hunting when we dumped my buck at the processor. By about day 5 I had to pay the $5 a gallon in Jacob's, but I only put enough in to get back to Cameron on the way home. I did have to get a couple pints of power steering fluid in Jacob's lake on day 2 as the cap on my PS pump went MIA. 1 pint was like $12 or $13 or something crazy. We improvised a cap with some aluminum foil and heavy duty rubber band.

I want to say the new owner of Randall's does hydro dipping. It might be worth a phone call. -
Berger VLDs Let Me Down - Suggestions???
Hoss50 replied to rossislider's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
My dad and I had this happen with a cow elk many years ago. At 50 yards he shot her with a 200gr Speer Grand Slam right in the boiler room. She kept going and he hit her again with another good shot. She ran toward me, and I shot her with a 338 win mag shooting 275gr semi-spitzers. My shot was a little far back and that heavy bullet penciled through. She turned around and ran back to my dad and he shot her 2 more times. All 4 of his shots should have stopped her. None of his shots exited. She ran another 75 yards before she piled up. She was still trying to get back up though. We gutted her, and I literally had to cut the top off a coke can and scoop out the liquid that was once her lungs and liver in with the can. This was in unit 8. She was a tough a** cow. I learned a few things that day. Elk are tough as heck, but that 275gr semi-Spitzer was to much bullet unless I planned to shoot shoulders. I also learned adrenaline is a heck of a drug, but I think if we would have let her keep going after the first 2 hits she would have piled up not that far away. She just got caught in a crossfire and the adrenaline kept her on her feet, along with being so close to her. -
Berger VLDs Let Me Down - Suggestions???
Hoss50 replied to rossislider's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
Awesome bull. I dont have experience on bull elk, but have used them on cows with success. Classic hunters have dumped mule deer for me too. I am looking at TTSX in my 300 weatherby though for a lighter bullet I can drive fast. It shot really well with 150gr TTSX. I am trying 168gr TTSX next. The 6.5x55 is going to stay with Berger though, and it will be that it the 300 weatherby on my cow hunt this year. -
All are sold. Please delete. Shot guns / youth rifles

How does the 243 H&R shoot? -
Tikka still makes a 6.5x55 which I am considering for my son. If you want to stay with a true short action though I would look at 7-08 or 6.5 creedmoor. I personally love 6.5x55 so I will probably go that route, but for me 7-08 is still in the running. With a muzzle brake or suppressor recoil will be a non-issue.

need help... never mounted a rail before...maybe gunsmith recommendations
Hoss50 replied to andrewmilich's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
P.S. a rail is a good choice if that is what you want. Get a good rail, and a good set of rings, mount it all correctly, and you will be rock solid. -

He is talking about Lance's personal scopes. They are all crazy high end super clear scopes and will make you feel bad about your own scope. Lance mounted a scope for me awhile back and I learned a few things. I have since bought my own wheeler mounting tools. You can use them if you need them. I am near arrowhead. -
My wife makes it too occasionally. She has rheumatoid arthritis and bone broth and things with good gelatin like broth made with chicken feet, bones, etc is supposed to be very good help reduce inflammation.

Colt has never liked selling ar's to the public. When they do you pay extra the name, not quality. You can buy better ar's for the same price as colt.

Off the top can mean different things too. Last year there were not a lot of deer near the park, but lower in the pines going north were still lot of deer. Near the park they still had standing snow in the shaded areas. Towards Jacob's there was no snow left. It was noticeably warmer near Jacobs then right on the park boundary. Last year we saw deer from the pine trees all the way down to the scrub. Just nothing higher up by the park.
-
Last year it snowed and melted twice before the early hunt. We did not see many deer up high by the canyon park boundaries. Forest service was working that area too and confirmed what we were seeing when we inquired.
-
I emailed Miller's and they are going to be in forest lakes during my hunt. I will check out the locals in Young too.

I have the U23 cow hunt in about a month. 23 is new to me, what is available for processors or cold storage near Young? We have 2 hunters, and it always seems if we get 1 down early, we have to wait awhile to get the 2nd one down. In the process we need to store the first potentially. I am also looking at coolers with dry ice, but I am just check to see what other options may be available?

nobody got game cam pics of someone dumping diesel in tanks? Every water hole has 42 camera's on them. Someone must have pics.

Tommy showed me this bull this morning when I was talking to him. Awesome. Congratulations.

What are your favorite recipes? Dove are not my favorite eating meat, but are one of my favorite hunts. What are you doing for prep that makes for a nice turn out? My wife's main objection is the chewy liver texture. I normally BBQ them or bacon wrap and BBQ them.

Remington 700 and vortex viper need scope ring suggestions
Hoss50 replied to andrewmilich's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
I put a DNZ I piece ring set on my buddies Howa 1500 and really liked the sturdiness and simplicity of a 1 piece mount. I have used standard leupold rings and bases on lots of rifles though and they worked great too. -
I completely agree. I am not the best at anything hunting related, but I think I have better calmness and awareness then many. I jumped 2 4x4's in 12ae last year on the early hunt. I had to make some adjustments to get a shot. I ranged them first thing at about 212 yards. I tried to use a dead tree as a shooting rest but it started to sway. I dropped down to use a downed tree as a rest, and my 40lb pack tried to suffocate me so I had to get it off. I got back on the deer who were moving away and they were trotting off. I wasn't going to take a moving shot, but I waited on them. I think disappearing behind the tree surprised them. And they would stop occasionally to try and see me. They stopped 1 time to many. I didn't have time to range again, but I knew they were probably about 250-275 so I held a touch high knowing my rifle was sighted in about 225. It only took 1 shot.

Do something like this. The factory filter isn't capable of filtering fine enough to protect the injectors like it should. https://www.cumminsforum.com/forum/3rd-gen-non-powertrain/1204577-70-diy-2-micron-fuel-filter-kit.html
-
I have the factory in tank fuel pump, and the factory fuel filter. In between them though is the DIY 2 Micron fuel filter kit I posted earlier. So realistically the factory filter is only there to act as the water separator in the fuel system.

Berger hunting bullets tend to open up aggressively. A thicker jacket probably isn't an issue. My 6.5x55 didn't exit at 250yrds on my mule deer. 135gr Classic hunters. They left this exit in my buddies forkie mulie @ 45 yards. It entered the chest and exited behind the front shoulder.
