Like a lot of people said. If you havn't been behind the gun practicing at 500 yards for awhile you have no business taking a shot that far on an animal. Its not fair to the animal when you make a bad hit because of lack of practice or skill. I have been working with my rifle and loads decently for almost 2 years and I still am only confident in myself and rifle to about 500 yards and even at that range it would have to be a good circumstance to take that shot. My goal for this rifle and scope though is only to be able to take up to about a 600 yard shot confidently. At this point I am confident to between 400-500 yards and I have shot hundreds of rounds through this rifle and scope combo. If you have no trigger time on the gun and the load then the responsible thing to do would be keep the ranges to about 300 and sight it in at 200. A 300 Win with a reasonable load sighted at 200 wouldn't be that low at 300 that you shouldn't be able to figure out the drop with a calculator and make a reasonable correction in your scope. Beyond 300 the bullets really start to drop and knowing what your rifle and round will do is key to taking quality shots.

So G&F got close enough to photograph but not tranquilize it.....

I feel your pain. I missed my hunt that I was really looking forward too. 1 of our buddies backed out for family reasons, another had a grandmother die and backed out. I got sick for 2 weeks prior to the hunt and the doctor didn't have a clue what it was so I didn't want to leave town. I am frustrated that I missed it but it is driving me to want to get out more and try new things like predator hunting. I am going to try and get out to do that very soon. Harley

If you Could Have Just One...
Hoss50 replied to SheepDreams's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
I like my 257 Weatherby for AZ. I hope to make some animals hate mine soon. For overall as a 1 gun for everything up to Moose it is hard to say. I like the 300Win & 300Wea. -
I will say one thing. If you are looking for something you can work on yourself don't get anything newer and the older Cummins have a much less cluttered engine bay. A sales lady I work with brought her husbands 2012 Ford 6.7L in to work 1 day and it wouldn't start so we popped the hood. Talk about 10lbs of poop in a 5lb bag. My 2005 Cummins is so much less cluttered and user friendly it isn't funny, and my old 98.5 was even more basic. The Ford had a MAP sensor issue. He loves his Fords too. I used to be a hardcore GM guy but for daily driver tow rigs it would be Dodge, then Ford for me.

International built all Ford's diesel motors from the 6.9L NA diesel in 1980's until the new 6.7L came out. The 7.3L was the best diesel Ford ever had, and that was replaced by the 6.0L which was the worst. I don't know enough about the new 6.7L to make an educated statement on it. Some people have great success with a 6.0L but there are a lot out there that don't. A good friend of mine just paid upwards of $5000 to get the topend of his 6.0L with 140K rebuilt because of the EGR system, including 1 new cylinder head because it was cracked. International is also using the Cummins in some of there smaller product offerings now too.

I am a huge fan of the cummins motor which means I choose dodges. I have about a decade and 250k miles under my belt in cummins trucks and will deal with the subpar interiors to keep a Cummins motor under the hood. I have towed up to about 18k behind a couple different trucks with no issues. They have all been great trucks with only minor and or normal known issues. They have all been pre 07 when the PDF filters or DEF fluid was required. I just bought my 2005 Cummins Dodge because it was pre emissions and plan to keep it for a long time. Harley

2014 "Brother Buck" (long post and picture heavy)
Hoss50 replied to lancetkenyon's topic in Mule Deer Hunting
I wondered why I hadn't seen you on UT in awhile. My buggy has been sitting since my son was born 2.5 years ago. Hopefully soon he will be able to spend some time in the garage soon. I took him out scouting for Javo last season and he loved it. I hope he gets interested in both hunting and wheeling. -

Nice work Lance. Congrats on a very nice buck. Are you getting out wheeling anymore with all these hunts? Harley -

How Fat is Fat? The All American State of Denial and BMI
Hoss50 replied to Healy Arms's topic in Hunting Fitness
BMI is a joke if you have a big frame and or muscle. I am fat now but I used to be in good shape playing high school and college sports. My sophomore year of high school I was 6'3" and 250 lbs and ran a 6:33 minute mile yet I was "obese" by the scale. After I stopped playing college football I dropped from 295lbs to 255 lbs and was rock solid muscle to the point I almost thought about working on a 6 pack abs. Yet I was "obese". A college health professor actually made me stand up in class about this same time and used me as the example of why the BMI is a joke depending on build and muscle. Right now in life I really am fat so I do need to start working on a health program again. I was getting in pretty good shape a few years ago with P90X but my training partner flaked out I had a kid so extra time has been harder to come by to do this kind of stuff. If I was "optimal" in the BMI with my large frame I would look like I was starving to death at 180lbs. -
I would have been tempted to shoot the deer out from under them, or drop a shot across the canyon just as they were getting the shooter setup. That is of course unless I knew there were bigger bucks in the canyon I was waiting to get too.

The procedure sounds right. It is a pretty straight forward repair. You will have to fill the rad after install and again once the thermostat opens the first time after the repair. Hawkes radiator if you want a new one. If not have a shop clean and repair it. That is probably repairable since it is on a metal end cap. Use green anti freeze and distilled water to refill. Change the hoses if they are questionable and replace the thermostat. Dont buy pre-mix antifreeze. Your just paying for half a bottle of water. Use distilled water only, no tap water. Harley

You should be asking a lot more for that truck. 10K is a STEAL even with the 24V motor. If it is a 12 valve that would be the holy grail of Dodge Diesels and is probably worth double that.
-
People are stupid. They should want this deer out of the population to keep its genetic defects out of the herds. Congrats to the kid, I would have dropped it too if I had the chance.

So ammo has been hard to find for 18 months and you top that with deer season when everyone is buy up hunting ammo and your mad you cant find ammo? We had the same issue last season with 243 for my buddy. He ended up with some federal hi shok It didn't matter, we didn't see a buck. I guess the lesson should be, if you see it, buy it. No matter what time of year just to make sure you have some.

I'm out then. I have no pennies for you to squirrel. Thanks anyway.

Are you looking for anything in trade Lance? Harley

I know you cant sell tags, but can you donate or sign them over? Due to a lot of different reasons I am pretty sure my group will not be able to make our hunt next week. Is there anything we can do other then just let the tags waste? Harley

My dad taught me about guns but was never really properly trained himself so I am learning and adapting as I learn. He used to clean every rifle fully after shooting it with the powder solvents, copper solvents, etc. I a, not saying that I know much better then him at this point, but I only do that now if a rifle is being put away for a long period of time. Now I mostly just run a patch or two with a CLP cleaner down the bore and call it good if the rifle is going to the range or field again soon. I have noticed with my 257 Weatherby that this has kept my accuracy and POI consistent from range visit to visit. It comes out of the case and hits like I want it too and expect it too. When I put the rifle away for the summer I will give it a full cleaning with a bore brush, or if accuracy starts to get funky I might hit it with a brush mid season. I use brass brushes because I always have. I am not saying that is right but it has worked for me, and until about a year ago I only owned 3 piece metal rods. I since upgraded to a 1 piece but still have not used a bore guide. I probably will for my rifles that are nicer and more about accuracy soon though. Harley.
