I took the wife to cabelas tonight. She gave the go ahead to buy a big are tent for much more then the original budget. She was in a 10x20 and liked it alot. We are thiking about a Eureka 15x12 and I really like the idea of the Kodiak flexbow but am not sure it is big enough. Does any place locally have one setup or sell them?

The one on here is sold. The Costco Coleman tent is getting very mixed reviews.

257 Weatherby - 115gr VLD load data?
Hoss50 replied to Hoss50's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
This is the rifle that I want to put a new Vortex Viper on but part of me really doesn't want to mess with this rifle if it will shoot like this right now. I kind of want to just dial in one of these loads with H1000 and leave the rifle as it, but at the same time I would love an nicer piece of glass on this rifle and also be able to transfer this scope to another one of the rifles I have that has crappy glass. My dad wasn't a believer in good glass so I have a lot of good rifles I need to switch from crappy Simmons and Bushnell to something even half way decent like the Redfield Revolution on this rifle. I took a couple of his rifles out to the range this weekend to determine my backup rifle for elk, and holy crap do the scopes suck. The Simmons on one is a giant flaming turd, and the bushnell on the other is marginal at best for 300 and under on a rifle that should be able to handle 500 easy (7mm Rem Mag Ruger Mk1). Harley -
Does anyone have any good load data for a 257 weatherby with 115gr. Berger VLD hunting bullets? I have most IMR4831 & RL22 for powder right now. Thanks Harley

257 Weatherby - 115gr VLD load data?
Hoss50 replied to Hoss50's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
I think H1000 is a keeper. I shot some 3 shot groups off my very first small ladder test today and had some very good results. The first picture is 3 shots @ 100 yards. 3 shots touching. The 2nd picture is 3 shots @ 100 yards. 2 shots in the same hole and one slightly lower to the right. The smaller hole is from my buddies 22lr. I only loaded 12 rounds with H1000 for today because I was low on cases. I did 4 different 3 shot groups. 66,67,68,69gr. The 67gr is the left pic and the 69 is the right pic. Not to bad for an almost stock Weatherby Vanguard with just a Redfield Revolution scope. The only rifle mod is I just added a Timney trigger. It was still set at 3lb as today was the first time I have been able to shoot the rifle since the trigger went in. -
I love my Redfield Revolution. I have a 3x9x40 that I am going to move to another rifle soon and get a new 4x12x40 for my 257 weatherby. I am also contemplating a nice vortex for it as well since I found out today a coworker can get me a sick deal on a vortex scope.

Randalls has about 6 lbs left. 1 pound per person.

Dodge. 2003-2007 with a 5.9l and low miles. I have an 05 and love it. No PDF or DEF crap.

To The Top. I have about 70 rounds of sized & primed 7-30 Waters brass (30-30 base brass) & a set of RCBS dies for 7-30 Waters that I don't have a use for. Harley

If you can't find any 44 special brass let me know. I can probably spare a box or so of brass.
-
With your setup, practice, and practice 500-600 should be easy. My 257 weatherby vanguard was making consistent hits on 8" steel at 500 with a Basic Redfield scope on a stock rifle. My loads were pretty good, but I have a better load now and I just put in a timney trigger. I have a rifle late cow elk Hunt this year. Harley

Start reloading. if you are going to shoot that pig regularly you will pay for the equipment quickly. The cheap stuff for that gun is probably $2 a round Or more. I have the same pig in my safe and it stays there most of the time. The recoil and amount of powder you have to feed it make it not worth it to me. I am considering putting a muzzle brake on it to make it more pleasant to shoot, but until that and new glass happens it is staying in the safe. My 257 weatherby is way more pleasant to shoot. For loads for that beast I would start with something in the 190-210gr range. Berger VLD, Speer BTSP, Sierra Game King or Match Kings. The one in my safe liked the 168 Berger and 190 Speers I used to feed it. My rifle has never seen a factory round go down the tube. Randalls had Remington brass in stock for that last I checked. Bruno's had a ton of Berger VLDS last time I was there. Get a press and learn how to use it.

How long is powder good for?
Hoss50 replied to joelpresmyk8's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
Keeping the factory seal intact if possible helps too. The which disc you peel off of the top of a Hodogon type can, stick it in the lid so when you close it again you get that seal back in there. -

I have used open pounds from 10+ years ago with no issue. Some may have been 15-20 years old. Keep them Dry and dark and it will last a long time. Harley -
Using old brass versus New brass for working up load
Hoss50 replied to murfys69law's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
I am no expert, in fact I am pretty novice but I prefer once fire or more for working loads. More often then not you probably won't have access to alot of new brass these days so you may not have a choice anyway. I like loading new brass more because there is less case prep but I also don't think it would be as uniform as fired and sized brass. Uniformity is the recipe for consistency. Harley -
Looking to build a big 33 and have some questions
Hoss50 replied to yotebuster's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
300 weatherby. off the shelf brass and more power than a 300 win. -
A cheap beater Saturn is a good choice too. They can be had cheap and are pretty reliable. 2 of my hunting buddies that commute from Wittman to Phoenix both drive saturns as there beater get to work cars and they do pretty well.

The old ones are the best ones. I bought a beat up Miller thunderbolt a long time ago. It worked much better then the newer thunderbolts the guy was selling for more money. It worked a heck of a lot better then my buddies Lincoln tombstone arc welder did too.

Is it bad that I have not even shot my first loads with h1000 and I am already looking for more. I have this gut feeling my 257 weatherby is going to love it.
-
It is becoming more available but it is still very limited. I have picked up abut 1500 rounds over the last few months for about $30 a brick. The hoarders are just making life harder. Harley
-
Randalls definitely had 4350 today when I stopped in.
-
I know you already made your choice and I think you made a great one. I love my .257 Weatherby but brass and powder add up for it. If you can get similar ballistics from the 25-06AI that is an awesome choice. Lets see some pics once you have it back!

300 Win Mag rounds. What would you use.
Hoss50 replied to murfys69law's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
#1 or #4 of the choices you have. I like Nosler Partitions, especially on heavy things like bull elk, but the placement of the shot is more important then the round though. I don't think I would use the #3 BT on an elk. Just personal opinion on that. I like ballistic tips but on smaller, thinner game. -
I want to reload, I need advice....
Hoss50 replied to ctracingraptor's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
Get a rockchucker and learn to reload. Once you do that then get a progressive for the pistol calibers and 223. I only reload for a couple pistol calibers because I still find it isn't worth my time to load things like 9mm on a single stage rock chucker. I load .38 super, .45LC, 44 Mag for pistols and a lot of rifle calibers on my rock chucker and do save money. You won't "save" money right off the bat because of the investment in machines and materials but if you shoot some odd ball calibers you can save money quick on those. I shoot .257 Weatherby and the cheapest ammo for that is $37/box, and the good stuff is $80/box. Depending on the bullet I use I can load 257 for $0.50 a round for target practice loads. I can shoot Berger VLD's in my Weatherby for $1.00 each basically vs. $4.00 each if you paid for them loaded. $3.00 a shot adds up to savings quickly. Obviously those prices don't account for "labor" but in my case it still would be much cheaper to reload. If you don't shoot the fringe cartridges you won't save quite as much as quick but what you will gain is knowledge and confidence in yourself and your loading ability. I am not a master reloader by any means but I taught myself to reload when I was 12 by reading reloading manuals in my dad's workshop. I have learned a lot more along the way through reading on places like this and trial and error. He got the equipment 2nd hand from a buddy and I learned how to load it for him. He invested the dollars on the equipment and invested the time to learn. I find reloading to be a relaxing event that I can use to get my mind off things like work and such. You won't save as much money as you could in the past as someone else mentioned, because the costs of primers and powder have gone up a lot. The availability of the items has gone way down too so you have to spend more time trying to find what you need to reload. That is the downside. The upside is it is much easier to swallow a $30/lb powder bill, $40/bx bullet bill, $4/bx primer bill that will load you 100+ rifle rounds then to go buy 100+ rifle rounds, especially if they are good rounds. You will learn to have the extra $50 in your wallet though for when you see that box of bullets or pound of powder that you have been looking for. You see it, you buy it. If you don't you will probably regret it later. -
I have just started working with Berger 115gr VLD's in my 257 Weatherby with very promising results so far. One of my first test groups was at or under 1 MOA @ 100yrds and I just added a new Timney trigger so I hope between the trigger and dialing in a load I can get .75 MOA or less from a basically stock rifle except for a trigger. I am probably going to start working with the 168gr Berger's in my buddies 30-06 also for our elk hunt this year. We have cow tags in 7E.
