Carrying Extra Rounds in the Field

I always carry a sidearm no matter where I am hunting or what I am hunting. Down south I have been known to carry quite a bit of extra ammo and sometimes even a 2nd sidearm. Harley

Carrying Extra Rounds in the Field

I carry a full rifle, and a sidearm. Typically it is my 38 super in a shoulder holster with 2 mags under the other arm. I care 1 extra round for the rifle in every pocket so I have a few easy to get to rounds, but that won't clank with other rounds, and I keep a 10 rd belt carrier in my small backpack with extra rifle rounds and a 12rd pistol round carrier in there as well. If I am down south or a questionable area I might put some extra in too. Better to have an extra pound or two of ammo and not need it then not have it and need it.

    308??

Shoot it. I plan to take my 257 Weatherby with 115gr Berger's for cow elk this year. Hit them where it matters and that is what matters.

    digital scale

I have a dillon that has served me well.
  5. My wife has arthritis is here right wrist and her 38 j frame has to much pop to shoot any more. We are starting to look for a 2" 22mag j frame for her. If anyone has one they would part with let me know. Hammered or shrouded hammer only please. PM me if you might have something. Thanks Harley
  6. Wow, glad your dog is ok. That's some scary stuff. A good friend of mine lives out in Whittman on an acre and has had his boxer bit by a rattler and most likely stung by a scorpion. He ended up rushing to the EM vet twice in about a year and a half and that is never cheap. Good thing for your dog and his that you are good pet owners.

    22lr ammo

I know Randalls has a ton of orders in with suppliers and they are all backordered. They are always just getting pieces of some backorder in as there stock from what Harlan was telling me. He said the UPS guy is like Santa because you never know what part of what backorder is showing up when he pulls up. Sportsman's is prob better organized then that because they have alot more buying power and computer based corporate ordering, but I am sure there are some standing backorder issues with everyone.

What guns or bow would you want back?

I don't sell guns or tools, that is my rule. I did sell a couple of both when I was out of work once but they were things I didn't have a connection to really and I knew I would replace them with something better that I actually wanted when times were better.I had duplicates of the tools and other guns that would do the same job as what I parted with. A Walmart special Rem. 700 in 3006 and a shotgun. That was over 5 years ago and I don't have regrets. That said I prob won't part with many more in the rest of my years. Harley

    22lr ammo

This is clearly what is happening.. friends (employees) holding for friends He said they don't really hold much back other then what they keep to sell with a gun. He said they will keep a little back so employees can get some when a shipment comes in. He just tells me when. They get some in so I can give him some cash if I have any. Dick's doesn't give discounts on ammo or guns to employees which I thought sucks so I pay full price, I just have a better knowledge of when they have 22. Sportsman's situation sounds shady though. A pallet could see holding back if that was a sale item on the next weeks sale and they were instructed not to put it out. 3+ different kinds in quantity is just rude.

    22lr ammo

A guy I work with works weekends at Dick's and let's me know when they get some in. I give him money when I have some and he picks it up for me. Randalls had some fairly regularly too so I grab some there when I see it.

    Custom Loads

Do you reload yourself at all? If so grab a pound of powder and some Berger VLDs and start working. I bet you find a good load pretty quick. 3.22 oal to start.

    Dog owners

We used to feed Breeders Choice that was an AZ company out of Camp Verde with good success. The problem is with 4 dogs it was too expensive so we switched to Costco brand food. We have a Rottweiler with a sensitive stomach so trying to find foods that don't mess him up is hard but both of the above were good for him. Harley

    Custom Loads

I don't know any place to load custom loads but if you want some load data I can give you some places to start. I have been working up my loads for a couple years now. I have a couple that shoot really well in my 257 Weatherby Vanguard.

    Results are up

I drew the sidelines for this year's deer hunt. I will use the time to scout for my elk hunt though.
  18. Yep. That is them. Harlan who is the owner is a cool dude.
  19. I 2nd the comment on Randalls. They have always treated me well and I have been going there for a lot of years now because of it. I haven't spent a ton of money on guns or supplies recently but when I have it I try and spend it at Randalls first. They are one of the few places that still stocks a fair amount of reloading stuff. Just how tough are Elk?

They will run quite hard and long on pure adrenaline. My dad hit a cow elk twice at 40-50 yards with a 300 weatherby and she kept running. Good clean shots with no exit holes. I then hit her with a 338 win mag which wasn't the best shot but it was still in the right ballpark. She turned 180* and kept running right back at my dad who hit her 2 more times clean. She kept running another 40-50 yards and finally folded up. It was crazy. She got hit with over 1000 grains of lead and wouldn't go down. Pure adrenaline and will to live. When we cleaned her out I literally used a coke can with the top cut off to scoop out the lungs and liver. The we're liquid, not organs and she was still trying g to get up after she went down. I have seen videos of the same kind of shot with smaller rifles put bull elk down where they stood. She wasn't having any of that noise. Harley

    WTB Kodiak Flexbow 10x14

If I had to do it over I would buy the model with windows on the ends. I got the deluxe with the top vents which is good but in the heat the airflow of the extra windows would be nice.

    WTB Kodiak Flexbow 10x14

I just bought my Flexbox 10x14 off amazon directly from Kodiak Canvas. The price was $580 if I remember right with free shipping. I have only used the tent once so far, but let me echo the above. This tent kicks some major butt in comparison to any of the normal cheaper Coleman style tents I have ever owned and used. They are not even in the same league.
