    Bergers FAILED me horribly

My cow elk went down last night. 257 weatherby mag shooting 115gr Berger VLDs. About 150 yard shot I am guessing. First round was good double lung. She ran about 40 yards and turned back to look and I stuck another one in quartering away. She went a couple feet and dropped. The 2nd round I imagine was logged in the far. Side front leg. Another guy in my group stuck 1 last night too. 165gr Bergers out of a 300 win mag at 350 yards. 1 shot she went about 60 yards and piled up behind a bush. None of the 3 rounds exited and he said the blood trail on his was non existent. Mine didn't need 1 as I saw he hit the ground. Harley

    Savage Axis??

I already have a 6.5x55 sporterized mauser that I upgraded the scope on it and started load development on a month ago that will probably be his first rifle. I also have a savage 99 in 243 that I can outfit him with. The 99 is one the rifles I have that needs a serious scope upgrade though. It has a sweet 3x9x32 Bushnell sport view on it now from about 1979. I do have a 9 month old though that will need a deer rifle in about 9.25 years so I have a little extra time on the 99. The cool part is the mauser will be his grandfathers rifle he will shoot and the 99 is for the younger son will be his grandmothers rifle. They can't have my 257 weatherby til i'm dead or i upgrade.

    Reloading MIsc.

    2nd on the leupold.
  8. Try something slower like rl-19 or 22. That might do the trick. I am loading 165gr speer btsp in 3006 for my buddy over rl-22 with good success.

    Ruger Blackhawk Bisley 44mag FS

Sweet deal. I love my single action rugers. I have to many to justify another though, especially in 44 mag.

Info on the camo pack please.
  12. I wonder if I am having a problem in the system too. I was not drawn for javelin according to my cc charges but when we entered the draw 1 hunter had to buy a license. I was never able to print the license because of an error or reprint the license through the site. I emailed g&f with no reply, and was apparently not drawn.
  13. I have not shot barnes but like mentioned. Try different powders and depths and if that doesn't work try a different weight. If it is still no good try a different bullet. My rifle shot ok with nosler ballistic tips but I switched to berger bullets and it liked them much better. I then tried different powder and the gun loves Bergers and h1000 powder. It will shoot them under MOA and sometimes under .5 MOA. The best the nosler did was about between 1-1.5 MOA. you just have to keep experimenting and don't be afraid to try different bullets. Reloading is science. Keep changing 1 variable at a time until you get the results you are after. Harley

    Camo Poncho/Gillie Suit?

Does anyone use a camo poncho or similar while hunting to break up your outline and lines? Some of the areas I have scouted for my elk hunt won't provide a ton of good cover so I have been thinking about making a camo poncho of sorts to help break up my outline as I hunt. I have a couple sections of camo burlap that I have been thinking about using to do this with to make a sudo gillie suit/break up poncho. I dont own any high end cool guy camo and don't plan to soon. Any thoughts. Thanks Harley

    Savage Axis??

Dick's and Cabela's are both supposed to have them on sale super cheap for Black Friday. Might be worth a shot. I have really thought about one in 243 for my son, but I am not sure he needs a deer rifle for his 4th birthday. I also can't justify buying another gun and needing another scope when I have more than 1 rifle that needs a scope upgrade already as well as a couple that need a muzzle break. I could use the money I would spend on the axis to start slimming the list of rifles that need upgrades. Harley

    Stiff bolt close? Why

I had this issue with my 257 weatherby. I was loading 7mm mag brass so there is no way the case is to long. The bullet was seated to far out and jammed the lands. I have also had this problem with 3006 and that was from the cases being to long. Harley

    Camo Poncho/Gillie Suit?

This one wouldnt be for rain. It will be made of a loose woven camo burlap and used while sitting to brake up my outline. I keep an emergency poncho in the day pack as well.

    19a elk tag

There are good bulls in there. We had a cow hunt in there about 15 years ago and ran across a BIG 4x4 bull in there.

    Dead game in waterhole?

I called G&F this morning and reported it. The dispatcher said they would give the info to the field guys. I will probably check the same tank in a couple weeks when I go scout again and will see if they actually did anything. I would have tried to get it myself if it was closer to shore, but I only had a 30' tow strap with me which would have put my truck pretty close to the water to try and get it up and out without burying it in the soft stuff near the bank. It would have been a cold dip in the pond to get it out too. Only 1 antler was visible and it would have been tough roping it with my tow strap. Harley

    Dead game in waterhole?

Today in 7e my buddy and I found a dead bull elk in the middle of a cattle tank. He appears to have an exit wouND on the side you can see. Who should I contact about this or will any .gov or someone do anything about it other then continue to let it rot and pollute the tank? PS if you lost a nice 4x4 or so bull in 7e I may have found him. Harley
