You need to be licensed to transmit on the 2m HAM frequencies, but you can listen in and transmit on the MURS and FRS frequencies without license. FCC only regulates transmission on the HAM side, anyone can listen in.True, but these radios are FCC Certified for use under Part 90, which requires a license. The radios are NOT certified for use under FCC Part 95 which is required for use on GMRS and FRS frequencies, so it is not legal to use them for GMRS or FRS. The output power of these radios is also more than allowed for GMRS and FRS. If all you need is MURS and FRS, then buy the many basic radios out there without possibly violating FCC rules with the Baofeng. http://wb7tjd.org/wiki/FRS,_GMRS_and_MURS_(Radio_Services_under_FCC_Part_95_Rules)#BaoFeng_UV5R_is_Part_90_Type_Certified You're correct. Thanks.

Very cool. I use the living daylights out of Google Earth for scouting and planning. I also use it as a hunting journal to track where I see stuff. I use the topo overlays and they are a huge help.- 10 replies

Good luck out there Cody! Hopefully you'll be able to tag something.

Unbelievable! What great bucks, all in one day. One day I'd love to go on one of these hunts.

I'm going to try the Baofeng UV-5R Plus. I just ordered 2 and a pair of upgraded antennas. I'll post up a review when I get a chance to test them out.

That is funny. I am in the market for new ones. I have a pair of cheap Cobra radios that suck too. I have a $50 amazon gift card so I'm looking what I can get online. If not, these at Costco look ok and I can always return if I don't like. http://www.costco.com/Motorola-MT351R-2-pack-Talkabout-Weatherproof-Two-way-Radios-Bundle.product.100057570.html These are the ones I currently have. They're terrible. http://www.cabelas.com/product/Motorola-Radio-Pro-Pack/1612369.uts?Ntk=AllProducts&searchPath=%2Fcatalog%2Fsearch.cmd%3Fform_state%3DsearchForm%26N%3D0%26fsch%3Dtrue%26Ntk%3DAllProducts%26Ntt%3Dmotorolla%2Bradios%26x%3D0%26y%3D0%26WTz_l%3DHeader%253BSearch-All%2BProducts&Ntt=motorolla+radios&WTz_l=Header%3BSearch-All+Products I've been doing a ton of research on radios and it seems that a MURS handheld might be the way to go. They're basically comparable to true GMRS, which requires a license, but much better in outdoors settings through trees and over hills. Anybody else using MURS?

I got a smoking deal on one that I'm going to pick up today. $275 shipped. I am just having problems finding ammo. None at my walmart. I ordered 2 boxes from Cabelas online as they don't have any in store either. -
Very cool! Monster Bulls

Anybody else have this hunt? This will be my second time hunting it. In 2010 I got a small forky, but looking to take a larger one this year. With so many tags, I'm sure I'm not alone on here.

They were just a couple miles south of that.

First season for 6A. My first turkey tag. Can't wait. I saw a ton of turkey up in 7 last weekend while deer hunting. First time I've ever seen turkey in the wild. Got me excited.

So I headed back up by myself Saturday and hunted the remainder of the hunt trying to get something tagged. I got up there at 6am Saturday, just as the sun was rising. I got into the area I was planning on hunting, but it was a bit thicker on the hill than I expected. I glassed the surrounding area as best I could, but nothing. I decided to turn and glass a mountain that was about 1.3 miles away. I immediately glassed up a big white rump glaring in the morning sun. I watched for a minute and as the deer lifted his head from feeding, I got PUMPED! Massive 4x4 (which I figured he was massive since I could clearly make out his antlers at 1.3 miles). Then all of a sudden they started coming out of the woodwork and 6 more bucks showed themselves feeding across the open mountain. Since I was by myself, I was trying to figure out the best plan of action to take to have a chance at one of these deer. My first thought was to sit and watch them feed across the mountain, and hopefully get them bedded. Once bedded I could make my move and sneak in on them. As I watched over the next 5 minutes, it became clear that they were making their way back down toward the tree line. I quickly changed my plan and decided I had to move now. I quickly hiked off the mountain and back to the car (which was a 3/4 mile hike). I drove to an area that would give me the best chance to cut off the deer, and I hiked in. Hiking as quietly as possible I hiked up the mountain. As I approached the top of the tree line, I realized I went in 1 finger too far back. So I had to quickly hike back down the cut and back up the first finger of the mountain. By the time I got there I couldn't find the deer and I was pretty sure I blew my chance at cutting them off. I found some fresh droppings and track, but no deer. I was now chasing them instead of cutting them off. Frustrated I decided to follow the track and sign into the forest to hopefully find them, but had no luck. I searched the rest of the day with no luck. Sunday rolled around and nothing. I am glad I got some excitement and had the chance. I had a great time hunting, but fell just short. At least I can honestly say it wasn't for lack of effort. I learned a lot more about an area of this unit that faces little hunting pressure, and clearly holds deer. Maybe I'll have to try again another time. There's always next year. After this hunt I caught myself thinking... "Man I miss 36B"! I've attached a couple photos of the deer through my binos, which doesn't do much. You can't really see much detail from the photos but at least you can see they're there. Also, The bucks started sparring on the hill and I just happened to catch it on video. Here's a video of that that I posted on youtube.

Turn him in for sure! That's just stupid. I can't believe people actually do this stuff. -
Headed out Thursday afternoon and did some last minute scouting Thursday night before the Friday opener. Glassed up 10 bucks running together. One was a very nice 4x4, 2 good 3x3s and a bunch of little forks. Watched them until they bedded just after dark. Spent the rest of the weekend looking for them, but no luck whatsoever. Only saw 2 doe and 2 fawn the rest of the weekend. The area we were hunting wasn't being pressured too badly, and we didn't see many hunters at all (we stayed away from the peaks, clearly). We hiked miles upon miles and glassed from every little hill and mountain we could. I'm heading back up this coming weekend in hopes to seal the deal. It was very frustrating not being able to find them again. I only wish I knew where these dang animals were going during the day. Hopefully this coming weekend will bring me better luck. All and all had a great time with great friends.

So looking at the weather forecast for the next couple days up in Flagstaff, and it is going to be getting down to the upper teens. Is this low enough to move the deer off the higher elevation? If no, then what should? Is it a couple days of low teens or what? I've always been curious.

That is so cool!

Call me crazy, but I'd prefer a comfy place to sleep any day. It's my reward for hiking all day.

I just did a little load development with some 145 grain LRX bullets and got a group in a single hole at 100 yards using 42 grains of Varget. That's in a Tikka T3 Lite Stainless.

This part made me smile! Awesome story and experience. Good Job Justin!
