How early should hunt camp be setup?
have2hunt replied to scoutm's topic in Rifle hunting for Coues Deer
My dad will be settin up camp wednesday morning and is gonna do a little extra scouting for a few days. I won't be leaving NAU till about 5:30 Thursday night and wont get to camp until midnight or later. Its a long drive especially at night, but well worth it! -
I have the rip cord rest and I really like it a lot. Since I got this rest I have been shooting more consistently and have tightened up my groups by quite a bit. One of the nice features about it is that you can let the rest come up as you draw or you can cock it in place before you draw. There is also a little containment finger that keeps the arrow from comming off during a stalk or while drawing back. The only thing that I dont like about the containment finger is that it is plastic and could possibly break, but other than that this is an awesome rest!

Hunting Accidents
have2hunt replied to desertsheep's topic in Miscellaneous Items related to Coues Deer
Man there are some really amazing stories that everyone has told. I myself have been fortunate enough to only suffer a few twisted ankles, although I do know of a few fishing accidents. One of them was during the summer when I went with a family friend that had never really went fishing. He had quit fishing and was messing with the catfish and at one point he some how stepped on one that I had thrown on shore and the sharp fin bone went completely through his big toe and was sticking out about an inch. Looked pretty painful and took quite a bit of pulling to get it out. I also had a few buddies that were fishin with some waterdogs and one of them caught the ear of the other guy when he went to cast. It ripped part of his ear but fortunately it was able to be stiched up. -
Off season hobbys???

I have lived my whole life in Greer until a few years ago when I came to NAU. I am very excited to head back when school is out. Greer is beautiful and has enough things to do outdoors to keep you entertained all year long. I take advantage of any spare time I get to get out and about. I am gonna go up in a few weeks to look for some horns and try to hook into a big brown trout in some of the Greer lakes. I also want to do a little scouting for my upcoming turkey hunt. Around mid May I always make a few trips to Black river on the reservation to slaughter the bass and catfish. -
Little while back I shot a pig with my bow. I have a unit 1 turkey hunt coming up soon. Last spring I shot a pretty good one opening morning not very far from my home in Greer, hope to kill another this year and im gonna try and kill it with my bow. I will also be doing some horn huntin next week back home while I am off for spring break. Oh and congrats to DEERSLAM on the successful hunt! What did you shoot your boar with? Hope to see some pics soon!

I know that not a lot of people are fans of the .243, but I think that it is an awesome rifle. I have been shooting a remmington youth model .243 since up until I was about 18. I have killed 6 coues and 3 pigs and a few varmints with it. My longest shot was on a coues at about 300 yards and the buck it did not go far at all. I shoot the factory 100gr remmington core lock and have been very happy with the way they perform. The 243 may not be a huge caliber rifle but with the right shot placement and ammo I believe that it is one heck of a rifle.

Wow that is an exceptional buck and it has some great character too! I especially like that palmation. Congrats on taking such an awesome buck! -
Between the December and Janurary bow hunt I have spent a total of about 5 days in 27. We seen a lot of deer and a few good bucks but never seen much sign of pig, although we did see a herd of about 6 pigs cross the road. We followed where the pigs went and called a few of them back in to about 10 yds. The area we seen those pigs I seen a decent amount of sign, it looked like the pigs had been staying in there for a while. I also had a pig hunt in 27 about 3 years ago and hunted pretty hard in both Juan Miller and Eagle Creek and never seen a single pig the whole time. If you want you can email me and I would be glad to give you the whereabouts of them pigs.

I hunted 27 last friday and saturday. We didnt hunt the blue or up by Alpine much, although we did see deer quite a few deer from strayhorse on down to the lower country. We mainly stayed in the lower country down by Juan Miller and Eagle Creek. We only seen one herd of coues and the buck that was in the bunch appeared to be ruttin pretty good. My buddy barely missed that coues which was a decent 3x3. We seen quite a bit of muley activity on saturday but from what we seen they were not ruttin too hard. We did see a herd or two of mulies that were hittin the water or close to it. Hopefully this info was somewhat helpful to you. I will be in 27 again on Friday, i'll most likely be in a '93 4x4 red extended cab chevy, if you see me pull me over and talk. Good luck.
