    shotgun shell suggestions

I know that #00 is more than adequate. I shoot 9 pellet outta my full choke and have it patterned out to 60yds plus some. My choke only throws #4 reliably out to 45yards give or take... that's why I said #4 reduces my range BY 20 yards not TO 20 yards. I know that you can kill 'em with game loads up real close, but what does the skin look like after??? I just put a few #00 pellets in the dome and call it a day. I don't take running shots, I aim like I'm turkey hunting. That goes hand-in-hand with getting them in close so I can put a good well-aimed shot on them. I don't own a varmint rifle, otherwise I'd use that- I only use a shotgun. I see what your sayin' yotebuster, my post might have led the OP astray... I just told him what I use and what works best for me. I need to find a choke that works better with #4 so that I don't get a 20" pattern at 50 yards. And Hevi-Shot is just too much $$$ for me. I can kill just fine without that High-tech tungsten nickel matrix gobbley gook.

    one more good wolf

Wade, I love ya man, but the Federal Government needs to stay the heck away from educating our children... They've already done irreparable damage. Just use the money to chip away at the $15 trillion...

    New to Coues deer

Alot of folks treestand hunt for Coues where available. It helps you get close to them. Also you can hunt from ground blinds provided you find an area that they use regularly.

In my opinion, for hunting shows to save face, they should have to show the after care (to include legal tagging) and in the credits there should be a blurb about what was done with the meat. You see the same guys hopping from state to state shooting deer like gangbusters and you never see them tag the deer or their full freezer... hmmmm. Wonder if it's all on the level.

    Road Hunting

I don't like the azgfd definition one bit. As long as you have your unloaded firearm in a separate compartment or cased outside of easy reach, and you then cut the engine and completely exit the vehicle and get off of the road in order to take said game animal... what's the problem? With the standing definition, you could interpret that every time youo drive to the hunting area you are using your vehicle to aid in taking game. Ridiculous. Another trampled liberty.

Start out with standard #4 buck, #00 buck, and the expensive but lethal Dead Coyote T-shot. I shot both a bobcat and a coyote in the past few months using #00 buck, and I've patterned it out of my gun and I like the results out to 60+ yards. #4 buck just reduces my range by 20 yards. I didn't find that the fur damage was a problem...

They drew out ALL the rifle and muzzleloader tags this year to my understanding. Must be one of those rarities that you speak of. They get pressure- maybe not in the closed areas, but the areas that are always open those deer get the snot knocked outta them...

I have hunted there before just not doing the archery season. Rifle seasona a couple of years ago. They told me I can set up a blind just leave my contract info attached to it. Just dont complain to them if it is stolen. That is like that anywhere. Yep- I checked my poorly printed Ft H hunting regs and it says anything left out must be properly tagged.

    Feral hogs in Arizona

They said the same thing in Texas, but substitute 7mm mags for 30 round AR's, and night hunting/helicopter hunting/trapping/running dogs and stabbing are all legal means there... They are still way overrun with 'em. Once their population explodes, there's no stopping it- a typical sow can drop dozens of piglets a year... I just wish deer were as fruitful.

Nope- can't leave anything out there on-post... Camping is also prohibited I'm certain. Mandatory MP Desk hunter sign out/in, hopefully they told you all the rules. Oh yeah, and MANDATORY weapons registration before you can bring them on-post(not for bows, only guns), but if you get caught without registering... slammertime. Off-post there's plenty of campsites, and you can leave a blind (if you dare) unattended only 24 hours- then it's considered abandoned I believe... With the high amount of "Northbound Traffic" in the area, I wouldn't chance it unless it's a cheapo blind.
  16. Has anyone used a squirrel tail as a motion decoy??? If so what would be the best way to rig it up?
  17. Mine is my older Mossberg 835 with either the 18.5" cylinder barrel (brush-gun), or the 28" vent rib with a factory full choke (out to 75yds). I put a tactical M4 style buttstock on it and a new picatinny forend with a hand grip on it when using the short barrel, slick when the long barrel is on it. I'm 2 for 2 in AZ so far... haven't really missed much with that gun in it's lifetime either come to think of it!

    #@%!& shotgun sights!!

I have a dedicated pred-slayer shotgun I named "Dead". It is/was a mossberg 835 that I put a m4 style butt stock on, a picatinny forend, Truglo fiber optic front bead and I REMOVED the rear bead that came standard on it because I hated it. I am 100% confident that anything out to 75 yards will die- hence why I named the shotgun "Dead". Aside from that, when I learned to shoot sporting and skeet clays (Junior Olympic/Scholastic Clays NSSF development program back in the 90's)... My coach removed our shotgun beads COMPLETELY so that we'd learn to get ON the barrel and not over it- as well as most people miss because they start the bead ON the target instead of sustained or swing-through lead. I still hunt birds without use of a bead reference and do just fine.

Thanks for the advice guys... I will have to build something like you all have.
  20. I'm interested, but that's the week after my 1st kid is due... gonna have to talk with mama on that one! I don't think it will go over very well with family coming in

On-base is tough without scouting too. When you're dealing with on-post hunting, you can never assume your area will be open, or how many hunters they will allow in the area. Off-post has alot of public areas with just as many deer- one could take the first day of the hunt and find a good area, then exploit it easily in the following days without a problem. I'm stationed here and I prefer to hunt off-post. Lots more room to breathe!
  22. I once ran down a rabbit... I saw it and sprinted towards it- it didn't think I saw it, I ended up running clean over it without the rabbit even moving. It got the point afterwards and ran off. I also have put a heck of a stalk on a flock of Flambeau Ducks someone left on a stock tank... I was only partially embarassed.

    1st Year hunting Arizona.

Well, I hunted hard. Saw deer almost every time I went out- but no shot opportunities. In fact, I only saw one buck who was running scared out of his mind from hunters walking in late. I look forward to this weekend's archery season opener... Gonna try to sit in my blind near some water for awhile, then maybe try stalking if that doesn't pan out.

    which bow companys best

I shoot a Browning, which is a PSE... Personally, I think PSE and Matthews are the best out there. Mattews are just too much $$$

Call the Sportsman's Center and find out when the archery-only non-permit tag hunts are... I believe the next one is January sometime. January is a good month for Coues (from what I've heard), but hunting the Fort is not as simple as showing up- gotta find out what training areas are open and where the deer are, as well as getting properly licensed to hunt on-post. I wish you luck, if I don't get one off-post in December, I'll be hunting there in January.
