Muzzle loader coyote - before & after
Scooter replied to Couestracker's topic in Predator Hunting and Trapping
nothing like .50cal justice served on a deer killer!!! -
I got schooled by Big Browns on my December Coues... I could not believe how easy and quick it was for him to skin out and quarter 3/4ths of my deer while I struggled with my "sharpened" regular knife. Ridiculously sharp and easy to use and as long as you don't torque the blades too much they hold up real well. azslim, how are you resharpening them??? What angle and stone do you use?

Looks like you need to find a new spot- that one's too popular and accessible! Sorry for your troubles, but that's the price we pay to hunt public. Etiquette and ethics are not currently in widespread practice, so you can either get frustrated or learn to deal with it and/or avoid those who have no sportsmanship.

Those 7 'sets' could have been over a week, a month, heck even a years time... They're selling a product, remember that. They were clearly claiming it was the same day, and I don't really have any reason to doubt their integrity. They could have easily sold it with the awesome footage they had without having to claim that it was all done in one day. Doesn't matter anyway, I tend to believe the Foxpro will always be a better E-call in the end... I was just pointing out that the Alpha had been on TV recently.

There are many reasons for not shooting a buck that's staring at you... I have always heard that when they're staring at you and tensing up with adrenaline, the meat tastes bad. I have no actual proof of that but an old timer used to tell us kids that little gem every year.

all proceeds going to CWT.com Comprehensive reading is a lost art. Not only that- I've read and re-read AZHUNTER's post a few times over and I still cannot decipher what he was trying to say... I only see 2 posts total, so maybe we should cut him a break on this one.

Randy Anderson is my coyote calling hero and the reason i went with the primos call over the fox pro. I figured if it was good enough for him then that's what I wanted. Little did I know that he probly had a truck bed full of callers because they don't last more than two stands. That was my thinking as well- if it'sgood enough for Randy Anderson, it's a good call... I don't own either foxpro or a Primos E-caller but I can vouch for the Primos Mouth calls being an excellent and effective low-cost option for those that choose to use mouth calls.

Was watching the Primos TV show the other day when they had Randy Anderson and a buddy on. They had an Alpha Dogg out there as well as mouth calls and shot 12 coyotes on maybe 7 sets... Made it look pretty impressive

I don't think Javi are on a bobcat's menu... ever. Maybe a baby one if there were no rabbits or quail left on earth.

talk about bumper to bumper in that trap!!!

I didn't know anyone still gutted animals? You're supposed to check-in and weigh your animals whole (without the guts) on Ft Huachuca, so I couldn't use the gutless method on my Coues this past year. I will do it if and when I get one off-post.

Where did you get those cool bags that hook up to the LEM??? I have the same grinder and I want those bags! Nice job on the piggies-

How many animals have you harvested in Arizona
Scooter replied to Seldom Drawn's topic in The Campfire
Big Game only??? I got stationed here in the spring of 2011 and since then: 1 Archery Javelina (January 2013) 1 Rifle Coues (December 2013) If you include Predators: 2 bobcats (October of 2011 and September 2013) 4 Foxes (don't remember the dates) 4 Coyotes (also, no dates as they were spread out through the almost 3 year period) -
Every now and then there exists a gun I've been passing over at the gun store for months, and all of a sudden it starts to appeal to me. It's like I feel some sympathy that it's been all alone collecting dust on the rotating display for awhile. So is the case with a certain brand new Savage model 16 in .270WSM stainless with all of the Accu-goodies and a Nikon Prostaff 3x9 BDC on top. I'm not gonna quote the exact price, but let's just say it's mid $500's out the door. This seems like a good deal to me- but the reason I didn't just drop the Santa money on it today is because I know next to nothing about the .270WSM other than the muzzle velocity and that it's a short-fat version of the .270 so here are my questions for the gun guru's out there: Is it a viable cartridge for elk? How does it perform long range (beyond 400yds) and are there good bullets available in .277? What are the best factory loads off the shelf? What kind of barrel life can I expect? How accurate are the Savage 16 series rifles?

Thanks for all of the information guys... Unfortunately- I needed to put new shoes on my H3 last week so I think the 270wsm is gonna have to keep on collecting dust at the gun store.

I have loads worked up for a few different bullets... I have a HAM tag. My deer load is a 240gr XTP mag sabot with 100gr of IMR white hots. I also have had really good groups with the same charge and a 245gr Powerbelt Aerolite- but I'm not sure about terminal effects on PB bullets. I also could buck the inline trend and use my 'ol TC Tree Hawk with 90gr of 777 and a 320gr Maxi Hunter... Decisions decisions...
