  1. You can shoot them from the hip... True story
  2. So I go out for coyotes with my homemade e-caller yesterday morning and I "know for sure" that coyotes are the only legal predator species right now... Made two sets and called in two nice big foxes and a bobcat that was meowing at my caller but I never could quite see it. The foxes came in from over 500 yards away 2 minutes after the call started and I just watched them filter down through the hillside like they were Plinko chips until they got within 60 yards of the caller. They paced back and forth trying to figure out where it was- just dancing there in front of me. I "knew" they weren't legal so it was just cool seeing them so close and so interested. Well, I get back to the truck and look up the reg booklet for when they will be legal and when I found the page in the regs... I said "$#*^%$#@&" very loudly because they opened up August 1st and I just let two fat beauties in their summer colors go. Never did see the bobcat but i would have tried to coax it in had I known... What an idiot I feel like!
  3. Nah, I may not like that you do that trphyhntr- but who the H-E-double hockeysticks am I to tell you how to enjoy the outdoors??? Nobody- that's who! Do what you gotta do and good luck!

    Sitting vs Spot and Stalk

I like spot and stalk. Haven't killed a Coues yet, but it's not because I couldn't stalk within bow range- I have choked on the shot and missed 4 times and never cut a hair... it's torture. if you know me and how many arrows I shoot per week you'd never guess I was worse than Shaq at the foul line when it comes to sealing the deal.

    Opinions on Craigslist problem

I don't use Craigslist anymore to sell anything because of all the scammers on there. One time, a person with horrible spelling and grammar, allegedly studying to be a marine biologist wanted my full name, phone number, email address, and mailing address so he could cut me a check to buy the item for his traveling father-in-law who was leaving for Russia in a month... It was creative, I'll give them credit for that. In your case I would just contact the buyer, tell them you've re-listed the item, and if they still want it held- they need at least another deposit or to be paid in full and picked up.
  8. The guy at the Sportsman's Center was right on the money according to the 2013-2014 Hunt fact sheet for Fort Huachuca. Contractors cannot hunt big game on Ft Huachuca.
  9. Looks like you need to give those on-post spots to someone who is eligible and I happen to know someone off the top of my head that will gladly exchange off post info via PM

    IMR White Hots

Not a big fan of Mr. Wakeman's review- I've read it. I guess if nobody has done it I will have to borrow my buddy's chrono and burn some pellets!!!
  11. I'd say once there's a blind on it and you KNOW you're going to have another hunter there... find another spot because the confrontation and traffic in and out of the area will ruin the hunt. Just find another spot and chalk it up to the other guy found "your" spot because it was findable.
  12. They like to get some warm sun and shake/dry off on the sunny hillsides in the mornings down here if it rained hard overnight... I tend not to hunt them over water in the early season because the waterholes down here get dove hunters all the time. I like to glass them up between feeding and bedding areas.

    face paint

I try to keep the sun out of my face and wear a baseball cap. I also have one of those moisture wicking Redhead masks in black and one in realtree APG.

    Don't Leave Home Without.....

my homemade terry cloth headbands to wear and change out under my hat... Nothing sweats more than my head when I'm out in the early season- The rest of the stuff I have triple redundancy on so even if I forget there's another one in the pack and another in the truck tool boxes
  15. 35A, 34B, and 30B are wide open and green as far as the eye can see... It's gonna work good this season!!!

    unit one wolf

So there are no wolves down here on the Border??? They say specifically in the regs that there are...

    Another noob with questions

The best way to learn how to find Coues is to go outside and find Coues. Literally I have learned more about these gray ghosts by following them than anybody could ever tell me. Get Good optics and a tripod, have a good back and legs to fill good boots, and figure out the wind direction... That's my simple advice. Can't go wrong with that combo.

    new to bow hunting!

In the early season the Russell APX L1 or L2 lightweight gear is pretty nice. I've been using it on the 3D range and scouting this year and I'm very impressed that it has kept me relatively cool.
  19. My archery tag is mid-November, and being a first-time elk hunter I have thought up some questions as I've been talking to people and reading everything I can. I am an experienced hunter and outdoorsman, but I've never taken on a solo hunt for this long... and if successful, with this large of an animal. 1. Do you have to "book" a meat processor near where you hunt? Or do they just have space available because that's what they do every year? 2. How many coolers and what size should they be? How many Game Bags? 3. How much freeze dried food for a 13-day hunt? How much Water? 4. Do some of the hunters go on a bivy hunt or are most of the guys trailer/tent camping? Which do you think is better? 5. How helpful are other hunters as far as getting the meat packed out? I know I'd sure help someone out if I came across them solo hunting out there- am I an anomaly?
  20. I think I'm going to temporarily put it on the bow and get it tuned up to hit with my sights and keep it in reserve for a backup, should my NAP 360 fail (again). That way both rests are good to go in the even they are needed.
  21. I tie them by the hundreds... you need any?

    Quest for a dove

I need to fletch up and throw a couple Snaro 6" points on them arrows and I bet I'll be able to kill one. Might take me a while- but I'll get one with that longbow.
  23. I actually get Field and Stream and they did a "mythbusters" article two months ago where they debunked the WB negative info.
  24. I use a pair of Blackhawk Warrior Wear desert ops boots that have been to Iraq for two tours and are softened up perfectly. The seams are starting to separate and the tread on the soles is almost worn down, but they are light, comfy, and quiet enough to get close to any animal... I keep sealing the seams so that they don't completely fall apart on me... I'd guess they have close to 400-500 miles on them over the past 6 years.

    Camera Theft

The FS is able to cite the owner of the equipment for "damage to a natural resource" if they find any tree or resource damage caused by the bolting, screwing, chaining, or strapping of a camera to a tree... Same goes for blinds, treestands and anything else. They always say, "the owner can have it back right after I write them a $250 ticket for damages caused"... it sucks but that's the game they're playing.
