  1. Yeah, I am now really feeling bad about that- especially since it was clearly only unconscious and freezing cold for about 4-4.5 hours. If it had gotten out of the garage I think it might have made it to the neighbor's feeder and bird bath- that would have been the easy life for that dude! I usually don't care for snapping the heads off- but I will do it every time now!

    Family Strengths

Hey, I've been on here for a couple years and never really knew about this post. I'm Scott (friends call me Scooter) and I am currently stationed in AZ in the military. My past experiences and expertise when I was back home in Western New York are mostly in big box retail management, sales, and purchasing of hunting and fishing equipment. Also, I used to help teach people flyfishing for trout and salmon (casting and basic stream entymology/fly selection), and I can drive the heck out of a forklift. I'm looking towards accomplishing a few things like NRA Instructor Certification and becoming some kind of a gunsmith/bowsmith and/or running an outdoor store someday.

    Might be a crazy question

definitely a good question to ask! Yep- you need all new 2014 paperwork, good luck on your hunts!
  4. I know people who've done this. I believe this is what really keeps the small game vest makers in business!
  5. You know, on more than one occasion, while I've been small game hunting (to include during a big game season) I've had deer very close to me and not spook. I swear they know sometimes that you aren't after them... Back in Texas we had a small group of deer that came up behind our duck blind even while we were hail calling and take a drink, and they were just standing there looking at us in the water with decoys out. I really do believe that they know whether or not they are being hunted.
  6. I hope he takes King Andy with him... NY is such a dang mess right now...
  7. I always pick up the full gallons of water laying in the washes when I run across them... I empty it first of course, so it's lighter. Dang humanitarians.

    Question??

I use the store bought ones. But baking soda would probably work... I've used it to deodorize the truck before
  9. They're already going after a ban on lead shot- why give them a reason to ban non-biodegradable hulls? I bet somebody out there is already cooking up a biodegradable waxed paper hull shotshell with a non-toxic payload and a natural fiber wad... Guess how much a box of those would cost ya!!!
  10. Resurrecting last year's thread because I've been picking up quite a few new red-hulls this year... I shoot yellow hulls- so I know they didn't get there from me! I have no issue leaving an area better than when I got there- but it'd be real nice if no one ever had to do that. Hulls are litter!!! Don't dump your garbage on AZ then call yourself a sportsman!
  11. But can we please get a hot and dry weekend so that the birds can stop drinking from every up-turned leaf and puddle out there to and relocate back to the places and patterns they were on opening weekend???
  12. Okay, I'll settle for cool and dry... But dry would be the operative word. It can rain all it wants after the dove season closes.
  13. BTW- did you bother to grab any of those 6 years worth of hulls on your way out???
  14. Nice! The birds will eventually figure out that being by the roads ain't good for their mortality so your other spot should produce equally as well when Darwin takes over...
  15. I stand by my position. I never called anyone any names, I never said anything derogatory, and I certainly never accused someone of promoting unsafe actions. That was all you guys putting words in there. I just took issue with the lighthearted tone of the whole thing. Somebody said "people need to lighten up", well I couldn't disagree more with that statement. Every time someone has an "accident" with a gun, it's on every news channel. It'd be nice if we all just took the extra half-second and really adopted the safety rules, all of them, and quit arguing about who needs a lecture from who or who needs to "lighten up". Az_shooter, I'm sure you're a great guy, and there's a reason most people wouldn't admit a mistake like this... It's because they know they were wrong and don't really need to hear it from anyone else. Again, I didn't personally attack or call anyone any rude names... I only took issue with the delivery method for the lesson az_shooter wanted to share with folks. Remember guys, when you're out there handling firearms it only takes one tiny little mistake to end a life or multiple lives. Complacency kills. It's a serious message that every hunter and sportsman should reinforce, and I go so far as to take it as my responsibility. I don't care what people think about me, I gave up trying to be popular or worrying about that childish thing long ago.

    Trophy Coons

Been a long time since I've done that! Nice!!! Make a hat or two...
  17. Ya i was kinda thinking a vehicle im traveling in would probably be considered a structure. oh well. Yeah pretty sure that thinking is not correct. Tents and RV's don't count either...
  18. Adam, I appreciate the mediation... but the more I think of it, the more I have a hard time believing that the OP was really trying to educate folks on what can happen when they try to expel a barrel obstruction by firing a live round... This is the post that was in the classifieds: "Wow, if that was a 20 gauge barrel I would jump all over it. Funny story, just happened today to haha. I was out dove hunting with my buddy and we were getting poured on by a massive storm and I accidentally kicked my remington 1100 20 gauge over into the mud and clogged the barrel. Well, out of frustration from being soaking wet and not hitting a single bird all day I pulled the trigger to clear the barrel of what I thought was a little bit of mud. Well, it wasn't a little bit and now I have a nice split barrel to show for my frustrations. It split into three pieces about 5 inches down form the end of the barrel. Nice custom job haha." The terms "funny story" and "haha" several times and a humorous reference to a "custom job" indicate that this might have been a bad joke that nobody else thought was funny. Never once does he say or hint at how serious it could have been, or that he was scared, or that there even was any lesson to learn at all. So that's why I jumped in with the lecture. Because the tone of everything was not equal to the seriousness of what actually happened out there. Again, I'm sorry- but I just feel obligated to get involved when I see stuff like that, I have sort of a complex. I didn't write in anything but utter concern for another hunter, and as I said before I am very glad that this turned out as a property-damage-only incident... even though I've been looking for a Classic wood stocked non-vent rib Rem 1100 in 20 gauge for years and I'm kinda mad that one got ruined!
  19. Great story!!! Tanner- way to go!!! I didn't get to shoot my first dove until the Army sent me to Texas at the young age of 27... NY doesn't allow dove hunting. Keep at it Big Browns crew!!!
  20. I filet the meat off of the breast, then let them soak in salt water overnight. I wash them off and do the jalepeno/pepper jack cheese/bacon wrap thing as mentioned by others and off to the grill they go! This year I'm going to Crock-Pot them in a gumbo or stew... I'll update with pics this weekend I hope.

  23. Alright now, listen, everyone here, including yourself has made a mistake before. I consider myself a very safe outdoorsmen. I put this up for you guys to see what happens and maybe someone will think "hey remember that post, maybe we shouldn't do this." I appreciate your concern for my safety but I don't need the scolding or lecturing bud. Feel free to use the picture for any of your classes you teach but please don't assume I'm an unsafe person, it was a mistake and no one was even remotely harmed. I won't ever do this again and it's called experience bud, some people get it in different ways. Sorry, I know that it was lecturing in a pretty condescending way... I wasn't trying to be rude. Here's my main issue: The tone of your OP (and the one in the classifieds) was pretty lighthearted about an incident that easily could have taken out you or your friends. You also rationalized it by saying you overlooked safe practices because you were very frustrated. If you are getting so frustrated out there that you can't think and act safe 100% of the time- you may need to relook some things. The whole post was kind of "haha, look what happened" instead of your previously stated intent of "don't make the same mistake as me". Again, I do apologize for scolding. Everyone does make mistakes, and you certainly have to agree that some have more dire consequences than others- right? Your "experience" could have easily ended up putting a 7/8oz load of #8's and other jagged pieces of shrapnel into another human being. To some of us "lame internet forum safety rangers" that's a pretty serious error in judgement. You had to kind of expect that some people would react the way I did when you posted this, right? Shake it off, my friend. Everyone gets their pride hurt once in awhile. You've learned the lesson the hard way, but certainly not the hardest way. The fact that nobody was hurt is not and should never be the main takeaway from this... only the best-case scenario. Best of luck, and I hope the next picture you post is a whole bunch of birds laying on a tailgate!!!
