Either a biscuit, or go old school with a NAP Quicktune or a Golden Key/Futura TM hunter rest.

I would not have hesitated to remind him just how close he was. That meets the criteria for defensive display at the very least... -
What does the Fox say
Scooter replied to Non-Typical Solutions's topic in Predator Hunting and Trapping
the foxes I've seen don't say too much, after the bang. -
If it's got a cable guard and a window cut in the riser- it has plenty enough center shot clearance. Throw a biscuit on there and you'll never look back!

I use the plano Bone Collector Case when I fly back to NY. It's strong and durable- but It's HUGE!!! doesn't fit flat in the back of my SUV.

I'd use the good old 2117's off of that bow using a whisker biscuit for a rest and any quality-made razor sharp 125gr two-blade on the market!!! Some people forget that we used to kill lots of animals with older "obsolete" technology just ten or fifteen years ago. Those old bows are still lethal today, just like they were when they were state of the art archery equipment. I'd avoid using Blazer vanes on aluminum arrows- get some 4" feathers and you'll be a lot better off. That's just an opinion, but I always had better luck shooting feathers off of my old Bear Whitetail II.

Heavy game vests yesterday (no pics)
Scooter replied to Scooter's topic in Small Game, Upland Bird, and Waterfowl Hunting
Big Browns- After riding in the back of a game vest, nothing looked pretty enough for a trophy picture... Maybe a nice food picture when I cook some up for dinner would suffice? -
One you start trying lethal shots beyond 300yds, you really need to spend some serious $$$ on a top-name scope. There's just no getting around it. When you say "cheap scope" is that like a Tasco or Simmons cheap? Or Wal Mart Chinese NC STAR junk cheap?

Well, I think new brass will help out, but why not try to smooth out the chamber anyway??? Can't hurt and sounds pretty easy for a competent 'smithy

3 1/4 ammo in a 2 3/4 gun?
Scooter replied to muledeerarea33?'s topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
3 1/4 is referring to the dram equivalent of powder... Even though the spent hulls are longer it matters not. As long as they are 2 3/4" or somewhere near it (shotshells are rarely 2.75" on the dot) you'll be good to go. I've never seen any estate shotgun ammo in the 3" or 3.5" magnums... I know they make them, but nobody really carries them. If you want to see freaky spent hulls, buy a box of the Federal paper hull target loads... Blast from the past right there! -
Most awesome! Usually when they bust ya, it's game over- but once in awhile you score!

I always try to set up on a quartering or crossing wind in my favor... Facing sort of downwind. I use a Turkey vest that has a swing out pad to sit on... and usually sit on the ground near a tree or bush to use as a backrest. I'm gonna go yard sale-ing and find a wooden stepladder to customize as a predpod. For cover scent- I use dirt. Seriously, fresh dirt or dust right near my spot.

Having issues using mouth calls and being ready for the shot. I hunt alone mostly and I've been "jammed" on two dogs now, both within 30 yards of me upwind just over my right shoulder. I couldn't swing on them or switch to lefty before they got into the thick brush... and I know I darn sure can't just sit out in the wide open field that I keep in front of me and get them to come in... How do you mouth callers work your setups so you don't get jammed by coyotes coming in upwind and danger close?

I regret in my younger years selling my Marlin 25MN .22mag. I was so good with that rifle I could put holes in empty .22mag brass at 50 yards every time! Traded it for a single shot slug gun for some reason, then sold the stupid slug gun for some beer money. I saved up enough to buy another Marlin 25MN a year later, and then ended up selling that one for beer money too. They don't make them anymore so I'm out of luck. I saw one at the range last year and just stood there watching the guy shoot it. I regret not having that rifle anymore- I'm older and wiser now and I take the advice of an old guy who once told me "NEVER sell your guns or your tuxedo, 'cause you never know when you're gonna wish you still had either one in your closet".

find a resident group of does with fawns and you stay on them throughout the fall. Pattern the does and the boys will follow when it kicks in.

that was hilarious, but isn't there a Politics thread on CWT???

I've posted two stories on here in the past when I've been literally within feet of a bobcat I called in... This is why I didn't like either of those encounters! Does anybody know the hunters involved? http://pvtrib.com/main.asp?SectionID=1&SubSectionID=761&ArticleID=59358

It's not having a poor quality or dull knife that is the problem, it's that if I only carry that one quality knife- and somehow forget to pack, drop, lose, or break that one quality knife... I am then knifeless. I do actually carry decent quality knives, three of them.

The 3.5" is certainly not for the faint of heart- but is an invaluable tool for getting a big ol' tom turkey on the ground... It only takes one shot normally (plus patterning shots before the season) so the recoil will not be a factor as much as if you were using them for geese or ducks and doing a lot of shooting. Turkeys- that's the only time I'd use a 3.5" and I wouldn't worry about it when using good shotgun shooting form.

Looks like it's up to the individual airlines, and we all know how knowledgeable those ticket-counter folks are!!! From the TSA site: Small arms ammunition, including ammunition up to .75 caliber and shotgun shells of any gauge- Check with your airline or travel agent to see if ammunition is permitted in checked baggage on the airline you are flying. Small arms ammunitions for personal use must be securely packaged in fiber, wood or metal boxes or other packaging specifically designed to carry small amounts of ammunition. Ask about limitations or fees, if any, that apply.

...and that's why I love CWT.com right there. I never would have though of that! Get a cheap stepladder and rig it for calling, heck I bet I could even bolt a lightweight boat seat on there with a swivel if I got creative!
-
Nah- even for me that seems too complicated running two calls. Good idea though! Maybe one of the decoys that squeaks will do the trick...
