    AR-15 for predator hunting

I use a Hornady 55gr SP... At ~2850fps it is mild, but does pretty well out of my single shot 1:10 twist. Haven't torn one up yet that couldn't be repaired.

    Lost rights to possess firearms.....

Ok I've seen it twice now... Just because there is no NICS check for ML's does NOT automatically mean that a person who has lost their rights can own one. It may be legal on a federal level, but depending on what the legal paperwork says- many times they are also prohibited from posessing any destructive device. Think about it... What would you get charged with if you robbed a store with a bow, crossbow, cap and ball pistol or a muzzleloader??? That's considered a deadly weapon in that situation, so they also include language in prohibitions that covers big knives, bows, crossbows, and black powder guns. Sometimes. Please do not think just because you can grab a ML off the shelf that it is legal for anyone to posess it. Somebody will end up in trouble. Go through the court documents and legal paperwork with a competent attorney and stay out of further trouble.
  5. Was behind you heading south through SV today... That's a sweet huntwagon!!!

    Lost rights to possess firearms.....

That's the federal info... Must check state and local laws as well. Normally, they run right in line with federal- but I've seen bows and muzzleloaders lumped into "destructive devices" categories in state law before. Just be careful and good luck on the hunt!!!

    First time calling

I don't really use my e-caller much anymore, but with my mouth calls I call for 1-2 minutes real intense loud and fast distress-type sounds, wait 30 seconds or so and sort of give that "tired out and dying" weaker sound for another minute or so. I just repeat that sequence four or five times- then move. Foxes always come right in... In fact- I've stopped shooting them because I could get one almost every time I go out. Not every set, but if I stay long enough and keep calling, a fox will show up. The best shell for those is a turkey load from my 835. I think I'm gonna buy a .22mag and sell some fur! The coyotes have been eluding me a little bit. When they come in, it's been close enough for shotgun, but I've been blowing the call so one hand was busy and I couldn't close the deal in time.

It was an adventure... Weathered out.

You know what really burns me up??? I checked weather reports dating back to 2009 and no rain. No snow. But when I get a chance to hunt, right when things get interesting, BAM! haha. Welcome to Scooter's life.
  9. Got weathered out of my hunt... Just when I was starting to figure it out we get record rainfall!!! Had to bail out of there quick or else get stuck in there for a week! Good luck rifle hunters!

    Lost rights to possess firearms.....

There are times when these prohibitions do include "destructive devices" like compound bows, crossbows, swords, knives, and black powder firearms/muzzleloaders. To be sure, check the language with a lawyer. It could land him in prison, and whoever supplied the firearm would be in jeopardy of catching a "transferring to a prohibited person" charge.
  11. An SKB would be a fantastic choice. I have an old Ithaca/SKB 500 in 20ga. and it is awesome.

It was an adventure... Weathered out.

The Army is moving me this spring, this was my only chance for a long while, but I'll be back- it's on my bucket list! No thanks necessary... I love what I do and the people I do it for. Good luck- now I'm at full speed ahead for my deer hunt in December

    22n late hunt

It goes until thanksgiving but I bailed out friday morning ahead of the weather... All I can say is that it should be relatively straight forward for the rifle hunters if they can shoot comfortably out to 350yds and know their way around binoculars and a spotting scope. Then... Better have a sharp machete because that's what you'll need to chop a path to the bull you dropped!

It was an adventure... Weathered out.

Mark, that stalk took me two hours. It was so thick and there was really no way to get up to them after that first draw. I tried breaking through but they figured out that I wasn't an elk busting all those branches so they just eased over the ridge and disappeared. When I finally got back up the hill I was wet and cold- exhausted from bushwhacking through all that red stuff. I glassed for you about 15mins but had no clue how far you'd gotten at that point. I went back up for dry clothes and lunch, came back out and your truck was still there. At some point of me glassing- I think I heard you load up and drive off. I saw some coming back out at 4:30 or so, but WAY up and to the right past the steps. It was awesome meeting you too- and you are a true gentleman for being okay with me sharing that vantage point. Good luck with the rest of the hunt... My camp flooded and my gear was wrecked and had no way to dry and clean it all up with the snow coming so I bailed. Good luck!

It was an adventure... Weathered out.

The area west of strawberry and pine got soaked good thursday and friday, and I'm pretty sure there's a few RV's/ trailers that will be stuck up there for a few days whether they mind or not. The hunt lasts to Thanksgiving so the guys who were staying the whole hunt will probably be fine but if you wanted to leave you had to boogie on Friday morning or you were stuck.

    22n late hunt

Just spent 8 days chasing them on the archery hunt... Roads are really bad right now. Should dry up next week. Regardless of the rain- glass up high. It is a lot of miles on the boots, but it should be fairly straight forward with a rifle.
  19. Yeah, cold in this tent that's for sure. Thank heaven for handwarmers. I did not see an elk today, lots of sign, but no elk. I maybe should have re-thought doing this alone...

What do you guys think about scent control

Those products do work, but it all depends on whether or not the animals are conditioned to human pressure or not. I will agree that you dont need it if you get the wind right... But there have been lots of times I've been sitting against a tree and had deer come up to me straight downwind and never bat an eye. But there's also times when I don't spray down, shower, or wear Scent Lok and a coyote comes in from hundreds of yards away straight downwind of me calling and doesn't figure out that I'm there until it's in easy shotgun range... I use Sport Wash to launder my hunting clothes, for two reasons. One, it really cleans them well and rinses completely without damage the waterproof and wicking material, and two- because it does not have UV brighteners and I do believe certain animals can see within that spectrum.
