Another interesting fact about jags is that in the jungle thay are more prolific yet smaller and darker in color. The more north, in more moderate climate, they are paler and larger. Our Arizona jags are big awesome animals. Mike

Coues densities in 24A, then and now
Rembrant replied to bowsniper's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
Mr Sniper, I like your attitude. Where do you call home? Mike -
I don't doubt what Lark is saying about the anti's wanting to go overboard. That's what they do best. What I have read, is that a multi-agency group is meeting periodically to try a figure if there are certain "corridors" that the big cats may be using to get in and out of the state - and then try to hold off progress in those corridors. You guy's theory, I think, is pretty good. They've probably been here all along, and at about the same numbers. This fringe population will likely always need a connection with Mexico to sustain. Good thing Phoenix ain't sprawled along the border. Mike

This'll sound like a Lark story, except I ain't making it up. Was archery cow hunting in a secret unit once when I got ahead of a couple of bulls that were fighting. Accidentally found myself in the path of a big Imperial (7 point) bull. He was gonna walk around a tree and see me at about 8 yards, do the whirle-around thing and bolt. I braced myself for the experience. He walks around the tree, does not see me, and continues towards me. I must of been doing a good job of hiding behind my bow, 'cause he don't see me. As he reaches the invisible line of where I just walked through, he slams on the breaks, stands there and stares at me at about 2 yards. If I were to extend my arm with an arrow in my hand, I could'a touched his nose. We had a stare-down for about 2 minutes. That's a long time to be under extreme stress. At one point, I thought I heard another elk coming, so I rolled my eyes to the left - nothing there - so I roll my eyes back. That bull stretched his neck towards me trying to figure out why the stump he was standing next to had eyeballs. I prayed to God - thanking Him for the experience, and then asking Him to make the bull go away! The bull finally decided that I was a tree (because humans can never get that close to him), and turned again so that he would actually walk closer to me as he left. His left antler passed by my head at about 18". I was thinking about slapping his butt as he passed, but then decided that since I wasn't done raisin' kids, maybe I'd better not. From what I'm reading in this string, that was probably a good choice. Mike -
Oh, way to go BullW. Now nobody will take my advise. And after all of this work of instilling awe into the hearts of the unlearned. Mike

Come on Lark, you know there aren't any big whitetail bucks in unit 23! And if there was a 24" coues buck in that sorry unit, I would need a highlighted map or GPS coordinates so's I could go there and prove it to myself. In fact, I wouldn't mind... I mean I would need to see those hunerd classers too. Seeing's believing. Mike

J-Rod, Are you one of those people that thinks you gotta hunt pines to kill an elk? By all means go lower, in fact start as low as you can, and work up from there. Start down there where a lot of folks call "winter range". It's not. Mike

Lark, Did you find your class ring in the bee hive? Mike

Coues Whitetail .Com Record book

Let's voluteer Amanda since she's out of town and can't protest. Mike -
I looked at this new site. It looks to be an overall WT site and not specifically to the Couse Deer. What we have at Cousewhitetail.com is special, primarily with a biologist like Amanda at the helm. whitetailforum .com could be a good site to look into from time to time , as it grows, to glean some eastern whitetail hunting tactics from. Wherever that place is in the picture with the dead deer - sure is green! Mike

Outdoor Life Network(OLN) Coues show

Heck, Josh, if you're gonna be 'Deer Huntin' Bubba' on an outdoor show - you gotta look the part! Good Job! Mike -
I have a buddy who has hunted British Columbia. The out fitter asked him, "You folks in Arizona are trying to put wolves BACK into the state???! Heck, we can't kill em out! - Different perspective. Mike

I caught the end of a news story last night that said Rick Renzi has proposed to the Senate that Arizona be removed from the 9th District Court (the one based in San Francisco that ruled that the 10% non-resident cap was unconstitutional), and be joined to the 12th District Court with other western states like Nevada, Idaho, and Montana. Renzi said this would align us with other states that have similar western issues. This is a big deal, and I think a good deal. Anybody know anything else about this?? Mike
-
Yep, Renzi's the man. The bottom line for me is values. Biblical values. I can't vote for a president, senator, or congressman that thinks it's OK for babies to have their brains sucked out as they are born, or for children to grow up in a home with a mommy and a mommy or a daddy and a daddy - and call it marraige. I think the greatest way to protect this country is to conduct our affairs in a way that honors God. The reason ferrets and condors are in Arizona is because they were here before modern civilization and the habitat is still deemed suitable for their continued existance. The wolves were here too (or was it a slightly different kind?), but I'm not so sure that modern Arizona is suitable for their continued existance. I'm all in favor for hanging on to all the endangered species, yet common sense must prevail. What Renzi is trying to do with Arizona and the 12th District Court is a big significant thing, that we will look back on for decades and appreciate. If this thing happens, would it be great if the 12th district court reversed the decision about the 10% non-resident cap? Mike
-
Yeah, me too Lark! Lots of experiences. And my mind is like a steel trap; everything that goes in there, gets mangled. Mike
-
Sounds like you got your money's worth on that elk hunt Amanda. Hunting rutting bulls is quite an experience. Good job on the passing up of the smaller bulls. Mike
-
Lark, I'm beginning to suspect that you are just making some of this stuff up. Case in point: There is no such thing as a "Mexican Jumping Snake", though the rest of the story sounds about right. Mike
-
Now that's a crying shame! Take a unit where a deer is a rareity and somebody's got to go and kill what could be the very last buck. If fact, that deer (if this story is true), probably walked in from another unit, because back when unit 23 had a couple o' deer in it - the bucks were dinky! I feel real sorry for any poor soul that has a unit 23 tag! Mike
-
I apologize for the misspelling, Lark. Hey, hows come you know the correct spelling for a movie you aint seent??! Mike
