Wanted to say thank you to all who have given me advice over last year or so. Took me long enough but I finally got my first dog down on Friday morning. It was pretty exciting. Set up on a field with a tree line about 400 yards away. Turned on a howl on the foxpro and immediately I heard yipping and a howl back. One came out of the trees and sat down down. He kept looking back into the trees and after 30 seconds or so it ran back in. I was disappointed for a second until I saw another one about 30 yards to the right. As I'm watching that one, two more come out followed by another 5!! I had 8 coyotes sitting about 400 yards out. They weren't coming in, just sitting there and pacing. Switched to a different howl and they all came trotting in and stopped again about 200 yards away. They started to fan out and two started to circle behind me. Started getting worried that they would bust me so I swtiched to a challenge bark. That did the trick and 3 of them came running in and stopped about 100 yards. I was shaking so much I could hardly keep the crosshairs on her. I shot and didn't see her drop, I could only see the rest of them running away. I took a few shots as they were running but no luck. Went out to check for blood and found the one I shot at first dead in her tracks! Went to my other stand and did the same thing. Had one sneak in on my left at about 75 yards but by the time I got the gun over there it was in the brush and never came back out! I was hooked before, but needless to say I am more hooked than ever now!

haha!! you are right... the fish was 35#. I called her in with a female howl... If I head back out there, does anyone have any recommendation on a different call to use? I've called this spot a few times before with cottontail distress and pup distress with no luck.

pretty new to coyote hunting - maybe been going a year or so. finally getting the hang of it a little i think - the last three trips out i've had success in calling some in. still no yotes down though lol. my question is what to do when I spot one coming in? saturday morning we spotted two trotting in while the call was still running. they stopped at about 300 yards out. not comfortable with that shot yet and didn't know what to do so i muted the call. couple seconds later they turned and started trotting away. I turned the call back on but they didn't come back... should i have let the call keep running or done something else different? wind was good and we were pretty well camouflaged so i don't think they spotted or smelled us although i know it's possible. all i know is I'm freaking hooked now and wanan drop one!! and don't ask me about the 140yd I missed last month that one still stings!! thanks for any tips!!

A couple months ago I bought a Remington 700 SPS 300 win mag for my elk hunt in December. Just took it out this weekend for the first time to sight it in. I cleaned and oiled it before I went out. I put a few rounds in and loaded the first one, gun fired great. When I tried to pull the bolt back to eject the round, it wouldn't come back. After jiggling and muscling it, it finally came back and ejected the round. Same thing happened on round 2 - bolt got stuck but eventually let loose and ejected it. I thought maybe it just needed some breaking in and would eventually get smoother. On the third shot, of course the bolt wouldn't come back again except this time when it finally let loose, it would not pull the spent round out of the chamber. I repeatedly opened and closed the bolt and it would not pull that round out. I used a rod to poke the round out and tried it again. Still would not pull the round out and bolt was tough to get back. Tried it one more time and it would not pull the fired round out. The bolt moves smooth as can be with no ammunition in the gun and cycles live rounds just fine. For some reason, after I fire it, the bolt doesn't want to come back and it won't pull spent rounds out. I looked at the brass from the fired rounds and didn't notice anything abnormal. Any ideas on what could be wrong and anything I can do to fix it?? It's under warranty so I can send it in for free it's just really frustrating spending over 1200 on the combo and it doesn't function!

Been out to Bartlett a few nights in the past month goin after crappie and flatheads. Done decent on crappie but the flatheads are givin me trouble. Finally hooked into one that felt pretty decent last Monday and it popped my 30# braid. I think he got it wrapped around a rock by the look of the line when I got it up. With the new moon coming on thursday I want to get back out there. Been fishing under a light in about 15 ft of water. Shad have been pretty abundant. Crappie nail the shad and use live blue gill for the flattys. I'm over the crappie though and want to land a monster flathead. I've done a bit of reading and I see the phrase "deep pools" with no current quite a bit. What is considered a deep pool in a lake like Bartlett that is over 100ft deep? Any tips on structure to look for and what depth to fish? I've been anchoring around the mouths of coves. Any tips would be appreciated!

Three weeks ago I bought my first boat, 14ft Alumacraft with a 1974 Mercury 9.8hp 2 stroke. Took the boat out 4 times with no issues, motor ran great. This morning I went out to Saguaro and putted around for 4-5 hours no problem. On the way back to the ramp, throttle wide open, all of a sudden the engine revved like crazy and stopped propelling. Killed it and took the cover off to have a look (for what I'm not sure since I know nothing about outboards). Didn't notice anything funny. Gave it a pull and it started first pull. Put it in gear and gave a little gas and with the throttle barely open, the RPMs were through the roof and the boat barely moved. I've done a little research and it sounds like a possible spun prop? I was in the middle of the lake when it happened so I didn't hit any rocks and didn't notice any debris in the water. Any thoughts or ideas what it could be? I'm hoping it's not too expensive as I'm on a limited college student budget - hence I bought an older boat to begin with lol... maybe that was my first mistake! Called a couple service shops today and both said they won't work on a motor that old. I live in Chandler, anyone know of any good shops I could have take a look at it? Thanks for any help!

Hi everyone, Got home last night and took the prop off today. Something is definitely not right. Looks like a bunch of coffee grounds in the prop. The hub is completely shredded. Is this normal for a simple spun prop or is mine just that dried out and old? Plan on taking it in this week. Would it be necessary to take the whole motor in or just the prop?

I am able to spin the prop when I put it in gear with the motor off, although it makes a clicking noise... not sure if that's normal or not. And yes, it did the same thing in forward and reverse today while it was running. I will have pull the prop off tomorrow morning and have a look. Thanks for the response!

I have been kayak fishing the salt river for a couple years now and have had very good luck with the bass. I am taking a friend with me this weekend and he wants to target the trout. I have been able to snag a couple trout on cranks while bass fishing.. but I have never fished a river specifically for trout before and was hoping for a few tips! I have done some research and it sounds like nightcrawlers on gang hooks is a good option. I was planning on beaching the yaks near the rapids and floating the worms through the rapids. Has anyone had any success with trout in the salt? I have caught plenty up in the white mountains but the current in the river throws me off. Is there anything I should look for as far a spot to fish or any techniques you guys recommend?

Wrapping the livers in a piece of nylon webbing or piece of nylon stockings then running a hook through the whole mess, keeps the livers on the hook pretty well. Lee I've tried the nylon and it works decent but you can't beat Atlas Mike's Spawn Nets! Recommend the 4" roll it holds a nice fat piece of liver. Grab some Magic Thread as well to tie em up, never need to tie a knot. Rarely lose my liver off the hook and fish can't feel it. Cheap too. I live in Chandler and am pretty new to coyote hunting. I've been out a few times with no luck. I have tried off the 87 near highway 188 and off the 79 on 96 ranch road. Saw some deer at both locations but no yotes. I have been told that these areas receive a lot of pressure but people are (understandably) reluctant to share other locations that aren't hunted as often. Not looking to steal anyone's honey hole but would anyone be willing to point me in some directions that see less pressure? Just invested in a nice .223 and want to drop something Thanks in advance for any help!

Well I wasn't able to call anything in this morning but I did see about 6 or 7 mulies trotting through which was cool. As I was leaving I met the rancher and he gave me some good tips! He said they are everywhere out there and told me to come out there whenever I can. Thanks for the help nosajpo!

Ahh great idea! Thanks so much for the advice! I was planning on putting in for rifle javelina... never even noticed the dates of the archery hunt! That will be perfect

This summer I invested in a bow and have been shooting several times a week zeroing my shot in! I am trying to start planning a hunt this January for over the counter deer and javelina. I have read several stories about people getting both in one day! While I know it is unlikely for this to happen I was just wondering if anyone would give me some insight on where to start scouting. It seems like the only javelina tags are in units that are mostly in city limits while units for deer are much more abundant. I have been eying 26M in North Scottsdale area near where I quail hunt as I've seen lots of javelina activity there. Is it worth my while to try to go after both or should I stick to deer and get out in the desert away from town a bit more? Any info would be much appreciated as I am new to the archery game! Thanks!
