Could be some value for all of us readers for future applications if we can help sort out what transpired.

Don't you just hate that when that happens?

Yes last year was a very unique year. Best horn quality I have witnessed in 40 years and like you say the most action also realized the first week of the hunt (rather than the second week). Hoping for still above average horn quality this year but the grasses have not come in like last year and the precipitation was not as timely in the spring.

I'll be returning to Alpine next week and be there most of the time up thru the hunts. Will be on the lookout for your bull. Keep us posted if you should find him.

I have only put in for coues deer the last 20 years or so because the mulies have become almost extinct in both units #1 and #27. There are pockets of higher concentrations but I truly would feel guilty shooting one as few as there are now. If you pick unit #27 you will have to hunt real low where the better populations reside. Of course hunter pressure will be much greater in those areas as most hunters know what is being shared here. I'd recommend trying other units than those two for a chance at a better muly hunting experience.

Health insurance premiums to soar 100%-400%
Alpinebullwinkle replied to AZ8's topic in Political Discussions related to hunting
My premium already went up 68% the year Obamacare was passed. As a result we had to drop our second insurance carrier. I used to complain about 15% annual inflation of premiums under Bush. I'm ready to go back to those "good ole days". From what I am hearing from relatives back in NY we are coming to a "day of reconning" soon (when Obamacare is fully implemented). This will get ugly and be one of the biggest news stories within the next 12 months. -
That is the best 3rd I can recall ever seeing. Care to say what unit you found the horns in? Just curious if in the unit I spend the most time in....unit #27

Question of the Day
Alpinebullwinkle replied to Non-Typical Solutions's topic in Political Discussions related to hunting
Russia cautions the US that we may have a bad terrorist living amongst us. FBI investigates and "apparently" finds no evidence. Terrorists act to the surprise of the FBI, all their relatives and pals yet now we hear after checking terrorists computer use that they were viewing many U-tube terrorist pieces and other "bad" sites. How come the FBI was not monitoring these suspects closer after they were alerted??? Thought our government could be counted on to keep us safe. Sounds to me that Janet Napolitano has some "splanin" to do and just might be prudent to step down from her job. Our "dividor-in-chief" also has some "splanin" to do to the public. Maybe his divisive demeaner is not helpful to those marginal residents of our country that are so easily influenced.........you suppose? As most recognize....... our country is in deep trouble with such weak leadership we currently have. -
Question of the Day
Alpinebullwinkle replied to Non-Typical Solutions's topic in Political Discussions related to hunting
CNN reporting "it's over" yet FOX reporting (responsibly) questioning ties to other organizations and what might come next. Amazing how irresponsible CNN and other left wing news stations truly are. They are part of our problems in this nation! -
"I hope we can get a few more rains in the new month" Ask and you shall receive. We have had a blizzard in Alpine for about the last 3 hours. The snow is not sticking but the precipitation is very timely. Another great start to unusually good horn quality this year!

San Carlos January Bull Elk Hunt???????
Alpinebullwinkle replied to Big Browns's topic in Elk Hunting
I hunted it about 5 years ago with three other buddies. It is a tough hunt and toughest on vehicles but I still really enjoyed it. You have to be well prepared both vehicle and equipment wise for this tough hunt. My buddies shot two 320 class bulls the first day. I trophy hunted and ended up skunked (we only stayed the first 5 days while hunting only about 2-1/2 of those days). The 3rd day we had a 24" snowfall and spent the next three days making car repairs and winching out of the snow. It was too muddy down low where I knew the monster bulls would be so my only regret is I never gained access to where I suspected my bull to be. Still a blast if you do not have a tag but expensive hunt to participate on. You end up taking a leap of faith on the weather. -
Can you share where you retrieved this information?

With 6 weeks of growth remaining I'm surprised with the low estimates. The G3's are the most impressive to me. He does have a slightly short main beam at this stage but still think he would grow out to 390+

Sounds like from all the responses (thanks) that the hunter safety point has not had the same impact with other applicants as it seems to have logistically with my family members.......maybe just an anomaly for us.

I have admittedly been ridiculously lucky drawing 19 bull tags in the last 40 years of applications. Better than anyone I know (no tag the last two years though). In contrast my brother has been equally unfortunate and drawn only 4 resident bull tags in the same 40 years. Additionally I have been keeping family and close hunting buddy statistics on the draw for all those years and noticed that those in our circle that do not have a hunter safety bonus point draw a considerably lower percentage of the time (my brother has the lowest percentage and no hunter safety). Has anyone else noticed the same phenomenon with those with hunter safety drawing success better than those without? It almost seems to me (from our statistics) like the hunter safety bonus point counts more than 1-point equal value in the selection process? Additionally I have had a statistician investigate opportunities to tighten up the bell curve which would maintain the integrity of the current process by keeping the element of luck to draw every year, but also making it more fair with the bonus point impact. For some reason that has never been explained to me why AGFD is not interested to enhance the process accordingly. Maybe because many hunters favor the current system of mostly luck and minimal bonus point impact. Seems like an enhanced system with slightly less luck and more bonus point impact would be desirable to all but for some reason it apparently is not. This comes up every year this time but without more interest there likely will be no favorable changes. Food for thought and maybe more discussion.

Enjoy your scouting trips in July (to learn the country better) but don't expect a static situation. The bulls will begin to move fairly good distances as soon as they start rubbing their velvet off about August 7. If you are bull hunting the best way to add value scouting is to look for large herds of cows. For some reason those cows become a magnet starting mid August. Good luck!

The aerial seeding started to come back in about a week ago. Not supposed to be as much grow back in this year but will be interesting to see. I have a good buddy that I'll be helping that drew the 27 archery bull tag with only 3 bonus points. The rest of the family struck out with many more points. Go figure!

I guided a hunter from Pennsylvania last year during the archery #27 hunt. The horn quality was the greatest I had seen in 40 years. We got into a few herds with bulls in the +400 class. After flinging his crooked arrows at 5 different bulls my hunter finally harvested a 9x7 that scored 382. Congrats to all that were lucky enough to draw a tag this year. Hopefully the horn quality will be equally as good as last year. We will need precipitation within the next two weeks for that to ocur.

All the previous posts on right on. Very true that everything has changed since the fire...... all the behaviors both prior to the hunt and also during the rut. During the hunt the last two years it seems the herds push significantly more due to the hunting pressure and less cover areas now available due to the fire. If you know the area or have someone that does know the area real well it is a big advantage. You then can benefit from all the hunting pressure and others efforts (moreso than prior to the fire).

I've heard the same thing from my buddy that owns a home in Idaho that the wolves are having their way with the elk herds and the numbers are declining significantly........elk that is!

RESULTS!! I GOT MINE #3001!!!!!how about you?
Alpinebullwinkle replied to Xman2000's topic in Elk Hunting
How ironic would that be if the results came out on "April Fools Day" ? -

Arizona Commissioners Elk Tag Sells for $385,000
Alpinebullwinkle replied to rthrbhntng's topic in Elk Hunting
For that kind of $$$ the big bulls better be on the look out for drones in the sky overhead (scouting). If they should see one they best move on to more dense country!! -
Have You Had Enough Yet?
Alpinebullwinkle posted a topic in Political Discussions related to hunting
McCain made a fatal mistake to fall into Obama's trap that the economic crash was all Bushes fault. Truth is yes Bush was in charge and must be held accountable but both parties were in charge with Democrats the majority when the crash ocurred. Not challenging Obama's blame game cost McCain a chance at the presidency and also sunk Romney. Obama has recently crossed the line of being respectful of the opposite party and is now calling Republicans dumb. Maybe they just are since they are not challenging the "dividor in chief". Republicans need to become more outspoken and give the president as much respect back as he is giving them. I'm am getting very frustrated at my Republican Party for allowing the dividor in chief to continue his lies and disrespect. We need Republican leaders with a backbone!! -
Then I guess these poor elk have short lifespan probability unfortunately.
