Who's Not Afraid to Hunt Down South?
srfrost45 replied to John O's topic in Bowhunting for Coues Deer
I use to work for CBP and am still in contact with allot of my buddies I used to work with specifically in 36B and 36A. When I worked there we would always have situations with hunters from 3 points all the way down to the POE (port of entry) Sasabee. This is a main cooridor. Plenty of country and ranches for them to cross. Arivaca lake and Buenos aires are always busy with foot traffic. Most of these groups have coyotes and are being led by experienced people and want to avoid you. While working down their it was a common occurance for spotters to be on the MX side glassing and leading groups through the area to avoid BP. trust me, they dont want to have contact with anyone but if they do they usually will keep to themselves. CBP agents are always outnumbered so keep there # in your phone or mark on your GOS where you saw them and report it. I love hunting 36B but the amount of trash the aliens are leaving behind makes me sick. My suggestion is to go in from I19 into the Tumacacori's. Still illegals but more rugged and less traveled by illegals. -
I know allot of people that hunt 36b and go to the buenos aires refuge area but dont discount the other side if the mountain off the I-19 near Tubac. This is some rough country but definitely not as heavily populated with hunters, Kots of good camping and lots of deer. The tumacacori mountain range is a beautiful spot. Be physucally prepared for a hard hunt and to see some illegals.

Pine mountain wilderness

just there for a bear hunt. Lots of good country but gets hunted hard. we saw tones of people hunting and recreational camping. It is a big area with some rugged country. I wouldnt hunt it unless I scouted it for awhile due to the fact that it is so large. There are deer there but i did not see anything amazing and I glassed for 3 days. -
Bucks dont really care about the water because they are chasing dies, However does will go to water so its not always a bad idea if you sit water in a blind. My advice is get out now and start with the salt and put it near water tor along trails you know deer are using based off of sign or trail cam pics. What allot of people dont know if what you can use to attract bucks to an area. Go to the forum under coues deer hunting and find the topic "what is considered baiting" and you will get a clear answer from the AZGFD. you can use artificial attractants and coverscents as lng as they dont contain any pure doe urine. Another strategy is to get on a ridge for a good vantage point and glass your butt of.

Chief Wakeling, Thank you for your assistance. I think the regs are pretty stright forward but in our desire to abide by the laws I just wanted to double check. I had heard some differring opinions from others but even called the AZGFD office for info and was still kind of confused. This is a perfect direct answer and we appreciate your time and assistance.

I am not worried about the salt. I think the regs are pretty clear you can use that and water. My only question is about the cervid urine. If it is synthetic cervid urine then it technically desnt contain any cervid urine. The guy I spoke to said any natural cervid urine or lure was illegal but synthetic was okay. I guess I need to call back and do as you did and get a name and badge number or the field officer. I actually have a AZGFD Warden in my neighborhood so I will check with him too.

Called AZGFD and they said they were aware of the Elk in the area I took pics from but they dont have any plans on issuing any OTC tags there yet. The guy did mention that they will be openning up some portions of unit 21 in the near future.

Has anyone seen this??
srfrost45 replied to Webber's topic in Political Discussions related to hunting
This law is a joke as well as all off dems and reps that voted for it. Elections have consequences and we are reaping what we sowed. At least I van go to bed at night knowing I didn't vote for Obama. Something to be said about a president who will negotiate with terrorists but not people from across the aisle. -
Talked to a local near where my cameras are and he said he has been seeing them this low for years. Definitely keepin these cards close to the vest.

Checked my Cams today! Coues and Lion!!
srfrost45 replied to double lunger14's topic in Trail Cameras
My first year for cameras too. It truly is addicting. If you want to make some extra cash you can contact the lion hunting guides an tell them you got pics of a lion. I know one that pays for info that results in a harvest. Added bonus is they let you tag along -
Great pics. Thanks for sharing

I will have to look into it. Thanks for the idea.

A wise man once told me, "buy nice or buy twice!" The other option is to trade your wife in for one that hunts lol. I know all too well about a wife that doesn't understand our hunting needs/purchases. My garage has a few hidden gems I hope I never have to explain:)

Glad to see the family getting involved. Love takin my boys out with me. We never see anything cause a 4 & 3 year old are too noisy but I love to see them enjoy the outdoors! Great pics. Definitely a memory maker!

I guess for those of us that never get drawn we might have a chance if we drive SR87....lol

My bad and saying bucks vs bulls. I didn't have one pic of a deer. The elk had definitely taken over this area. About a month ago I saw tons of deer sign with some elk sign but when I pulled these pics I only saw elk sign. Interested to see what happens as the weather cools down.

I dont mean to sound like im not happy with my bull, I feel blessed to be able to harvestthis great bull. I just feel like I have some un finished buisness withe giant bulls I was on the whole hunt if you know what I mean. It didnt come across like you were unhappy to me. It is always difficult to put an animal down when you know and have been chasing bigger ones in the area. Great bull and always wanting a bigger better animal is what drives us all. Great job and well deserved!

If you don't get drawn don't forget about the over the counter tags available. I didn't draw this year either but was still able to fill the freezer with an OTC tag. They are about $20 cheaper too. I think it ran me $114

Who's still looking to harvest their Bull in 22!
srfrost45 replied to ragingpointoutfitters's topic in Elk Hunting
Just checked a trail cam I have in 22 and there are some nice bulls that are surprisingly low(around 2000 feet). -

Thanks everyone! It had been really overcast and rained allot on Friday. Walking the creek bed didn't help keep the boots clean but made it easy to cut sign. I have a habit on getting scope bite but I will take it every time as long as what aim shooting at takes a dirt nap! Thanks again to everyone for their kind comments. Good luck with your hunts and hopefully I will be posting again with an OTC archery deer tag soon.

Didn't get drawn again for elk but was still able to fill the freezer with an over the counter limited opportunity hunt. Had a great time and still am building the bonus points!
