After reading over this thread for several days, I have decided on my new pack. I just ordered a gunslinger II in western slope. I will let you all know how it works out. It will see service in a couple of weeks in 36C, next will be a mulie hunt in the Beach Mountains early Dec. Several pick up hunts between then. Good Hunting

We are supposedly able to upload USGS 1:24,000 quadrangle maps to our GPS for free. Anyone have info on this?

+1 for me, and +1 for ruffcountry

I loaded aztopo from filedepot the other night too, and it looks very good in my Garmin, I will be using it in a couple of weeks in 36C, also downloaded Garmin Basecamp for free, it has replaced map source. If you go to USGS, you can download the quad maps in a raster format and upload on your Garmin. I am trying to work out the proceedure, but am not the most tech-savvy person, This would be useful for areas where free topo maps are not available.

Man, if I only lived closer to you... -
I was working on my uncle's property just south of Anchorage in September of 01. I was building roads on a mountain side with an old Catapillar D-8 so my uncle could subdivide and sell some lots. I had gotten the dozer stuck on a spruce stump half way up the mountain, and was walking down the mountain to get shovels and chainsaw(another story). As I came to a "T" intersection in the road I had just pushed in, I looked to my left and saw the rearend of a juvinile bull moose down the road. I could see horns sticking out on both sides of his rear end, but there were too many horns... Then I saw that there was another bull on the other side of him, they were sparring. My first thought was to get closer to see better. I walked quickly along the edge of the road trying to stay in the tree line, and got to a big dead spruce tree, and figured it was a good place to hide behind the tree. At this point the 2 bulls are about 30 yards away from me. This is when I noticed the bigger bull is on the other side of me. Sure enough, he started pushing the lesser bull backwards, right toward me. Even though they are not mature bulls, these guys are the size of clydsdales. When they are about 15 yards away, I looked at the dead spruce, and realized the branches were way too close to try to climb, all the while thinking "he won't push him this far"... about 10 seconds later, the 2 bulls were right next to the spruce tree that I was behind, I could have reached out and touched either one of them on the antlers. Then the bull getting pushed smelled me, he turned his head to look at me and snorted, now they were both looking right at me. At this point, I did the only thing I could do, I pulled my 454 from the holster and cocked the hammer very quickly, and leveled it at the bull that had the best shot of hooking me. They must have been more surprised than I was, they both trotted off about 40 yards and stopped and looked back. I ran back to the cabin and got a disposable camera and returned to get some glamour shots...

This is awesome guys, many thanks! -
I personally think alot of hunters are too impatient. First, do your homework. If there is fresh sign and the terrain is right, be confident. Don't give up too soon. Look for deer parts, not the whole deer. Legs, antlers, a swishy tail, and ears. I have spotted alot of deer because the twitched thier ear. Good hunting

I was always told to keep both eyes open. The benifit is that the crosshairs are super-imposed over your free eye if you do it right, but as stated, it does take practice. For me, it boils down to this, pistol and tactical rifle/shotgun=both eyes open. Long range, I usually close my free eye to help me focus. Stick with what you feel comfortable with. Good hunting

Amanda that was a really well written narrative of your hunt, and what a super buck!!! That was way better than what I read in my hunting mags, very well done.
